$5,000 Tom Wilson BBQ Bowl Win Goes to Dustin Boney, Brian Johnson and Chris Brockway Also Claim CMS Victories!
By Sam Stoecklin

WARRENSBURG, MO (July 4, 2010) - The Seventh Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl has come and gone with three big nights of racing over the Independence Day Holiday weekend. Things got underway on Friday, continued on Saturday, and then finished on Sunday night with the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win Modified feature. A total of 90 cars in three classes checked in for racing with 53 Modifieds, 20 B-Modifieds, and 17 Street Stocks competing in a total of 17 events throughout the evening.

B-modifieds kicked off the evening’s races with three qualifying heat races. Brad Smith, already a feature winner this weekend, took the opening heat with Jacob Ebert, A.J. Tice, and Nic Bennett inside the top four. Troy Carlyle grabbed heat two over Chris Brockway, Owen Evinger, and Gary Fain. The third and final heat race saw Mike Tanner take the victory ahead of Dalton Kirk, Lucas Isaacs, and Rusty Trimble. With the field set and Brad Smith on pole for the main event, the b-modifieds set sail for the twenty-lap main event. From the onset it was Smith who paced the field pulling out to big lead during the first two-thirds of the race. Yellow flags flew early in the event before the drivers finally settled into a solid race rhythm with the best battles on the speedway being between Brockway, Carlyle, Ebert, and Tanner behind the leader. Brockway had the low side figured out with the best bite off of corner number two as Brad Smith’s car began to creep up out of the preferred lower line. By lap seven, Dalton Kirk moved his way into third position with Carlyle, Tanner, and Lucas Isaacs racing inside the top six. By lap twelve Smith was walking away with the event but a lap fourteen caution forever changed the outcome of the b-mod main event. On the restart Brockway’s power off of corner number two proved to be too much for Smith in the #99 on this night as he was able to make the pass heading into corner number three for the white flag. At the stripe, it was Brockway who picked up his first CMS feature win of the year with Smith close behind in second position. Kirk maintained third at the line with Lucas Isaacs, older brother Ethan Isaacs, and Jeremy Lile all recording top six finishes by race end.

Street Stocks were next to hit the field for two heat races as Jerry Schmidt mastered the high side off of corner number two to take the win over Bennie Turner, Bobby Ruff and Charles Laizure. Defending and two-time track champion Brian Back in Black Johnson grabbed the win in the second heat over Michael Mullins, Chad Eickleberry and Thomas Roberts. For the main event, Johnson secured the pole by virtue of his passing points totals with Jerry Schmidt to the outside. By lap four, the Bandit Chad Eickleberry found himself in second position just as a scary incident on the back stretch eliminated Charles Laizure, Anthony Whitham, and Mike Higley. Brian Cox, who was just behind this trio, had to take evasive action to miss the stalled machines and climbed the back stretch berm in the process. All drivers were okay after the incident and the race ultimately resumed with Johnson still leading the way. Schmidt, Thomas Roberts, and Marc Carter all ran strong inside the top five until a caution period slowed the field late in the race. Upon the restart, Eickleberry looked like he had his machine dialed in for the track conditions; however, it was too late in the race to overtake leader Johnson who went on to his third feature win of the year. Eickelberry finished second, Shmidt third, Roberts fourth, Carter fifth, and Bobby Ruff sixth.

Heat-race action continued with the modifieds as passing points were used to determine the top twelve drivers to participate in the intermission-time redraw. Warrensburg’s Dean Wille drove to victory in the first heat over Tom Charles, Wes Summers, and Tyler Schmidt. Terry Phillips, last year’s winner of the big race, took heat two over Johnny Bone, Jr., William Gould of Calera, Oklahoma, and Nic Bidinger. Veteran driver Rick Beebe drove to the win in heat three over Cody Agler, Lucas Conley, and Yancy Shepard. The winner of the BBQ bowl two years ago was Jeremy Payne, and he took the victory in heat five over Mark Dotson, Justin Boney, and Don Crnkovich. Heat race five went to Fair Grove driver Mickey Burrell over James McMillin, Steven Glen of Hamilton, Missouri, and Travis Johnson. Previous weekly feature race winner Jason Thompson secured the victory in heat six over Mt. Ayr, Iowa driver Dennis Elliott, Mark Shafman of Edwardsville, Kansas, and Keith Lewandowski. With the top twelve re-draw taken care of and position 13 thru 17 determined by the next drivers in the passing points order, two b-main events were contested with only the top two drivers advancing on to the night two scramble event. A total of forty-one cars were competing for the scramble starting positions and the top twelve to set the outside row for the main event, which led to high drama to see who would transfer out of the two hotly contested b-mains. For the first race Justin Boney recovered from an opening night MSD box failure to take the win and transfer to the scramble along with Don Crnkovich of Lenexa, Kansas. The final two transfer cars from the second b-main were Lucas Conley and Travis Johnson.

Dustin Boney, the night one scramble winner, started the main event on the pole with night two scramble winner Dean Wille to his outside in second place. Boney took command once flagman Hershel Thompson’s green flag waved for the start. Shad Badder stayed close to Boney early in the event with Jeremy Payne, Wille and Darren Fuqua all giving chase to the leader inside the top five. The race was slowed after lap four for a caution flag and again on lap seven. By lap ten, Boney led Jeremy Payne, Badder, Tommy Meyer, Fuqua, Johnny Bone, Jr., and Mark Dotson. By lap ten, both Luke Feeback and Justin Boney’s nights came to an early end; Dean Will had to leave the race early on as well. Tommy Meyer and Shad Badder swapped sheet metal in a close battle for fourth with Bone behind them clicking off cars lap-after-lap from his fourteenth starting position. On lap nineteen, Myer’s strong run came to an end with a flat tire as Jim Moody brought out a caution in his machine in turn two after some contact with another car in turn one. At the thirty lap mark, Boney was still pacing the field with Payne in hot pursuit behind him, Bone had made his way into third with ten laps remaining. On lap thirty-one, Badder’s weekend came to a close as he was forced to leave the track. Payne stayed glued to Boney’s bumper late in the race and he even tried to mount a final charge to the front, which was slowed by his car becoming unsettled in turns one and two. Boney, already a four-time CMS feature winner, was just too strong for the field as he kept Payne behind him in second to the line for a $5,000 pay check. Bone, Jr. settled for third after advancing eleven positions as Dotson crossed the line in fourth just in front of Terry Phillips in fifth, Joe Walker sixth, Mikey Burrell seventh, and Rick Beebe rounding out the top eight finishers.
