LABOR DAY DUAL HAS FANS ON EDGE OF THEIR SEATS

by Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (September 4) - The BP WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the track for the first feature event of the Baudoin Oil, BP Labor Day Dual event on this cool Saturday night.  Nicholas Schwebach jumped out to the early lead with Shaun Mann and Mike Blowers racing for second.  Troy Voth caught Mann and started racing for the second spot as Blowers had pulled out into second.  With three down Voth moved into third with Donny Ganz following through to fourth.  With four down Ganz started to race with Voth for the third spot behind them a tight pack formed with five cars battling for position.  Blowers stayed close to Schwebach and was working to his inside with seven completed while Danny Hanson worked into the top five.  With nine down Blowers and Schwebach were side by side for the lead.  Hanson worked into fourth and was chasing Ganz down as the caution flew with ten down.  On the restart Blowers led with Ganz in second and Hanson now into third.  Two laps later Ganz took over the lead while Blowers ran in second.  Hanson sat in third as the top three were all close.  AJ Zvorak and Schwebach raced for fourth as the laps clicked down. With fifteen down Hanson, Blowers and Ganz were three wide for the lead and as the white flew Ganz held the point by a slight margin over Hanson.  Exiting turn four Hanson took over the lead and took home the checkers for his eleventh win of the season tying Travis Krause and Jim Gustafson for most wins in a season all in street stock competition.

Cory Davis wrestled away the early lead from Harlan Morehart in the US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stocks.  Cole Queensland quickly moved around Morehart for the second spot as a tight pack raced for position behind them.  Jeff Brauer and Tony Bloom worked into third and fourth as Queensland started to gain on Davis up front.  With six laps completed Queensland was on Davis's rear bumper looking for room to make a pass.  Davis held him off and as t he two raced for the spot Brauer quickly gained on them.  A caution with eight down saw Davis leading, Brauer and Queensland side by side for second while Gary Wiersgalla worked into fourth ahead on Bloom.  Ten down and Brauer now in second started to gain on the leader but pushed up in turn four on lap  twelve allowing Queensland to moved back into the spot.  With fourteen complete Brauer and Queensland swapped racing grooved with Brauer moving back into the second spot as Davis cruised out front.  Davis took home the win followed by Brauer and Queensland.

Next up were the highlighted features of the night with the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series up first.  The front three rows stayed in formation for a lap until Jeff Larson took control of the event in front of Nick Beyenhof.  Chad Simpson sat in third while Chris Simpson and Brad Waits battled for fourth on lap two.  A caution with three complete saw Larson leading while midpack Dennis Hillson rolled his machine on the front stretch bringing out another caution. This time on the restart Larson led with Waits working into second.  Larson got loose off of four and came down slightly bumping into Beyenhof who then bumped into Chad Simpson.  All three drivers kept going with Larson still holding a slight edge over Waits.  Beyenhof was in third with Chris Simpson now in fourth.  Eight completed saw Chad Simpson, Chris Simpson and Adam Hensel racing three wide for fourth.  Chris Simpson took the spot and moved under Beyenhof for third in one move.  With ten complete Waits was working low on Larson up front as lap traffic looked to take part in this one.  Thirteen down and Larson was still leading with Waits in second but the Simpson brothers were right there behind Waits as the top four weaved through lap traffic.  Chris Simpson worked into second on lap fifteen while Waits and Chad Simpson raced for third.  Two laps later Chris Simpson took over the point as Larson dropped back to fourth after getting held up by a slower car.  Chad Mahder took over fourth on lap twenty one as another caution flew.  On the restart Chris Simpson led with Waits in second, Mahder and Chad Simpson raced for third.  Mahder took over third while up front the battle really heated up.  Waits raced up high and Chris Simpson down low as they went side by side for the lead.  Waits took the spot with twenty six completed.  With thirty complete Chad Simpson started to work low on Chris for second.  Chad took the spot and quickly gained ground on Waits up front.  Chad Simpson took the lead on lap thirty three with Waits in second.  Chris Simpson in third with Mahder and Hensel rounding out the top five as they completed the last two circuits.  Chad Simpson took home the win and the series crown for the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series.

The final race of the night was the United States Modified Touring Series Hunt for the Championship.  It was announced before the start of the race that Randy and Patti Eastvold of Hanson Tire in LeRoy were kicking in an additional $1000 to the feature winner making the show a $4,000 to win race.  Nate Wasmund rocketed out front on the drop of the green with Mike Sorensen working past Tommy Weder Jr. for  the second spot.  Kevin Pittman and Ron VerBeek ran inside the top five early on.  A restart with three down saw Wasmund leading and Pittman working into third.  Steve Wetzstein and VerBeek raced for fourth.  With five down Sorensen moved back into second while Wetzstein, VerBeek and Pittman now raced for third.    Wetzstein took the third spot.  Ryan Gustin sati in sixth in front of a large pack of cars battling for position three and four wide through the fifteenth spot.  Wasmund continued to lead on lap eleven as Pittman and VerBeek continued their race for fourth just in front of Gustin and Jason Hughes.  VerBeek took over fourth on lap thirteen while up front Sorensen and Wetzstein gained on the leader.  Eighteen laps into the feature and Hughes worked past VerBeek for the fourth spot.  With twenty one competed the top four were running close with the top three on the bottom of the speedway and Hughes up against the cushion.  Hughes took over third on lap twenty four but Wetzstein fought back on lap twenty five.  On lap twenty eight Sorensen made his move for  the lead and raced Wasmund for  the point.  Wasmund kept the spot and with twenty nine down Wetzstein was now working Sorensen for second.  Sorensen again pulled alongside of Wasmund on lap thirty and then took the lead.  Four laps later Wasmund, Hughes and Wetzstein were three wide for the second spot.  Hughes took it on lap thirty five.  As the white flag flew on the event lap traffic looked to come into play.  Sorensen played them perfectly taking home the win over Hughes.  Wetzstein moved into third while Wasmund came in fourth ahead of VerBeek.
