Foss, Brauer, Wheeler and Kilby top Deer Creek Foes

By: Todd Narveson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 16) - It was a picture perfect night for the second to last night of track points at the Deer Creek Speedway. Jeff Brauer and Bobby Kilby both won their first features of the season while Keith Foss and Dan Wheeler added to their win totals in the AMSOIL Dirt Track Series.

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled on to the speedway for the first feature of the evening. Shaun Walski and Travis Krause paced the field for the eighteen lap main event.

Krause jumped to the lead early on and led the field until lap eleven. Eighth starting Dan Wheeler moved through traffic to second and closed in on Krause for the lead. Krause got pinned behind a lapped car and Wheeler took advantage and snagged the lead in turn three on the tenth circuit. A yellow on lap eleven set up and ugly crash on the restart.

Wheeler led the field into turn one, Krause started to spin in turn two and was hammered by Jim Arnold who had no place to go. Kenny Wytaske, Albert Wytaske, Carter Brandt and Bobby Swanson all were involved.

The action was not done as behind them J.R. Jones, Tyron Friese and Mike Hernke all collided behind the main incident. That vaulted Hernke up in the air into an end over end flip. The red flag flew as Hernke’s car came to rest on it’s top. All of the drivers involved were uninjured, but some major damage was inflicted on the cars.

Wheeler would pull away from the field to win his fourth feature of the season. A.J. Wiste, Bryan Hernandez, Brandon Davis and Jared Boumeester rounded out the top five.

The Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks entered the night with the tightest point battle. A.J Zvorak, Danny Hanson and Ryan Goergen entered the night just a scant six points apart in the top three.

Bobby Kilby jumped from the outside of row one to the lead and the pack waged a three wide battle for second. Dan Bork would emerge from that pack for second. A couple of cautions early on would keep the field tight.

Kilby would continue to lead the field through lap eight as Bork was still second. The driver on the move was A.J. Zvorak who started in row four. Zvorak worked his way to third on lap nine and set his sights on the leaders.

Zvorak bolted by Bork for second and then challenged Kilby for the lead. It was a dandy race up front as Zvorak wheeled to the low side of Kilby and they went side by side for the lead. Behind them, Danny Hanson was now working on Bork for third as Troy Voth was fifth.

Kilby and Zvorak pulled away a bit from the field and Zvorak was putting heavy pressure on the leader. Zvorak appeared ready to take the point, but a caution with three laps remaining slowed his progress.

Kilby took off on the restart and held off Zvorak by less than a car length at the checkered flag for his first win of 2008 at the speedway. Bork held on to third as Voth was fourth and Hanson was fifth.

Mike Keller made the long drive back to Deer Creek and sat on the pole for the U.S. Army WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Keller would hold the early advantage over Adam Stockhausen, Dave Solum and Jeff Brauer.

Brauer was on a mission tonight as he quickly took third. A yellow flag flew early for an incident in turn one. On the restart, Brauer zoomed to the low side and challenged Stockhausen for second. Brauer snuck past on lap seven.

Cole Queensland bolted by Stockhausen for third on lap eight. Another quick yellow period kept the field tight. When racing resumed Keller led, but Brauer and Queensland were right on his tail.

Brauer stayed on the low side of the track and Keller was running strong on the cushion. Brauer kept getting stronger and stronger and now we had a great race for the lead. Brauer and Keller exchanged the lead several times as they went back and forth up front.

Meanwhile, Ryan Siegle came alive and worked past Queensland for the third position with five to go. All eyes were up front as Keller and Brauer put on a whale of show for the lead. They were side by side and were dead even at the start finish line with two to go.

Brauer got a strong shot off the bottom as the white flag flew and off into turn one they went. Keller got some grip up top and pulled back even with Brauer going into three. Brauer powered hard on the bottom side and pulled ahead again. They charged to the checkered flag and Brauer scored his first feature win in the super stock class.

Keller was a close second with Siegle third. Queensland finished fourth with Chris Groth fifth. Queensland picked up some much needed points on Dustin Nelson who finished eleventh as they head into the final night of track points next Saturday.

The Valley Trailer Sales WISSOTA Late Models had a nice field of nineteen cars on had this week. What a treat for the Bloom family as Jerry Bloom sat on the pole and his son Tony was alongside for the twenty-five lap main event.

Jerry would lead lap one, but Mark Teske made an incredible move coming out of turn four on lap two. Teske shot between the Bloom’s three wide and stormed to the lead. Keith Foss was hauling as well and he charged to second in turn one.

Then the race was on, Foss caught Teske and they went at it up front. Foss was rolling around on the bottom and Teske was flying on the cushion. Foss nabbed the lead in turn four on the sixth circuit.

Eighth starting Lance Matthees was moving through traffic and now was looking at Teske’s rear bumper. Matthees and Teske reeled Foss back in on lap eight and it was now a close, three horse race for the lead.

Now Teske was working the low side and Foss went upstairs and again they were side by side for the lead with Matthees in tow. Foss once again took the lead on lap eleven. Mike Prochnow was coming through traffic as well and was now fourth.

Foss pulled away a bit aloowing Teske and Matthees to settle the race for second. Matthees got by on lap fifteen as Foss had pulled away. However the race was not done as Foss started to encounter lapped traffic.

Matthees once again reeled in the leader, but a slight bump with a lapped car cost him. That allowed Foss to scoot away to his fifth feature win of the season. Matthees would up second with Teske third. Prochnow was fourth and Joe Ludemann had another fine run in fifth.

The EZ Fabricating USRA Modifieds definitely did not want to be left out of the exciting feature racing action that had already taken place. Front row starters Todd Scharkey and Brad Waits would see to that.

What a race up front to start, Scharkey and Waits exchanged some incredible clean slide jobs and swapped the lead several times early in the race. Scharkey had the lead and Waits followed around on the blistering fast cushion. A caution on lap eight would change the complexion of the race.

Waits swung to the low side in turn one and pulled off another beautiful pass for the lead bolting by Scharkey. Then it was Steve Arpin’s turn to challenge Scharkey for second. Bob Timm was moving as well and he along with Arpin got by Scharkey for second an third.

As the race resumed it was apparent that Arpin had plenty of snuff to keep up with the speedy Waits. Arpin ran the bottom and Waits stuck to the top of the track. Arpin would have the advantage and then Waits. Timm made it a three car race up front as he was glued to Arpin’s bumper.

Arpin and Timm both snuck by Waits and were now first and second. Another yellow with six to go set up a great shootout for the win. Arpin and Timm held their ground on the bottom as Timm was now challenging for the win. Waits was still quick on the top and was moving in.

The white flag flew and Waits got a great run off the top of turn two. Waits blitzed by both Timm and Arpin and then shot to the bottom in turn three. Waits slid to the top in four as Arpin gave it one last shot.

Waits won by a half car length over Arpin with Timm right with them in third. It was Waits’ fourth win at Deer Creek. Rounding out the top five were Jason Cummins and Scharkey.

Earlier in the day on the 1/5-mile Button Buck Speedway, Dustin Sorensen won the Pee-Wee Pepsi Slingshot feature. Parker Hale won both the Junior and Senior division features.

Racing resumes next Saturday at 6:00pm for the final night of track points. It is also the final drivers free entry compliments of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Fastenal, Olympic Fire Protection and Heartland Fuels.

Then on Sunday it is another full show with all five classes in action starting at 5:00pm.
