May 6, 2006 Race report from 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO
by Pam Hassler

MOBERLY, MO. (May 6, 2006) - "Down came the rain and washed the races out" - Last Week, April 29 - BUT Moberly's 24 Raceway rebounded on Saturday Night May 6, after a week of clouds, a little rain, and cooler temperatures, to have a great night of racing action with 96 race cars in six classes!

The race track was in super shape - many racers commented on how fast and smooth it was! No dust at all!

A nice crowd of fans attended this special Fan Appreciation Night with $5 admission tickets. A "gazillion" kids came in FREE with family to watch their favorite drivers zoom around the track and some lucky kids (and adults) received prizes donated by the 24 Raceway, Williams-Smith-Terry Racing, and other local businesses. Anyone interested in donating prizes, please contact the track at 660-269-9300.

Jr. Fan Club member Melissa Abel, 6 years old of Renick, was the winner of the huge Remote Control Rock Crawler.

Moberly's Jesse James Cole was the lucky 50/50 winner of $190!

Big THANK YOU's went to ALL the sponsors of the track!!!!!

What a special treat it was to watch the Hot Air Balloon take off from outside turn 2 and float across the track right before the National Anthem. It was owned by Fred and Judy Schoening and crewed by Kenny and Jeannie Gilski. Thanks!

Travis Redburn, the track's roving reporter, was kept busy interviewing and reporting, keeping the fans informed of activity in the infield. University of Misouri's Journalism students were again visiting. Hawkeye News also had reporters.

COMING EVENTS:
May 13 - Pepsi Americas will sponsor the Sportsman Feature with $400 to win!
*** Family Special Admission is $30 for 2 adults and 3 children (6-12) ***

May 27 - Isle of Capri will sponsor the Gary Scott Memorial Race featuring the WOW (Winged Outlaw Warriors)
360 Sprint Cars.

Race Results for Saturday Night - May 6th

4-Cyl. Hornets
Twenty-two Hornets started the feature race! Car # 21, Brooke Hassler (Columbia) started in 3rd place behind Rob (# 3) and Kristi (# 33) Chase of Clark, Mo who were the 1st and 2nd place winners of that special Hornet feature on April 22. After the start, Hassler slipped under the Chase cars on the first turn to take the lead and maintained that lead throughout the race. Chase # 3 challenged # 21 several times but couldn't overtake him. Richard Moret #02 (Cairo) finished 4th and John Brown # 01 (Huntsville) finished 5th. This was Hassler's first career victory which was very exciting for him, but also for this writer - HIS MOM!

Hobby Stocks
Twenty Hobby cars started the feature race! Clinton Dale # 7 (Jacksonville) dominated the race ahead of many side-by-side racers - often 3 abreast. A couple of yellow flags caused restarts but # 7 continued to lead and finish as the winner. Kevin Renzelmann #41 (Moberly) was on the tail of # 7 early but had to settle for 2nd place. Tom Elsen #11 (Clarence) came in third after passing #51 Alan Hultz of Moberly (4th) and #11W Michael Wolfe of Madison (5th - and the previous winner on April 22). Clinton Dale said in his victoy interview that there were "fast cars and good competition".

Moberly Motors B-Modifieds
Twenty B-Mods started the feature race! After coming to the green flag with an even pace, #82 Kelly Smith of Kirksville took the lead and ran away without a challenge and maintained a several car length lead. An exciting battle throughout the race was between # 3 Bob Woodrow (Perry), #32 Brad Pfeiffer (Columbia), and #20 Tony Garner (Macon) who finished as written. At one time, Garner slipped under Pfeiffer and Woodrow but was passed back on the next lap which provided fun racing action. Dustin Bowling #36 (Lentner) and Chuck Melloway # 74x (Hallsville) were both hard-chargers as well. A few yellow flags caused a time issue for completion but two "Green, White, Checkered" situations settled the race.

Limited Late Models
Only two Late Models started the feature race! The cars came to the green flag side by side but right after the second turn, #42 Marion Hooton broke, so #27 Danny Lorton went on around the track to receive the checkered flag! Has to be the shortest race in history! In order to keep this class on the schedule for their next date of June 17, there may just need to be a guarantee of 8 or more cars with the pit entry fee made in advance. We'll just have to see what discussion this generates.

Sportsman
Sixteen Sportsman cars started the feature race! This exciting race provided the fans with lots of great racing action and a couple yellow flags. Several high-low passing challenges made the racers work for their positions. However, # 14 Pete Agee (Huntsville) prevailed as he took the checkered flag before hard-chargers # 01 Jeff Creed (Cairo) in second and # 111 Butch Bailey (Novelty) in third. A good battle for 4th and 5th was between # 69A Jerry Ames (Huntsville) and # 3 Tim Eravi (Moberly). Three cars sustained damage from a spin from #14JR Derrick Agee and a couple late hits into him off of turn 1 causing all three to retire to the pits.

A-Modifieds
Fifteen A-Mods started the feature race! This fast race started with # 22c Vance Wilson (Frankford) taking the lead and racing there through lapped cars for the victory. Curt Potter # 11P (Boonville) tried the high and the low grooves to make an effort to lessen the distance but had to be content with second place. Kenny Mudd in # 66 (Winfield) finished third after getting "stuck" in some of the lapped traffic. Kelly Smith #41 (Kirksville) was often on 3 wheels as he came out of the corners to finish 4th. Terry Wilson #15 (Bowling Green) started from the rear of the pack to obtain the 5th position. This was Vance Wilson's 92nd career win and his 3rd of the season at 24 Raceway.

Please join the excitement at Moberly's 24 Raceway high-banked dirt oval next Saturday May 13 for the competition in all the classes of cars and witness the battle for the victory with a 1st place win of $400 in the Pepsi Americas 2006 Sportsman Feature!

Admission will be $12 for adults and $5 for children (6-12). Remember the Family ticket special of $30 (2 adults and 3 children 6-12yrs). Dirt track racing at its best happens again this Saturday at 7pm, with hot laps following a short driver's meeting at 6 pm. Check the website of www.24racewaymoberly.com under the forum section for additional information, promotions, and season point standings for all the classes.
