Youth Movement Takes Over At Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 8) - For the second time in as many weeks, the capacity crowd was treated to a near perfect night of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway. One hundred and five race teams would make the trip to the high-banked quarter mile raceway to compete in one of the five divisions. Through out the night, race fans would watch close side-by-side racing and for the fifth time this season a “king” would be crowned to end the night. Racers and fans from Missouri, New Hampshire, Florida, Wisconsin and Iowa were in attendance Friday night enjoying in the racing action.

During the course of week thirteen, it was evident that the youth movement was in true form as two new drivers would win their first races of there young career. Fifteen-year-old Dalton Dingman would win his first race ever in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod heat race as he easily outdistanced the competition in heat race number three. Sixteen-year-old Johnny Mordock from Creston who had been racing since he was eight years old was able to hold off four other drivers by winning his Dwarf Car feature. Two young drivers both able to ad the Marshalltown Speedway to their career records as scoring their first wins.

Mordock would take the lead from opening lap leader Jason Hall on lap two, hold off the field to score his first win. “This is what my dad I have been waiting for the past eight years, it has finally happened and we are just so happy”, said the young gun in victory lane. Finishing second would be Andy Hennigar followed by Joel Huggins and point leader Mike Morrill.

Dingman would start outside the front row in the Sport Mod feature but by the end it would be the experience of Luke Wanninger who would take the win. Last weeks feature winner Fred Leytham would lead the opening lap and lead the first twelve laps before Wanninger would make a low side pass on the final lap to score his sixth win of the year. Leytham and Wanninger would race each other side by side, but Wanninger would not be denied the win. Leytham would finish second followed by point leader Kevin Sather in third with Joel Bushore finishing forth. Dingman would finish sixth, in his best finish of the season.

Brad Bartling would lead the first half of the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature but the last six laps were led by point leader Chris Luloff, as the Independence driver would go on to score his forth feature win of the year. Jennifer Hulin who seems to be getting closer each week to her first feature win would finish second followed by Gene Nicklas and Bartling.

Eric Flander jumped out into the lead in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Dusty Vis would put the pressure on Flander in the early going as point leader Dustin Smith was working his way to the front. By lap twelve the trio would be three wide before Smith would jump into the lead on lap fourteen. Smith would then hold on to score his second feature of the year and his first since week two of the season. Flander would have his best season finish coming home in second. Vis would end up third followed by Luke Veren in forth.

The final feature of the evening would see the lead change hands many times in the Meswaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified event. David Brown would lead the opening lap, then Nick Deal took his turn at the top spot before Mike O’Lear would work his way to the front on lap twelve. O’Lear one night earlier would crash his car at Britt Iowa, work on the car all day long, then go out and win his second feature of the year. “It wasn’t me that did the work on the car, it was the crew. It was on the frame machine all day today, we didn’t know what to expect, and I guess they got it right, because we are here in victory lane,” said O’Lear in the victory lane interview. Deal would finish second followed by point lead Jimmy Gustin and Vern Jackson.

Dustin Smith would end the night by winning the Day’s Inn King of the Hill event, qualifying him for the year ending King of the Speedway race on Friday night August 29th.

Racing resumes next Friday night with the New Hope Cardboard Classic. Horse power will be replaced by foot power as the youngsters will be building cardboard race cars for there heroes to compete in. The grandstand will open at 5:30 with hot laps starting at 6:45 and the first race of the night will begin at 6:30.
