CLEAN SWEEPS FOR ALL BUT ONE

by Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 7) - It was a night for clean sweeps with five of the six classes having the feature winner also winning a heat race.  The only driver not able to pull off the clean sweep was Mike Sorensen in the USRA Modifieds.

Nick Herrick took the early lead in the Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Model division with Brad Waits quickly driving up into second.  Nick Beyenhof and Doug Herrick raced for third with Mike Prochnow in fifth early on.  With two down Waits drove down under Nick Herrick to take over the lead while Prochnow moved around Beyenhof for the fourth spot.  With four down the Herrick brothers were side by side for second but Prochnow decided to split up the battle on lap six as he worked past Doug.  On lap seven the Herrick's and Prochnow were three wide for the second spot as they flew out of turn four.  Prochnow took control of the position while Doug made it past brother Nick for third.   Beyenhof moved under Nick for the fourth spot with ten down.  Up front Prochnow quickly gained on Waits for the lead as a caution flew with fifteen down.  On the restart Waits led with Kelly Anderson working into the top five as he moved under Doug Herrick and Beyenhof to take over the third spot.  Anderson started to pressure Prochnow for the second spot but Prochnow found a new line and quickly moved back up to battle with Waits for the lead.  Coming to the white flag Prochnow and Waits were side by side coming out of four.  Waits got a great run exiting turn two to hold onto the lead over Prochnow and Anderson.

Fourteen year old Lucas Schott and veteran racer Mike Sorensen ran side by side for the opening lap of the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified feature event with Jay Ihrke in third.  Schott took control of the point running up high on lap two while Nate Wasmund and Ryan York raced for the fourth spot.  Wasmund took the spot as the first caution waved with three completed.  Scott led on the restart with Sorensen in second and Wasmund in third.  With eight down Tim Donlinger worked past Ihrke into fourth and then moved past Wasmund for third.  Further back in the field Darrin Walch, Todd Scharkey, Jason Cummins and York were four wide for the fourth spot.  With ten down Donlinger caught up to the front runners as they went three wide for the lead.  With eleven down they continued to race three wide with Schott dropping back to third on lap twelve.  Sorensen was able to hold off Donlinger on lap fourteen to take sole position of the point.  Walch and Ihrke were side by side for fifth with seventeen down while Cummins and Scharkey continued to battle right behind them.  With twenty down the top three were still tight up front with Sorensen still holding the point.  Two laps later Sorensen and Donlinger crossed the line in a dead heat with Sorensen holding the slightest of edge on the transponder system.  Donlinger took the lead as they came to the white but Sorensen shot out of turn two to regain control of the lead and took home the win.

Jon Duffy led out of turn two for the US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stocks with Dave Solum and Michael Hofer racing for second.  Hofer took the second spot on lap two dropping Solum back to race with Kevin Hager.  Hager took third while Ryan Siegle and Cole Queensland battled for fifth.  As Hager moved into third Queensland followed through into fourth.  Hager got a good run on lap four and moved past Hofer to battle with Duffy for the lead.  The top five were all in a tight pack with six completed and Hager and Hofer now raced for the lead.  Hager took over the point with Hofer in second.  Siegle, Queensland and Duffy now raced hard for third.  With ten down Hager and Hofer again battled for the lead.  Hofer gained the spot with eleven down running up against the wall.  Queensland moved up to race Hager on lap thirteen for the second spot.  Queensland grabbed the spot and started to reel in the leader.  With sixteen down Queensland gained the lead but Hofer regained it on lap eighteen.  Coming to the white Queensland took control of the lead again and held on for the win ahead of Hofer and Hager.

Jared Boumeester led early in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature with a three wide battle for third behind Jerry Young happening as they completed lap one.  Brandon Davis and Tom  Paulson continued their battle for third as the first caution flew on lap three.  On the restart Boumeester led with young in second.  Ric Fynbo looked strong as he worked past Paulson for the third spot.  with six completed Bryan Hernandez pressured Paulson for fourth and took the spot. At the halfway mark Hernandez worked up to Fynbo and for the next four laps they raced hard for the third spot.  The top five slowly pulled away from the rest of the field with Boumeester taking home the win over Young, Hernandez, Fynbo and Paulson.

What more can you say about the Hinz Trucking USRA b-Modifieds other than Brandon Hare.  Hare has been the dominate force since starting this class in 2010.  Tonight was no different Hare took the lead at the drop of the green.  Jacob Bleess sat in second early holding onto the spot until lap two when Kylie Kath moved into the second spot.  A caution with five down bunched the field back up with Hare leading.  Kath and Colter Deutsch raced for second.  As they raced for second they both god loose with Bleess and Shaun Walski moving past them to take over second and third again.  With seven completed Jake Timm moved past Walski to moved into third as the yellow flew.  On the restart with Hare led with Timm getting the jump and into second ahead of Bleess.  At lap ten Walski worked past Bleess to take over third while Kath quickly followed through to take over fourth from Bleess.  At the finish it was all Brandon Hare taking home the win.

AJ Zvorak had some serious work to do to his car this week after destroying it last Saturday night during the BP WISSOTA Street Stock feature.  Fellow competitor borrowed Zvorak his car for the weekend and looked strong as Zvorak led early in the feature.  A restart on lap two saw Danny Hanson, Fred Prudoehl and Jesse Stahl three wide for second behind Zvorak.  Behind them Troy Voth looked for running room.  With four laps completed Hanson moved up to race with Zvorak for the lead. while Voth had worked into the third spot.  Eight down and Zvorak still held onto a slight lead over Hanson.  As these two battle up front Voth slowly pulled up to them.  With thirteen down Hanson finally got the run and moved into the lead allowing Zvorak and Voth to decide second.  Hanson took home the win followed by Zvorak and Voth.

During intermission the Pee-Wee division of the Truck Country slingshots raced on the Button Buck Speedway.  A payout for the division was created by DMC Plumbing of Pine Island.  BB's Pizzaria, Kelly Drafting and Legends Concrete all of Rochester.  We thank them for their support of the slingshot program.  Jim Chisholm jumped out front at the drop of the green.  Spencer Ihrke ran in second followed by Jackson Hale.  Hale pressured Ihrke for the second spot during the feature run but was unable to complete a pass as Chisholm took home the win.

Earlier in the day Derek Clement jumped out front in the Junior division while Jackson Koster pressured him early from second.  Dustin Sorensen found himself in third ahead of Lexi Schott.  Clement was strong out front and cruised home for the win.

In the Senior division three restarts were needed to get the event under way.  Dustin Sorensen took the early lead away from Jeremy Paulson.  Matthew Schliesman sat in third while Brady Keefe and Lucas Schott raced for fifth.  With three complete Sorensen pushed up in turn two allowing Paulson to shoot under and into the lead.  Another caution bunched the field back up with Paulson leading  Schliesman took over the second spot ahead of Sorensen. while  Schott, Schott and Nia Gardner were three wide for the fourth spot.  Gardner took the spot ahead of Lexi who held off her older brother Lucas for fifth.
