Shryock Tops Season Opening O'Reilly USMTS Win at the Pepsi
Scotland County Speedway
by Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, MO (April 21) - Mother nature hasn't been to kind so far this season
for the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, as four attempts have been made to get
the season started. But what a beautiful night for racing on Saturday, as Kelly
Shryock (O'Reilly USMTS), Zack VanderBeek (USRA Stock Cars), Wyatt Lantz (USRA
B-Modfieds), Steve Allen (USRA Hobby Stocks), Jeff Soper (Outlaw Hobby Stocks)
and Michael Grossman (Hornets) took home season opening wins.
The first feature of the night was the 15 lap USRA B-Modified, with Ron York and
defending track champion Tony Dunker drawing the front row. Dunker took
advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1, but transmission
troubles on lap 3 ended his hopes for a win. York inherited the lead after
Dunker pulled out and then held on until lap 4, when Wyatt Lantz, who started
sixth, slipped by for the top spot. Lantz held on for the final 11 laps to claim
the win. Jack Evans Jr came from seventh to finish in second, York held on for
third, Joe Hooper came from tenth to finish in fourth, with Jim Gillenwater
rounding out the top five. Dunker and Lantz each took home a heat race win.
Up next was the 15 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Shawn Smothers and Steve
Allen leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place
starter Todd Reitzler grabbing the lead on lap 1. Reitzler would hold the top
spot until lap 3, when Aleen slipped by to take over the lead. Allen would go on
to lead the final 12 laps to pick up the win. Mike Shelton came from eighth to
finish in second, Reitzler came home in third, Tim Kraber finished in fourth,
while Chad Koch came from eleventh to round out the top five. Heat race winners
were Allen and Kraber.
Brian Lemen and Ethan Hustead lead the field to the drop of the green flag in
the 8 lap Hornet feature, but it was Michael Grossman who started fourth
grabbing the top spot on lap 1. Grossman held off Andrew Hustead on the final
lap to claim the win. Luke Davidson would finish in third, Ethan Hustead held on
for fourth, with Lemen coming home in fifth. Grossman would make a sweep of the
night, by claiming the win in the heat race.
The 10 lap USRA Stock Car feature was next, with Zack VanderBeek and Troy
Alexander leading the field to the green. VanderBeek grabbed the lead on the
start and never looked back, as he pulled away to lead all 10 laps. Alexander
edged out Matt Greiner by inches for second, Mark Holt was fourth, with Michael
Browning rounding out the top five. Greiner would pick up the heat race win.
Brian Howerton and defending track champion Beau Taylor drew the front row for
the 15 lap Outlaw Hobby Stock feature, but it was third place starter Keith Reed
edging out Howerton by inches to lead lap 1. Reed would hold the top spot until
lap 3, when Jim Lynch slipped under him to grab the lead. The field was slowed
on lap 6 by a red flag when Josh Soper rolled in turn two. On the restart, Jeff
Soper would jump to the outside of Lynch to take over the lead. Soper then held
off several attempts by Lynch over the final 8 laps to claim the win. Rodger
Dresden would finish in third, fourth went to Brandon Symmonds, with Howerton
holding on for a fifth place finish. Lynch and Josh Soper each picked up a heat
race win.
The final feature of the night was the 35 lap O'Reilly USMTS, with Tommy Myer
and Richie Gustin Jr. drawing the front row for the event. Myer would take
advantage of his front row starting spot to edge out Gustin Jr. for the lead on
lap 1. Myer then held the top spot until lap 4, when Kelly Shryock jumped to his
outside to take over the lead. Shryock then survived six restarts during the
event to hold on for his fifth consecutive O'Reilly USMTS win in a row for 2007.
Mark Burgtorf came home in second, Al Hejna was third, fourth went to Zack
VanderBeek after starting thirteenth, with Brad Pinkerton charging from
twenty-third to round out the top five. Heat race wins went to Burgtorf, Hejna,
Tony Fraise and Michael Long, while VanderBeek and Ryan Gustin took home the
semi wins.
Coming up next week at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway will be the first
appearance of 2007 for the USRA Late Models. The Late Models will be going for a
$3,000 top prize and $250 to start the feature. Also running will be the first
points race for USRA Modifieds, with the USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Modifieds, USRA
Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobby Stocks and Hornets continuing to battle for USRA
Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national and track points. Gates
will open at 4 pm, hot laps at 6 and racing getting underway at 6:30.
