SEVEN WINNERS IN NINE FEATURES AT PEPSI SCOTLAND COUNTY
SPEEDWAY
Story and Photos By Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, Mo. (June 30) — The Pepsi Scotland County
Speedway fans were treated to three extra features on Saturday, June 30th, as
the rained out features from the Fair Night opened the nights racing action.
Taken home feature wins were Michael Long (Both USRA Modifieds), Matt Greiner
(USRA Stock Cars), Wyatt Lantz (Both USRA B-Modifieds), Jason McDaniel (Make-Up
USRA Hobby Stocks), Bill Gibson (Regular USRA Hobby Stocks), Brandon Symmonds
(Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Brooke Hassler (Hornets).
Starting the night off was the rained out 15-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with
Jason McDaniel taking advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap
1. McDaniel would pull away to lead all 15 laps to pick up second win of the
season at Memphis. Derek Kirkland came home second, Mike Shelton was third, Tim
Kraber fourth, with Bill Gibson rounding out the top five.
Up next was the 20-lap USRA Modified make-up feature. Dennis Elliott jumped out
front on the drop of the green flag from his front row starting spot and had
built a straight away lead, until a caution came out on lap 15. Michael Long,
who had started 8th, had worked his way to second by the time the caution came
out. On the restart, Elliott, jumped to the top of the speedway, and Long, went
low, ran side-by-side the final five laps. Long would edge out Elliott at the
line by inches to take his third win in a row. Ryan Meyer was third, Jody Wood
was fourth, with Martin Bennett coming home in fifth.
The final make-up feature was the 15-lap USRA B-Modifieds, with Wyatt Lantz
taking the lead from his front row start. Lantz would hold the top spot until
lap 4, when Gillenwater, who started 8th, slipped under him for the lead. A
restart on lap 6 gave Lantz the shot he needed to get back by Gillenwater for
the top spot. Lantz then held off Gillenwater over the final 6 laps, as the
feature was cut short for to many cautions, to claim his second win of the
season at Memphis. Ron York was third, Gary Wilson came from fourteenth to
finish in fourth, with Adam Birck rounding out the top five.
Now it was time to start the regular nights feature, with the 15-lap USRA Stock
Cars up first. Michael Browning took advantage of his front row start to jump
out into the lead on the drop of the green flag. Browning would hold the top
spot until lap 7, when Greiner went to his outside to take over the lead.
Greiner then held off Browning over the final 8 laps to claim his fourth win of
the season at the speedway. Larry Krog was third, Kyle Chinn was fourth, with
Troy Alexander coming home in fifth. Heat race winners were Greiner and Krog.
Brandon Symmonds moved out front on lap 1 of the 15-lap Outlaw Hobby feature
from his front row starting spot, with Josh Soper and Rodger Dresden close
behind. Symmonds would hold all challenges from Soper and Dresden to lead all 15
laps and pick up his third win of the season at Memphis. Josh Soper edged out
Dresden for second, Jim Lynch was fourth, with Jeff Soper rounding out the top
five. Jeff Soper and Dresden picked up the heat race wins.
Up next was the 10 lap Hornet feature, with Brooke Hassler coming from fourth to
grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. Hassler then held off Galen Hassler
over the final laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Andrew
Hustead was third, Lowell Smith was fourth, with Luke Davidson coming home in
fifth. Brooke made a sweep of the night by taking home the heat win.
The 15-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature saw Derek Kirkland take the lead from his
front row starting spot on lap 1. Kirkland would hold the top spot until lap 5,
when Mike Shelton moved by for the lead, only for the caution to come out and
giving the lead back to Kirkland. On the restart, Bill Gibson, who started 6th,
jumped to the outside to take over the lead. Gibson then led the final 10 laps
to pick up his fourth win of the season at Memphis. Shelton came home second,
Jason McDaniel came from eighth to finish in third, Bob Lynch was fourth, with
Steve Allen rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Gibson and
McDaniel.
Ron York jumped out front on lap 1 of the 18-lap USRA B-Mod feature, with Jim
Gillenwater close behind in second. York then held the top spot until lap 3,
when Gillenwater slipped under for the lead. A restart on lap 8 saw Wyatt Lantz,
who started 12th, get by Gillenwater for the lead. Lantz then held on for the
final 10 laps to pick up his second win on the night. Adam Birck had a career
best third, Gary Wilson charged from fifteenth to finish in fourth, with York
holding on for fifth. Josh Larson, Gillenwater and Lantz took home heat race
wins.
The final and best feature of the night was the 20-lapper for the USRA
Modifieds. Mark Burgtorf took advantage of his front row start to grab the lead
on the drop of the green flag. Burgtorf then held the top spot until lap 5, when
Mark VanWinkle, who started eighth, slipped under him for the lead. But Burgtorf
would come back on the top to get the lead back on lap 6. VanWinkle wouldn't
give up, as he took the lead once again on lap 8, only to lose it back to
Burgtorf on lap 10. But VanWinkle would take the lead back from Burgtorf on lap
11 and then held it until lap 13 when Michael Long, who started 10th, slipped by
for the lead. Long then held off all challenges over the final seven laps to
pick up his second win of the night and fourth in a row at Memphis. Burgtorf got
by VanWinkle to take second, Vance Wilson came from 11th to finish in fourth,
with Tony Fraise rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Martin
Bennett, Ryan Meyer and Burgtorf.
