CHAD SIMPSON DOMINATES CORN BELT CLASH SEASON OPENER

By Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN - (April 17) - With 130 cars in the pit area on a cool but sunny Saturday night 36 Corn Belt Clash Latemodels were on hand for the season opening event in 2010 on Gillund Enterprises,  Justice Brothers night at the speedway.  The first corner saw a three car pileup for the first and only caution of the 35 lap feature event.  With a complete restart Chad Simpson jumped out to the early lead with Chad Mahder close behind in second.    Dave Eckrich was in third with Adam Hensel in fourth early on.  With three completed Keith Foss was pressuring Hensel for fourth as Simpson had pulled out to a nice early lead.  Hensel held onto the fourth spot.  With six completed Eckrich was working Mahder over hard for the second spot while Kevin Sather and Jake Redetzke were side by side in sixth spot on Foss's rear bumper.  Simpson was using the high groove of the speedway with Mahder working the low groove on the smooth and fast racing surface.  With fifteen completed lapped traffic came into play.  With the lapped cars battling for position the leaders had to tip toe through the pack.  Simpson struggled to get through the first pack as Mahder caught up to his rear bumper.  Then Simpson cleared the cars and left Mahder to struggle through.  With eighteen down Sather worked into the top five.  Twenty laps down and Mahder still battled through the traffic allowing Eckrich and Hensel to catch up to his bumper.  Finally Mahder made it through the pack with Eckrich and Hensel now going door to door on the speedway.    Five laps later Hensel got in the right groove and worked past Eckrich who was being held up by traffic and took over the third spot.  With three laps to go Eckrich again tried to regain the third spot as he and Hensel ran side by side to the white flag.  At the line it was Simpson with the dominating win, Mahder, Hensel, Eckrich and Sather rounded out the top five.  Heat race winners were Keith Foss, Justin Sass, Adam Hensel and Chad Simpson with "B" main's going to Kyle Jumbeck and Cory Mahder.

Deer Creek Speedway sees some of the best USRA modified racing in the country and tonight was one of those nights.  Zach VanderBeek took off on the drop of the green flag for the EZ fabricating USRA modified feature with Cole Mather and Tom Paulson racing for second.  Paulson took over second spot as Jason Cummins moves up to challenge Mather for third.  Behind them Mike Sorensen and Bob Timm were side by side for fifth.  Timm took over fifth and as Cummins cleared Mather for third Timm followed through into fourth.  With six completed Cummins moved under Paulson for second, as tenth starting Jay Ihrke worked past Timm into fourth.  Three laps later Ihrke moved past Paulson for third with Timm following through into fourth.  Ten complete and Sorensen worked past Paulson for fifth spot.  With fifteen completed lapped cars came into play, as Cummins sat on VanderBeek's rear bumper.  Just then the yellow hanky waved and on the restart it was a new ball game.  Ihrke moved under VanderBeek through one and two as he slid up in front of the leader to take over the top spot.  Timm led the next lap as he tried to work under Ihrke but Ihrke regained control of the race on the next lap running the higher momentum line.  Two laps later Josh Angst jumped into the fray and worked under Timm and Cummins into the second position.  Cummins held onto third as Timm and Sorensen were again door to door for fourth.  Ihrke came home with the win his first feature win at the speedway since the summer of 2004.  Cummins got back around Angst for second with Sorensen and Timm rounding out the top five.

The US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks saw Michael Hofer jump out into the early lead and never look back.  Ryan Siegle got a great jump on the start moving up from sixth to second by the completion of lap two.  Tony Bloom looked great tonight as he ran in third early on.  Bloom caught up to Siegle with seven completed by Siegle had a faster line .  With ten down Jeff Brauer, Cole Queensland and Kevin Hager were three wide for the fifth spot behind Chris Groth.  Brauer took over the fifth spot and with fourteen down moved past Groth for fourth.  Hofer took home his first win of the season over Siegle, Bloom, Brauer and Groth.

The BP WISSOTA Street Stocks had a few cautions tonight but when the green light was lit there was some great three wide racing through the field.  Troy Voth jumped out to the early lead with AJ Zvorak in second.  Tim Johnson and Donny Ganz were side by side for third.  Johnson and Zvorak were going at it hard for second when the caution flew with two completed and Johnson going to the rear for getting into the leader causing Voth and Zvorak to make heavy contact.  Everyone was able to continue but watching Johnson come from the tail was a treat for the fans.    On the restart Voth led with Dan Holland and Zvorak now battling for second.  Rusty Kollman sat in fourth with Karl Hewitt Jr., and Danny Hanson side by side for fifth.    A restart with six down saw Voth with teh lead and Zvorak in second with Hanson pressuring him in third.    With nine down Voth pushed up in four allowing Zvorak, Hanson and the hard charging Johnson by with Johnson taking the lead with ten down.  Hanson moved past Zvoark on lap eleven as the laps wound down.  At the finish it was Johnson, Hanson, Zvorak, Kollman and Ryan Goergen in the top five.

The Mitchell Dam Bar USRA B-Modifieds have had issues with cautions this year but tonight was a little better. Brandon Hare took the early lead with Mike Jaeger close in second.  Hare ran low while Jaeger put his mount up against the wall on the speedway.  A restart with two down saw James Broseit working on Jaeger for the second spot.    Two laps later another restart saw Jake Timm move into the second spot while Dan Tenold moved into third.  Behind Tenold Jeremy Smith, Colter Deutsch and John Warrington battled for fourth.    With ten completed Tenold and Smith were close behind Timm as another caution flew over the speedway.  Hare again paced the field with Timm into second and Tenold in third trying to move into the second spot.  Kylie Kath moved below Deutsch and Smith to take over the third spot and with thirteen down worked under Timm for the third spot as Tenold moved into second.  At the line it was hare, Tenold, Kath, Timm and Warrington rounding out the top five.

Cody Gardner led the field on the drop of the green for the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event with Jared Happel in second early on.    Behind them Dustin Scott, Brandon Davis and Shaun Walski were three wide for third.  With two completed Davis took over third as Scott tried to work to his inside.  Bryan Hernandez worked into fifth on lap five as he moved past Walski for the spot.  With nine down Scott had drifted back allowing Hernandez into fourth and Walski back into the fifth spot.  With ten down the top five were all close as a restart brought them back together.  Davis took over the point with Hernandez and Gardner racing side by side for second.  Hernandez took over second as Jared Boumeester moved into the top five.    Happel and Gardner were side by side behind Hernandez and Davis as they ran for third.  With three laps left Hernandez moved past Davis to take over the lead leaving Happel, Gardner and Walski three wide for the rest of the top five.  At the finish it was Hernandez followed by Davis, Happel, Gardner and Walski.
