It wasn't a matter of "if" for Justin Sass, but a matter of "when."

SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 9) - The "when" turned out to be Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway, as the Alma, Wis., Late Model driver held off a talented field of drivers to capture his first career feature win in a Late Model.

The feature victory came just hours after Sass took his first checkered flag in a Late Model, too, winning his heat race.

Sass, in his second season in a Late Model, led the final 15 laps of the 25-lap feature, fending off track points leader Nick Herrick and
Keith Foss.

"This is awesome," he said. "It's what we've been waiting for since we moved up to a Late Model last year. It's great; it's about time."

Sass started on the outside of Row 2 and it took him 10 laps to get by Nick Kramer for the lead. Sass went underneath Kramer in between Turns 3 and 4 on the 10th lap of the feature, then rode the high side of the track to his first win of the season. Herrick finished second, followed by Foss, Mike Prochnow and Joe Ludemann.

STREET STOCKS

A recent wreck became a blessing in disguise for Zumbrota's Troy Voth.

"I owe a little thanks to a crash I had out here," Voth said. "We
found something in the car after that and it worked tonight."

Voth passed Karl Hewitt Jr. on the high side of the track with seven
laps to go in the 18-lap Street Stock feature and won a battle down
the stretch with Danny Hanson and AJ Zvorak.

Voth, who sits sixth in the season points standings, beat the top
three points leaders. Zvorak entered Saturday's races with a slim
four-point lead over Ryan Goergen and a six-point lead over Hanson.

"These guys I race against are a great bunch of guys," Voth said.
"Danny was on the inside of me, but he always races me clean."

Hanson finished second, Zvorak third, Goergen fourth and Chuck Nerland
placed fifth.

USRA MODIFIEDS

Jason Cummins continues to prove he belongs in the same category as
top area drivers Tim Donlinger and Brad Waits this season. Donlinger
has led the Deer Creek points race all season, until Waits took over
the lead after Saturday's races, and Waits has won three features at
Deer Creek.

Like Donlinger and Waits, Cummins is now a multiple-feature winner at
Deer Creek this summer. He drove his Skyrocket into Victory Lane for
the second time this season on Saturday night. Cummins, Waits and
Donlinger are the only drivers to win at Deer Creek this year.

"It feels better than I can describe," Cummins told the crowd. "It's
like the car says, it's a Skyrocket. We've had a few mishaps, but we
can't complain. The hard work and dedication we've put into it, it's
all worth it."

OTHER WINNERS

Albert Wytaske took the lead in the Midwest Modifieds feature just
four laps into the race. He hung on to win, despite some
back-and-forth bumping with Dan Wheeler over the final two laps. It's
Wytaske's third win of the season and it helped him slightly close the
gap on points leader Kenny Wytaske. It was also Albert Wytaske's
eighth top-5 finish of the summer at Deer Creek.

Cole Queensland figured out early that the high side of the track
was the place to be. He beat Jeff Brauer and Chris Groth to the finish line for his third feature win of the season. Points leader Dustin Nelson finished fourth, his 10th top-4 finish in 11 starts this season.

Slingshot feature winners were Jordan Yaggy (Regular), Brayde
Faulhaber of Stewartville (Junior) and Dustin Sorenson of Rochester
(Pee-Wee).

The next scheduled races at Deer Creek are Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., the
next-to-last track points races of the season.
