FUN FILLED FRIDAY AT MARSHALLTOWN
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 1) - For the first time this racing season, the weather would turn out to be near perfect for the Hogeland Auto Plaza Kids night as week number twelve roared to life Friday night in front of a near capacity crowd. In attendance was ESPN NHRA sports broadcaster Dave Reif who stopped in to watch the races. “I have been so lucky working with ESPN and traveling around the country going to races, but to be here tonight is where the real action is. I just love to see the enthusiasm that Toby has got and how the fans support their drivers,” said Reif. “I have been following the Marshalltown Speedway and your accomplishments, everyone needs to know that this is becoming one of the best programs in the country, and I am here to tell you this place is awesome.”

Two new faces would find victory lane for the first time this season in the Meswaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature and in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod event. Dwarf Cars, Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock and Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Cars would all have former winners taking home the top honors.

The racing was awesome all night long with one of the most exciting races of the night coming out of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car class. The eighteen-lap feature event would again run green to checkered with side by side racing and the winner would not be determined until the final lap. Clay Deppe would lead the opening lap and would have to maneuver through lap traffic by lap five. At the half way point Rick Brown would stay close, and at time even take the lead, but Deppe wasn’t going to give up the top spot. Brown and Deppe would stay side by side for nearly four laps until Brown positioned himself to use a lap car to his benefit and was able to get by Deppe. With two laps remaining, Brown would hold off Deppe to score his third win of the season and his one hundred seventh of his I.M.C.A. career.

Fred Leytham would again this Friday night put himself in the position of running up front in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod class. During the past three weeks, Leytham would become stronger and more confident each week, and this week he would finally put it all together to score his first win of his career. Mark McNeece would lead the opening lap, but Leytham wasted no time in going to the front. As Leytham was pulling away a very sizable lead, the yellow would come out bunching the field behind the leader Leytham. On the restart Leytham would keep Joel Bushore behind him. With one lap to go, the yellow would come out for the final time. But since Marshalltown’s rules will not let an event finish yellow checkered, there would be one more restart for a green, white, checkered finish. Again, Leytham would not be rattled as he drove away and went on to score his first victory. Finishing second would be Bushore followed by Austin Kaplan and Fred Schimmels.

Brett Ladehoff who last one a feature during week seven of last season, would have his luck changed in the Meskwaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Brian Kunkel would lead the opening lap before Mike O’Lear would take over the lead. O’Lear would stay in front until lap five when Ladehoff made a high side pass to take the lead. Ladehoff would have the field covered for the next fifteen laps to pick up his first win of the season. Point leader Jimmy Gustin would finish second followed by Nick Deal and Vern Jackson.

Nick Murty scored his second win of the season in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby stock feature. Murty would start outside the front row and lead start to finish. Jamie Schirm, Dustin Elliott and Gene Nicklas would round out the top four behind Murty.

Point leader Mike Morrill would ad to his point total in the Dwarf Car feature by scoring his fifth feature win of the year. Andy Hennigar would finish second followed by Troy Hudson and Randy Bryan.

Next Friday night will feature the Day’s Inn King of the Hill race for the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Cars. The gates will open at 5:30. Hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will get underway at 7:30.
