Friday Night at Chateau Raceway
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (July 25) - It was the final race of July Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation, that leaves just four points races left on the 2008 schedule before the fall specials get underway. Points races in all classes will take center stage as those final four weeks of Amsoil Dirt Track Racing Action get underway next Friday Night. Entering this weekend all seven classes are saw very tight races heading down the stretch. In the Pizza Ranch Pure Stock class six drivers were with in fifty points of each other entering the night with the top three separated by just twelve markers, with Tyler Peterson of Hollandale up two on Brandon Skalicky of Claremont. Ross Spitzer of Dodge Center sat in third entering the night. Just fourteen points separated the top three in Triple J Disposal WISSOTA Super Stocks entering the night, as Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow led Chris Klinger of Austin by twelve with Jeff Brauer of Rochester another two back. Likewise the top three Affordable Portables WISSOTA Street Stocks started the night with four drivers within twenty-one points of each other. Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa led Matt Eustice of Hartland by eight entering the night with AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie thirteen back and Jesse Stahl of Austin sitting in fourth. Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds at the beginning of the night had three drivers at the top separated by only fifteen points with Albert Wytaske of Lansing leading brother Kenny, also of Lansing, by three points and Brandon Davis of Medford sat third. In the two S and S Auto Salvage Hornet points races Trae Diaz of Austin, who picked up his first career feature win a week ago led Michael Wytaske of Lansing by four points in the Junior Division and Gary Stahl of Kasson went into the night up twenty markers on Randy Rauen of Austin in the Senior Class. In Frenchs Repair and Fabrication USRA Modifieds Mike Sorensen of Rochester started the nights program up thirty-one points on Brad Bakken of Garner Iowa and eight-three up on Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie. So with the points races that tight entering the night the expectations were some very exciting close hard racing and the drivers did not disapoint as the points races continue to go back and forth.

One change did occur at the top of one the classes point chases. In S and S Auto Salvage Hornet action Rauen took over the top spot by default as Stahl, who was leading the points did not show up for the nights program and thus Randy was able to use a pair a second place finishein his heat and a third in his feature to take over the points lead by a considerable margin. The one person he couldn't overtake on the night was Mike Blowers of Waseca who scored his fourth straight feature win in the class. Blowers started on the pole and lead flag to flag to win his heat and after starting in row three in his feature he took just four laps to get to the front to score that win. In the Junior Hornet Division of drivers sixteen and under Garrit Wytaske of Lanisng picked up his first career feature win as he made a last lap pass on Matt Brooks of Austin. Coming out of turn four to the checkers Wytaske scooted to the inside of Brooks to take home the win. Wytaske also had a sweep on the night as he was awarded the heat win earlier in the night when he was sent sailing off of turn two on the final lap. The caution-checker finish went back to the white flag order where he was the leader. In the points race meanwhile Diaz padded his lead over Michael Wytaske increasing it to seven points by the end of the night. A wild moment just past halfway in the feature occurred when Brianna Grinstead of Austin, who will be a high school senior this fall, got her car high off of turn two and rolled it off the end of the track. The car landed on it wheels and she climbed out quickly, later saying her neck was a little sore from the accident. It the second year in a row she has had the opportunity to see the world upside down as she rolled in the season finale last year.

Things tightened up considerably in the Affordable Portables WISSOTA Street Stock Class where A.J. Zvorak moved into second place behind Ryan Goergen just five points back. A.J. won a thrilling duel with Bobby Kilby of Austin to win his third feature win of the season as well as scoring a sweep after winning his heat earlier in the night. Zvorak started row four and thanks to a first lap cautiion moved up to row three for a restart. On that start he jumped straight to second behind pole sitter Mike Kohn of Hollandale. As the cars spread out three wide Kilby jumped from fifth to first on lap two and A.J.. was schuffled back to third. Zvorak came right back a lap later and went to the outside of the field and nosed to the lead out of turn two only to get schuffled back again by the time they came around to complete the next lap. Zvorak set his sights back on coming towards the front and was back in second two laps later. A few later cautions slowed the pace of the race and eventually set up a two lap dash to the finish. As Kilby brought the field to the green and took the lead down towards turn one A.J. shot high into turn one and than sling shot to the bottom of two and swept past Bobby to take the lead. Zvorak lead the final two laps to score an impressive win. The classes other heat win went to Goergen. Despite falling to third in points Eustice did pick up one point on Ryan to sit just seven points out with the four points shows remaining.

Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had a frustrating night as yellow fever struck. At one point four straight cautions fell without the field completing a lap. Eventually Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie scored his second feature win of the season at Lansing. Bryan started outside of row two in the feature and swept to the lead quickly. He spent most of the race keeping current point leader Albert Wytaske behind him. Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin had a nice run as he worked from row five all the way up to a third place finish. Heat wins in the class went to Albert, Greg, and Kenny Wytaske. Albert's night allowed him to pad his lead over brother Kenny to six points.

Cole Queensland added to his points lead as he is now up sixteen but its Brauer who is now in second with Klinger falling to third now seventeen points back. Despite his gains in the points races on the track he was second best on the night as Curt Myers of Cameron Wisconsin rolled in for a visit on the night and took care of business with a pair of thrilling late race wins. In his heat he patiently worked on Brauer eventually passing him for the lead with just one lap to go. In the main event he had a back and forth race working forward and falling back before eventually getting to the front with just two laps remaining. Jason Gabrielson of Austin started on the outside of row two and after trailing Josh Bartel of Kasson on lap one took the lead on lap two. Myers came out of a three wide battle on lap four to take the lead for a lap but a lap later was schuffled back to fourth as Queensland went to the point. A couple short laps later Curt was back up to second and spent several laps reeling in the Queensland. The two had several side by side laps between laps thirteen and sixteen before Curt went to the point and scored a feature win at the track in his first visit. Cole did pick up a heat win on the night however.

In Frenchs Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified action Brad Bakken, who has been very consistent all year, drove one of the finest races of the year to pick up first feature win of the year. Bakken started inside row two and moved to the front immediately. Mike Sorensen, coming out of row three worked to second on lap three and the race was on. Mike pulled up on Brad and the two were side by side just before the midpoint of the race. Bakken shook him off and opened up a couple car length lead only to have the two come up on the tail end of the field and as they worked lap traffic Sorensen took a few more looks at getting along side Brad for the lead. Brad met every challenge and as the race went caution free from green to checkers he posted a very impressive win with a great display of driving. The heat winners on the night were Todd Scharkey of Kasson and Jacob Dahle of Morristown. Bakkens win moved him to within twenty-six markers of Sorensen.

Ross Spitzer made his bid to show he's ready to move up in the Pizza Ranch Pure Stock point standings. Spitzer and current point leader Brandon Skalicky ran two side by side laps up front to starte the feature before Ross took control. Skalicky settled into second and despite several late restats had nothing for Ross as he finished second behind him. Tyler Peterson came home third and was able to maintain his two point edge on Skalciky after he picked up one of the heat wins, however Spitzer took two points off his deficit now sitting in third ten points back. The classes other heat win went to Jason Newkirk of Austin.

The race for the Championships as well as the weekly wins continues next Friday Night at Lansing with racing action getting underway at 7:30. Next weeks kids promotion is listed as a Frisbee Night after kids were treated to car rides this week before the racing program began.
