Friday night race fans came together to the aid of a Parkersburg family
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (June 6) - Friday night race fans came together to the aid of a Parkersburg family, Tom & Sue Teeple in there “Adopt a Family in need,” who lost everything in the tornado on Memorial Day weekend. “Everyone wants to do something, but what,” said speedway promoter Toby Kruse. “We wanted to give back, we were able to find Tom & Sue, and the racing family came through for them.” And to make matters worse, Sue has MS to go along with everything else. “You can’t even begin to imagine how thankful we are,” said Tom. “We have each other and that’s really all that matters. We are a proud town, with proud people, and Parkersburg will be back.” Tom & Sue were the guest at the speedway, and race fans took part in making there visit rewarding one. Money contributions were given through out the night, and one fan, who won the 50/50 money donated it all to Tom & Sue. “We always talk about the racing family, and it showed that when one of our family needs us, we all come together for each other, said Kruse.

The racing action would be close, exciting and three and four wide through the night, as drivers were competing on a near perfect racetrack. “Again this week, rain, rain and more rain would keep us on our toes, but again this week we showed the drivers and the fans that we are truly sincere about the Marshalltown Speedway being the best track in the country,” commented Kruse.

One hundred and seventeen race teams would make there way to the high-banked quarter mile raceway on Ron’s Towing & Service night number five. Again this week new faces would find there way to victory, and even a king would be crowned. Two drivers who hadn’t been to victory lane finally would have there luck changed on this near perfect night.

Todd Conrad last went to victory lane on August 20, 2006 in the Meskwaki Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified division and almost two years later he would find himself being in the right place at the right time. Sixteen-year-old driver Nick Deal who made the drive from near Omaha Nebraska would lead the first eighteen laps of the twenty-lap feature event. With two laps to go, Vern Jackson would make the pass for the lead with Jimmy Gustin also making the pass into second. Coming off of turn four the three lead cars would become entangled with each other bringing out the yellow flag and giving the lead to Conrad. Conrad would hold off Jerry Luloff the final two laps to break his winless streak and go to victory lane. Behind Conrad and Luloff were Tim Murty and Josh Gilman.

Trent Murphy appeared to be on his way to victory in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature until Damon Murty would make a low side pass on lap eight taking the lead and denying Murphy of the victory, who finished in the sixth position. Brian Irvine from Oelwein would try everything he could think of to get Murty out of the lead but Murty would go on and win his first feature since August 11th, 2006. “We’ve work hard, and we just had rotten luck, it feels good to finally get back to victory lane,” said Murty. Irvine, Dustin Smith and Jeff Wollam who started twenty-third would finish forth.

Mark McNeece would lead the opening lap of the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature, as a new record of twenty-nine competitors would sign in. Four heat races and a B-main event would be run to determine the twenty-four car-starting field. McNeece would give up the lead to point leader Luke Wanninger on lap three and would finish forth, his best finish of the season. With Wanninger in route to his third consecutive win, it looked like he would score the win hands down, until two laps to go when Kevin Sather had other ideas. The two would race each other side by side exchanging the lead before Wanninger would edge out Sather for the win. Paul Nagel would finish third with McNeece forth.

A wild roll over by Quinton Miller on lap two of the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature would bring out a lengthy red flag. The incident would happen in front of the capacity crowd, with Miller’s car rolling over and the debris flying off his car. Miller was uninjured and walked away from his badly destroyed racecar. Jamey Schirm would pass Jake Nelson when the green again would come out. Schirm would hold the top spot until there was two laps to go when Doug Smith, from Lake City would make the pass and go on for his first win at Marshalltown. Behind Smith and Schirm would be Alan VanGorp and Kenny Loftus.

Mike Morrill would continue his dominance in the Dwarf Car division by winning his third feature of the year. Morrill would lead the final four circuits and would finish ahead of Troy Hudson, Andy Hennigar and Duane Coffman.

Jerry Luloff would end the night by winning the Day’s Inn King of the Hill event, and giving him a starting position in the King of the Speedway event that will be run on the final regular season night in August. “This is my first ever win at Marshalltown. We have raced here off and on through the years, and now I can say I’ve have finally won.”

It will be a full week of racing next week starting with the speedway’s “Super Tuesday” and the Miller Lite 50 when the Deery Brothers I.M.C.A. Late Models come to town. Also racing on Tuesday night will be the Karl’s Chevrolet Dirt Truck who will be making their first appearance at the speedway along with the I.M.C.A. Sport Mods. The grandstand will open at 5:30 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing will begin at 7:30. Then next Friday night will be the annual “Faster Pastor” race with area clergy racing against each other in borrowed racecars of local drivers. Again, the gates will open at 5:30, and the races will begin at 7:30.
