What A Week At the Marshalltown Speedway
by: By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 4) - The much-anticipated week that race fans had been waiting for now has come and gone and the response from everyone seems to already be “we can’t wait until next year”. Monday and Tuesday the Marshalltown Speedway hosted the 13TH Annual American Stock Car Shoot-Out, which brought one hundred fifty-two race teams from seven states each night to compete on the high-banked quarter mile raceway. “The turn out of drivers and fans, the response we have been getting from out of state visitors about Marshalltown has just been overwhelming”, said third year promoter Toby Kruse. “We may have to change the name of the event to the “Marshalltown Nationals” just because this is just such a good fit for everyone”. After 60-different races and nearly 600-laps run through out the week the smiling Kruse couldn’t of been happier with the out come of the week. “I go back to what I said right from the start of us taking over the track, we are going to make this one of the best racing facilities in the country, and we are heading that direction right now. It’s up to our team of track workers to keep us going forward, and by golly it going like a dream come true.”

Over all winner’s of this years Shoot-Out were Brian Blessington from Breda Iowa in the Stock Car Class and Andy Boeckman would be the over all winner in the Hobby Stock Class. Boeckman who was the opening night winner would gain the title after race winner Shannon Anderson was disqualified giving the two-day point total to Boeckman.

In keeping with promoter Toby Kruse’s always wanting to offer something different, Kruse would come up with something no one ever heard of before. All heat race winners would receive a free pit pass to next week’s races. “This is our way of trying to help some of the expense the race teams have. This is my way of saying thank you to the drivers,” say’s Kruse. Then to end the night, Kruse would ask for Stock Car drivers to have a “Gambler” race, with winner taking all. Dustin Smith would edge out Rick Brown to win the first annual “Gambler’s” event.

Kevin Sather would have a busy week in victory lane by picking up a win on Monday night then would back that up with another victory on Friday night. Sather who is the point leader in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod division would take the lead just past the half way point by passing Luke Wanninger to score his seventh victory of the year, adding to his point lead. Fred Lethem would have his best finish of the year in third followed by Kyle Brown in forth.

Tracy Gienger would lead the first six laps of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature before Dave Atcher would take over the lead. Atcher who has been searching for another visit back to victory lane appeared to have things in hand until lap thirteen when Rick Brown put his Ford Thunderbird on the low side of the track. The two would race side by side until three laps from the end when Brown would take over the lead, and go on to score his second feature win of the year. Behind Brown would be Atcher, Dustin Smith and Steve Meyer.

Jimmy Gustin would once again put on the show of the night in the Meskwaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Gustin would experience engine trouble in the heat race, and the point leader appeared to be done for the night. If it had not been for fellow competitor Mike O’Lear, Gustin’s night would have been through. O’Lear loaned his car to Gustin. Gustin would start dead last in the twentieth position. With five laps to go, Gustin would work his way to the front, pass then leader Nick Deal and go on to score his second feature of the year. “I just can’t thank Mike and his crew for allowing me to drive his car,” said Jimmy. “The car worked great for me, I just can’t thank Mike enough,” concluded Gustin in victory lane.

Chris Luloff would score the victory in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock Class and would move himself back into the lead in the point chase. Doug Smith would finish second followed by Gene Nicklas and Gary Pfantz.

Troy Hudson would win his third feature of the season in the Dwarf Car feature. Duane Coffman finished second followed by Jeff Stensland and Andy Hennigar.

Next Friday night will be the Aarons Fair Night at the speedway. The night will also feature “kids bike races”. All youngsters are encouraged to bring their bikes, to compete on the high bank quarter mile raceway.
The grandstand will open at 5:30 followed by hot laps at 6:45 and the first race of the fair will begin at 7:30.
