Gambler Hugh Success on Friday Night!
by:Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 25) - Friday nights Hy-Vee night was like no other night ever at the Marshalltown Speedway. During the night a “King” was crowned and a “Gambler” would take home all of the money in one of the most unique nights ever at the speedway. It would be late Friday afternoon before the sun would come out from behind the clouds as the capacity crowd was making there way to the high banked quarter mile raceway. Before the night’s racing action would come to an end, Joey Schaefer would emerge as the winner of the Gambler event that would bag him over $2600 of prize money. “We just put this race together in the last eight days”, said promoter Toby Kruse. “We started with nothing and look at how we ended up. I just can’t thank the supporters of this race. We had individual sponsors, businesses and even drivers who put extra money into this race. Our sponsor tonight was Hy-Vee and they got it all going, and we just can’t thank them enough for that”.

The first start of the Gambler was called off after four wide racing into turn one would have two cars spinning to the inside. On the next restart Schaefer would stay on the low side of the track and just into the lead. Joey would run a flawless race hitting his mark in every corner. “This is hard to believe,” said Schaefer in victory lane. “I always love racing here, my work and racing schedule just doesn’t allow me to be here every Friday night, but I’m glad I was able to be here tonight. I’ve won a lot of races here in Marshalltown, but none like this one. I’ve never won this much money before, this is just great, a big thanks to Toby and everyone who made it possible.”

Even though the winner would take all, there were plenty of contingency prizes that went to the other drivers that were entered. “Because of everyone getting involved, we turned a race into an event, and again, that is what my goal has always been, to make this the best race track in the country,” concluded Kruse.
Nate Caruth would have things going his way in the Meskwaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature, as the fifteen-year-old driver from Ames was able to pick up the win. Kyle Krampe would lead the opening lap then Mike O’Lear would take his turn at the top spot before Caruth would take the lead on lap eight. O’Lear and Caruth would run door to door as they were pulling away from the rest of the field before Caruth was able to use lap traffic to his benefit in splitting the distance between first and second. A yellow would come out on lap seventeen bunching the field back together, but Caruth would pull away to a victory, his first win at the Marshalltown Speedway. Behind Caruth and O’Lear were Scott Hogan and Scott Simatovich finishing third and forth.

Luke Veren would score his third win of the year in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature also by using the lap cars to benefit him. Trent Murphy would lead the first three laps before Sean Johnson would take the top spot. Johnson would lead up to lap ten when Veren bolted to the front. Johnson would again take the lead on lap sixteen only to have Veren take it away on the next lap. Veren and Johnson would rub on the final lap with Veren taking the top spot by an eyelash over Johnson. Damon Murty finished third with Murphy coming home forth.

Doug Smith scored his third win of the season in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature by taking the lead from Dustin Filloon on lap three. Smith would be on cruise control the remaining nine laps on his way to the win. Chris Luloff, Jamie Schirm and Todd Reitzler would round out the top four.

Luke Wanninger made the pass on Fred Leytham just past the halfway point as Wanninger would pick up his fifth win of the season in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod division. Leytham who seems to get closer to his first feature win, finished in the second position followed by Neil Follett and Zach Rawlins.

Tim Hennigar would win the feature in the Dwarf Car event and Troy Hudson took the honors in the Day’s Inn King of the Hill event.

The last full month of the season will get underway next Friday night with the Hogeland Auto Plaza Kids Night. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps starting at 6:45 and the first race of the night will get underway at 7:30.
