Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (August 8) - It was night twelve of racing action Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation, as a nice field of cars put on some exciting AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action. Every feature on the night had action from front to back with plenty of two and three wide action and every feature had a battle for the lead right up to the end with none of the winners able to run away and leave the field behind. The "Affordable Portables" WISSOTA Street Stock feature had the top two drivers bumper to bumper to the finish. Dave Stevens of Albert Lea was able to jump from the inside of row two to the front in the first lap with Dan Holland of Brownsdale, also starting in row two moving up to second Behind them the next four drivers swapped positions lap after lap moving ahead and falling back. Eventually A.J. Zvorak of Blooming Prairie worked his way up to third and made it a three way battle for the win. The only caution of the race came just before mid-race and and while Holland was having no luck in getting past Stevens for the lead he was able to use that restart to his advantage. Off the drop of the green he pulled right alongside Dave and worked his way to the point. Stevens fell in line and pressured him the rest of the race while at the same time trying to hold off Zvorak. The three put on a good show right up to the checkers as Holland picked up his first feature win of the season. Stevens held off Zvorak for second with Matt Eustice of Hartland coming home fourth ahead of Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa. Heat winners in the class on the night were Eustice and Jesse Stahl of Austin. With his third place finish Zvorak was able to take over the points lead over Goergen by one point with just two nights of point racing left before Track Champions are decided.

Another tight points battle that is going to go down to the wire is in the "Pizza Ranch" Pure Stock class where Brandon Skalicky of Claremont and Tyler Peterson of Hollandale came in to the night tied for the top spot. After Peterson took third in his heat, which Skalicky won, Brandon lead the points by two. In the feature however things were ugly early for Skalicky. He was involved in a first lap incident where he was tabbed for causing the yellow putting him to the back instead of restarting in row three. It got worse as he was involved in a lap two caution that sent him to the pits to have his car checked, he made it back out in time for the restart only to have another incident happen in front of him that he got a piece of. Again he went to the pits to get checked and again he was back out for the restart still setting at the tail end of the line. Peterson meanwhile had made a big move on the initial start and had jumped to the front only to get passed by Billy Steinberg of Kasson on lap two. Still he was running towards the front and Skalicky was in the back and it was looking like the points swing could be big as there was a question as to how bad Brandons car was damaged. It became clear over the last twelve laps, which ran caution free, that it wasn't that bad. Skalicky came back up through the field all the way back up fourth. Peterson held on for second behind Steinberg and just ahead of Ross Spitzer of Dodge Center. The two point swing went the other way this time and the two sit tied again atop the standings going to next week. For Steinberg it was his second feature win of the season. The classes other heat win went to Wayne Bellrichard of Albert Lea who saw victory lane for the first time this season.

The "Power 96" WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature event saw a driver lead from flag to flag for the win but it was anything but an easy drive. A.J. Wiste of Adams lined up outside front row for the feature and was able to lead the twenty-one car field around to lead lap one. He held off several different drivers over the course of the race. Troy Dahle of Morristown dogged him early before he spun while running third on lap six. Dustin Steinbrink of Austin who moved up to second pulled up on him and made him feel his heat, followed by Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie, who than moved up to second and put the pressure on him for several laps. Just past the mid-point of the race Albert Wytaske of Lansing took over second and took his shot at trying to move Wiste off the lead but it wasn't going to happen as A.J. chalked up his first feature win of the year at Lansing. Wiste also scored a heat win on the night giving him a sweep for the evening. The other two heat wins went to Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin and Kenny Wytaske of Lansing who trails Albert by just eight points in another very tight points battle.

A small field of eight cars competed in the "Triple J Disposal" WISSOTA Super Stock class. Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow took his track leading seventh feature win of the season. Cole started in the back and slowly worked his way toward the front. Josh Bartel of Kasson took the early lead before giving it up to Jeff Brauer of Rochester. Brauer stretched out a pretty good lead as the race ran caution free. Queensland slowly cut into his lead and the two ran side by side for a lap about mid-race before Cole took over the lead and held off Brauer for the win. Chris Klinger of Austin took home the classes heat win.

There was plenty of excitement in the "French's Repair and Fabrication" USRA Modified main event. Mike Sorensen of Rochester jumped out of row two on the drop of the green and pulled to the inside of front row starters Greg Jensen of Albert Lea and Todd Scharkey of Kasson. The three wide race sorted out down the back straightaway with Mike taking the early lead. Behind him drivers were swapping spots lap after lap with Scharkey coming to second than falling back to fourth, only to race back up to second again. Brad Baken of Garner Iowa would bounce back and forth in the top five as well as others. With twelve laps to go Brad had moved back past Todd for second. A lap later a caution put the two side by side behind Sorensen who had been trying to stretch out a lead. The two ran side by side a few laps before Scharkey got control of the spot again. The race ran green for several laps and the leaders started lapping the back of the field. With Scharkey pulling away from Bakken and reeeling in Sorensen it was setting up another great finish. Both drivers were running the bottom half of the track and with Todd trying to make his move inside Mike kept his car down low and despite a late caution Sorensen was up to the task and collected his second feature win of the year at Chateau. Tom Paulson of Kasson and Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie took the classes two heat wins. Noble had a good run going in the feature and was up in the top five battling when he pitted on that late caution with two laps to go.

The "S and S Auto Salvage" Hornet classes saw a pair of drivers bring out the brooms and complete sweeps with wins in both there heats and features. In the Junior Division Garrit Wytaske of Lansing inherited the lead of his feature when some tough luck struck Brandon Vogt of Rose Creek. Vogt had taken advantage of starting on the pole to take the early lead. About two laps in however a small fire developed under the rear of the car and officials through the caution and pulled him into the infield to put out the fire. That ended his night and Wytaske, who had won a flag to flag victory in his heat, was the benefactor as he raced to his second Junior Hornet feature win of the year. In the Senior Division Gary Stahl of Kasson held off Mike Blowers of Waseca for his fifth feature win of the season. Jason McShane of Waseca lead the field of the drop of the green but Stahl wasted little time in getting to the front. When he got there he brought Blowers with him up through the field and he to drive a perfect race to keep him behind him.

Racing action continues next Friday night with the "Box Car" Races for the kids. Kids are encouraged to take a box this next week and design it to look like a stock car. Take the top and bottom out of the box and put some straps in in so it can hang over there shoulders and than get ready to race next Friday Night during the nights racing program. Racing action is scheduled to hit the track next Friday night at 7:30 with another night of exciting racing action.
