Deer Creek Champions decided on last night in 2008

By Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 23) - What a picture perfect day for racing in Southern MN. Blue skies, a light breeze, mid 70’s temp and it showed. The crowd was absolutely awesome on the night and the drivers showed up in force with 141 cars checking into the back gate on championship night at the speedway.

Early in the afternoon racing action commenced on the Button Buck Speedway with the Junior division taking to the track for the Pepsi Slingshots. Lucas Schott jumped out to the early lead with Dustin Sorensen in second. Alex Williamson and Sydney Alberts were side by side for sixth behind Jackson Koster. A caution with four down saw a pile up on the restart. Parker Hale used the restart to his advantage and quickly moved around Sorensen for the second spot. Two laps after the restart Hale put a great move on Schott and took over the lead. Brayde Faulhaber moved past Sorensen late in the race to take home third behind Schott and Hale. Lucas Schott took home the track title in the division.

In the Pee_Wee division for the Pepsi Slingshot it was all Garrett Koster who took the lead from the drop of the Green flag. Koster was challenged early by Sorensen who quickly dropped from competition. Lexi Schott used her consistency and finished second with Brayde Faulhaber in third. Dustin Sorensen took home the track title for the division

The regular division saw Lucas Schott jump out to the early lead with Jordan Yaggy in second. Parke Hale sat in third while Mac Alberts and Blake Jenkins raced for fourth early. Some three wide racing during the middle portion of the race for the sixth spot occurred while Schott cruised home up front for the win and the track title in the class.

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up for their feature event first with Greg Pfeifer Jr., starting off with the lead from the front row. Jerry Young sat in second early and was pressuring Pfeifer for the lead early on. With two and three wide racing early it was setting up to be a great track. With twelve to go Pfeifer stayed up front with Young right there waiting for his chance. Dan Wheeler was working up through the field from his eighteenth starting spot and with a caution coming out with nine to go you knew it was going to be a great finish. Pfeifer led on the restart with a four wide race for third quickly settle as Bryan hernandez and Kenny Wytaske pulled into third and fourth behind Jared Boumeester who now sat in second. Wytaske moved into third and started to pressure Boumeester for second as another caution flew with five to go. The field stayed in this running order after the restart with Pfeifer Jr., taking home the win, his first of the season. Boumeester held on for second in front of track champion Kenny Wytaske. Wytaske did not win a feature event in the 2008 season on his way to the track title.

The Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks did not disappoint again tonight as they had another awesome race for the win. A quick caution on the start sent the point leader AJ Zvorak to the pits but was able to repair the car in time for the restart. Karl Hewitt Jr., took the lead from the drop of the green. Dan Holland, Fred Prudoehla dn Dan Bork were three wide for second early on. Bork had the top side working and took control of second as he pulled alongside of Hewitt for the lead. Bork took the lead up high with Hewitt still fighting back on the low side. With thirteen to go they were side by side at the line for the lead. A restart with thirteen to go saw Hewitt leading with Bork close in second. Dan Holland still ran in third while Danny Hanson and Scott Paulson battled for fourth. With ten to go the race up front was side by side again while Hanson worked past Holland for third. Hewitt took control again with six to go while Paulson worked into fourth. Hewitt and Bork raced side by side for the remaining laps with Hewitt having a slight lead at the line each time for the win. Zvorak was able to work up inside of the top ten to take home the 2008 track title.

Dave Solum led the field in the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock division. Dave Mass sat in second while the title chasers Dustin Nelson and Cole Queensland sat in heavy traffic. Third running Ryan Siegle moved along side of Mass for the race for second. Sixteen to go Siegle now in second worked on Solum for the lead. Siegle took the lead with thirteen to go while Mass followed him into second. A restart with eleven to go saw Queensland and Nelson side by side for third as they cleared the pack behind Siegle and Mass. The field stayed that way to the end with Mass working close but unable to take control of the race. Siegle took home the win while Nelson took home the track title.

Mike Prochnow quickly took control of the Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Model feature with Lance Matthees quickly into second. Matthees pressured Prochnow early on in the race as they pulled away from the field. Nick Herrick ran in third until John Kaanta passed him for the position in the middle of the race. Adam Hensel was slowly working through the field after starting eleventh on the field and took home the fifth spot with five to go. At the finish it was Prochnow with the win, Matthees second. However upon crossing the scale Prochnow was too light handing the win to Matthees. Herrick took home the title for the 2008 racing season.

Nate Wasmund and Steve Wetzstein battle for the lead early in the EZ fabricating USRA Modified feature with Jay Ihrke in third. A restart with twenty to go saw Wetzstein leading but Wasmund quickly took the lead on the low side. Tim Donlinger now challenged Ihrke for the second spot while Brad Waits quickly closed up from the back. Donlinger took second with fifteen to go while Waits say in fourth. Wasmund looked strong down low and was running the same line as Donlinger until lap twelve when Donlinger moved another lane lower and worked past Wasmund for the lead. Waits moved into second on the next lap running up against the outside wall. Ten to go and Donlinger was leading by less than a half car length. With five to go Waits to control of the race and took home the win and 2008 track champion title.
