Heavelow Scores Sprint Win and Celebrates Birthday in Victory
Lane
by: Chuck Stowe
ODESSA, MO (June 16, 2007) – “The racing just does not get any better than
this”, was the comment from fans and drivers alike. “This is basic, hard
charging, grass roots racing” said I-70 Speedway owner, Brad McDonald. “If you
are a true dirt fan and you are not attending the Friday of Saturday night dirt
shows, you are truly missing out” concluded McDonald, after watching the DCRA
Dwarf Car/Mod Lites and the I-70 Speedway Sprint Cars Feature events, on
Saturday night.
Twenty one DCRA Cars where on hand for the second round of Dwarf Car/Mod Lite
racing action at the I-70 Dirt Track. Three qualifying heat race set the stage
for a twenty lap A Feature event that was full of thrills and spills. When Chief
Starter, Rodney Hawkins threw the Checkered Flag, it was the 48 of Brandon Gray
that crossed the line first. Following Brandon was the #4 of Greg Nellis, 98
Jeff Raffurty, 641 Michael Raffurty, 201 Nate Ginest, 12 Devin Krahl, 28 Rob
Powell, 7 Elmo Lane, 23z Zeke Langley, 181 Jim Seichepine, 99 Bradley Taylor, 46
Daryl Kabriel, 35 Mike Sedgewick, 13 Bill Zabel, 75 Rick Raffurty, 24 Mike
Smith, 101 Danny Lane, 18 Kelly Bergstrom, 2 John Sharp and the 26r of Jeanie
Rodie. The #64 of David Raffurty was unable to make the call for the Feature
event.
When it’s your day, it’s just your day and today was veteran open wheel driver
Phil Heavelow’s day. Not only was it Phil’s first Sprint Car Feature win at
I-70, it was Phil’s Birthday. And, the entire crowd sang Happy Birthday to Phil
as he climbed out of his #44 sprinter in Victory Lane. Heavelow was not with out
luck on his special day, after leading most of the early laps; Zack Goulden took
the lead from Heavelow only to give it back when his engine expired with only 4
laps to go. Behind Heavelow at the finish was the #43 of Frank Brown, by inches
over the 36L of Joseph Larkin, 3 Rob Hockett, 24 Alen Billings, 82 Michael
Brown, 12 Ryan Rector, 2 Russ Brown, 49 Zack Goulden and the 88 of Chad Tye. The
# 1x of Ricky Ryun was unable to make the call for the feature event.
The I-70 Speedway Sprint Cars return to the dirt track on Saturday night July
21st and the DCRA Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites will return on Saturday night July 28th.
Remember, Saturday nights at I-70 are “Two for One Saturdays” where you see the
Asphalt show and the Dirt Track show for one single admission price.
