Hanestad Tops Dart Challenge Series race
By Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLERY, MN (July 5) - With rainouts all over WISSOTA Country the first three months being the norm the fans and drivers flocked to Deer Creek Speedway as a huge contingent of drivers and fans were on hand for the annual 800-Radiator Dart Challenge Series races for the WISSOTA Late Models. The record breaking crowd for this event was entertained all night long with exciting racing action in a five classes in action on the night.

The racing action got underway at 3:00 in the afternoon with the Pepsi slingshots racing on the Button Buck Speedway. In the Junior division Lucas Schott jumped out to the early lead with Jace Bunne in second and Brady Keefe third as the race began. Parker Hale cleared Keefe and Bunne early on with Dustin Sorensen following him through into third. Schott continued to lead up front during a midway caution while Sorensen pressured Hale hard for the next five laps. The determination paid off as Sorensen and Hale raced side by side for the final three laps. Sorensen took the second spot when he completed the pass coming out of four to the checkers. Up front through it was Schott cruising home with the win.

Lexi Schott took the early lead in the Pee-Wee division with Dustin Sorensen putting the pressure on her quickly on lap two. Sorensen took the lead on lap three and slowly pulled away for another feature win. Schott came home second with Matthew Schlisman in third.

The best race of the afternoon was the Regular division with Parker Hale taking the early lead. Lucas Schott sat in second early on and was looking to make an inside pass on Hale. Schott got the drive almost every lap out of four to pull alongside but Hale had the preferred line going into one. The two continued to dice it up front with Jace Bunne in third. With four to go Schott kept alongside in one and two as the two races die by side for two laps until Schott took control up front and took home the win with Hale in second and Bunne third.

With the afternoon session completed the racing action started on the 3/8 mile High banked speedway with Bryan Hernandez taking the early lead in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Mike Hernke dove down low and moved into the lead as they exited turn four on lap one. Joel Alberts was in third while Brandon Davis and Jimmie Arnold raced for fourth early. With the rest of the field running two wide Davis took control of fourth. Albert Wytaske followed him through to fifth until a caution flew with eleven to go. On the restart Hernke continued to lead while Davis, Wytaske, Alberts and AJ Wiste raced four wide for third. Hernke slowly pulled away from the file dup front while Hernandez and Albets continued to run in second and third. Bobby Swanson and Jerry Young raced in fourth and fifth with the laps winding down. Herneke took the win by a half straight in his first feature win in the division at the speedway.

The Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks had one of the best races of the night again up front. Week in and week out they provide great side by side racing action. Troy Voth took the early lead with Danny Hanson lcose behind in second. Tim Siskow, Fred Prudoehl and AJ Zvorak raced three wide for third with fifteen to go. Voth held a small half car length lead as they raced around the speedway with Zvorak taking control of third. Voth and Hanson still raced for the lead with Voth continuing to hold the slight edge every lap. With eight to go Ryan Goergen took over the fourth spot with Karl Hewitt Jr., following him into fifth. With four to go Hanson finally held the lead at the stripe and slowly moved out to a half car length lead as the checkers flew. Hanson and Voth raced each other clean and hard for the whole race with no contact between the two in the tight close race.

Unknown to the drivers of the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock division Lyle Danielson of Peterson Motors put up an extra $100 to the winner of the feature event, making tonights WISSOTA Super Stock race worth $600 to the lucky driver who crossed the line first. Wyatt Wolfe Jr. jumped out to the early lead with Jeff Brauer in tow. With two laps down Bruaer took the lead on the low side of the speedway. Brian Fetting and Dustin Nelson raced for third early with Cole Queensland up to fifth. Nelson took the spot with Queensland following him into fourth. With fourteen to go Queensland moved past Nelson and raced Fetting for the second spot. Six laps later Queensland finally moved past Fetting as Getting started to slow. A caution for the Fetting machine with eight laps to go was not what Brauer wanted as he was cruising away up front. On the restart Brauer continued to run the high line around the speedway while Queensland tucked it up tight along the inside. The two raced side by side for the next four laps until Queensland took over the lead and took home the win by just over a half car length. Brauer had a great run looking good in second just coming up short. Nelson held on for third with Chris Groth and Ryan Siegle racing into the top five.

The WISSOTA Dart Challenge Series 40 lap feature was up next for their $3,000 to win event. Also a $300 hard charger award was put up by a local fan Greg Hummel to the driver advancing the most spots in the feature event. Pete Parker and Lance Matthees paced the field with Parker leading the first lap as the rest of the field raced two and three wide for the first couple circuits. With five down Matthees started to pressure Parker for the lead as the only caution of the event flew. Parker led on the restart with Cory Mahder taking second away from Matthees. Behind them Keith Foss and Pat Doar were side by side for fifth with Doar taking the spot with twenty eight to go. Rick Hanestad moved past Matthees for third and quickly worked past Mahder for second. With twenty four to go Hanestad started to work the track and started to gain ground on the leader. Matthees go back around Mahder for third while Doar followed Matthees and took over fourth on the next lap. With eighteen to go Hanestad caught the leader and they raced side by side around the speedway for a lap before Hanestad took control of the event. Behind them Doar worked past Matthees for third Doar and Matthees eventually caught up to Parker and worked past him for second and third. Hanestad cruised home over the last ten laps to take home the win with Doar taking home second and the hard charger award for gaining thirteen spots.

When Tim Donlinger starts on the front row for the EZ Fabricating USRA feature you know the rest fo the field is typically in trouble. It was no different tonight as Donlinger led lap one. Jeff Schluetter was in second early and Ryan York in third. Tommy Myer and Brad Waits were in fourth and fifth early but quickly they worked through the field. With twenty to go a caution waved. On the restart Waits took over second with Myer in third. Todd Scharkey, Nate Wasmund and York were three wide for fourth. Eighteen to go and Myer moved under waits to take over second. Another car working through the field was Bob Timm who at the half way point was just outside the top five. Donlinger continued strong up front while Myer and Waits were racing hard for second. Myer held onto second as Donlinger took home the win. Waits held off the hard charging Timm for third with Jason Cummins getting past Wasmund late for fifth.
