Shiner's and Scouts Share in Fun at the Speedway on Friday
by: Dennis Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 16) - Week number two rolled off without a hitch in the weather as the racing season moved on this past Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway. With all of the rain and inclement weather during the first four weeks, racers and fans would find a night where the temperatures were near perfect, and more moisture could have been used on the track. “It’s just a guess each week”, commented promoter Toby Kruse. “You just never seem to have it exactly perfect, but I guess that is what makes dirt track racing the heart and soul of our sport. It makes the drivers search the track to find their quick way’s around, and tonight they searched and found, because the track was smooth and when the rubber was laid down, it made for some good racing”.

One hundred and five race teams would fill the pits and a near capacity crowd will fill the grandstands with visitors coming from as far away as California and Alaska.

Friday night the area Scouts were honored and representatives from the Shiners’ were on hand to take part in the evening of racing activities. Many yellow flags would fill the night of racing, but everyone would agree, when the green flag was out, the racing was close and side-by-side. Two very distinct lines around the high-banked quarter mile raceway would make for some very interesting racing. A very high line and a very low line would test the skills in the feature events. Both were equally fast, which would make for numerous lead changes in all five-feature events. The key word that all drivers would use in their victory lane interview would be “patience” you had to drive with a soft gas pedal to keep yourself out of trouble.

Only one repeat feature winner would find his way back to victory lane this week as Kevin Sather would score back to back feature wins in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature.

Andy Hennigar would emerge the winner leading from the opening lap of the Dwarf Car feature. Hennigar would drop to the second position through the mid-way point but would quickly regain the top position and would go on to score the victory.

There would be plenty of three wide racing in the early going of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Dustin Smith would start in the seventh starting position and take the lead from Dusty Vis and Shawn Hoskins on lap six and never look back. Smith would hug the low side of the track and pull away from the rest of the field.

It would take until the forth try to get one green flag lap scored in the Meswaki Casino & Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified class. Scott Hogan would lead the opening lap then would hold off the field for the next nineteen circuits to score his first victory at the speedway in many years. For the second week in a row, Jimmy Gustin would put on the show on the high side of the track and finish in the second position, behind Hogan.

Chris Luloff would score his first ever win in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Good three wide racing for the top spot would end the night of close competition in all five divisions.

Next Friday night will be the Marshalltown Evening Optimist Kids Night at the Speedway with free admission for the kids, the trophies will be provided by Laser Engraving /Marshalltown Evening Optimist Club with a special Relay for Life design. 150 kids shirts will be given to the first 150 kids who come with an adult.

The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps beginning at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will fly at 7:30
