Griffin, Long, Taylor Among Winners at the Scotland County Speedway

MEMPHIS, MO (Sat., August 20, 2011) - The Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO put another weekly Saturday night racing program in the books, despite rain showers to the north and south of the track. At the end of the night Jake Griffin (ULMA Late Models), Michael Long (UMP Modifieds), Beau Taylor (Stock Cars), Mike Shelton (SportMods), Clayton Crump (Hobby Stocks) and Mike Hornung Jr. (Hornets) all picked up victories in there respective classes.

The first feature of the night was the 10 lap Hornet feature, with Brandon Housley and Justin Millhouse leading the field to the green flag. But it was 6th place starter Mike Hornung Jr. who quickly moved to the front on lap 1 of the event. Hornung Jr. would lead all 10 laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Devin Still was 2nd, Eric Still was 3rd, Housley was 4th, with Dennis Schulte coming home in 5th.

Justin Jennings and Jake Griffin drew the front row for the 10 lap ULMA Late Model feature, with Griffin grabbing the lead on the drop of the green. Jennings would race Griffin side-by-side for the next 8 laps, with Griffin edging him out at the line each lap to keep the lead. Griffin would hold off Jennings over the final 2 laps to pick up his 5th win of the season at the track and 6th overall. Jennings settled for 2nd, Dick Weber was 3rd, Danny Lorton was 4th, with Vance Wilson rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 12 lap Stock Car feature, with John Oliver Jr. and Gary Harward drawing the front row. Oliver Jr. would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Harward. On the completion of lap 3 Harward would spin his machine in turn 2 to bring out the first caution of the event. On the restart Beau Taylor would jump to the outside of Oliver Jr. to grab the top spot away on lap 4. But Oliver Jr. would gain the lead back on lap 5, with a run off the bottom coming out of turn 4. Oliver Jr. then had to work to hold back Taylor, Derrick Agee and Harward over the final 8 laps. But disaster would strike Oliver Jr. on lap 11 when he slowed in turn 2 with a left rear flat tire to bring out the caution. This would set up a green-white-checkered finish. Taylor would grab the advantage on restart and then held off Agee over the final lap to pick up the win. Oliver Jr. would come back through the field to claim 3rd, Harward was 4th, with Todd Phillips coming home in 5th.

Tim Pettibone and Clayton Crump led the field to the green in the 12 lap Hobby Stock feature, with Crump grabbing the lead on the drop of the green. Crump started to pull away from the three car battle for second between Tony Teninty, Derek Kirkland and Pettibone. But Andrew Hustead would spin his machine coming off turn four on lap 8 to bring out the caution. On the restart Crump again grabbed the lead, with Teninty, Kirkland and Pettibone making it a four car battle. Crump would hold off all challenges over the final 4 laps to pick up the win. Teninty settled for 2nd, Kirkland was 3rd, Pettibone was 4th, with Justin Bevill rounding out the top 5.

Michael Long and Steven DeLonjay drew the front row for the 12 lap UMP Modified feature, with Long moving out front on the drop of the green. Long would pull away from the field to lead all 12 laps and pick up another win. Mark Burgtorf made a rare start in the Modified division and started 4th and finished 2nd, DeLonjay came home in 3rd, Jake Griffin was 4th, with Jim Roach coming home in 5th.

The final feature of the night was the 12 lap SportMods, with Mike Shelton and Brandon Dale leading the field to the drop of the green. Shelton would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1. Dale would try to get under Shelton over the next 7 laps, but Shelton was able to hold him off each lap. Brett Lowry would jump to the top of the speedway on lap 8 to grab 2nd away from Dale and then went to work on Shelton for the lead. As Shelton and Lowry battled side-by-side for the lead over the next 4 laps, Scott VanBuskirk, who started 5th, was working his way to the front to make it a four car battle. Lowry would slip on the white flag lap, which allowed VanBuskirk to get by and try to make a run at Shelton. But Shelton would hold on to pick up the win. VanBuskirk settled for 2nd, Dale would edge out Lowry at the line by inches to claim 3rd, with Rick Barlow Jr. coming home in 5th.
