Saturday evening, June 3, proved to be a beautiful night for "dirt track racing at it's best" at the 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO.
Pam Hassler - 24 Raceway, Moberly MO

MOBERLY, MO (June 3, 2006) - Saturday evening, June 3, proved to be a beautiful night for "dirt track racing at it's best" at the 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO. The pits were filled with 118 race cars which included the five regular classes (4-cyl. Hornets, Hobby Stock, Sportsman, B-Mods, and A-Mods) along with the Dwarfs/Mod Lites. The good crowd of fans didn't even need a jacket until possibly the last race which concluded at the reasonable time of 10:50 PM. Even an unknown pilot of a motorized hang-glider passed over the track to the delight of the crowd.

CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE

Leslie Baker was a former mechanic, owner, and driver of a Sportsman #49. Sadly, he passed away earlier this year. His wife (Regina Baker) and daughter (Carrie Davenport) graciously shared his Pontiac Formula Firebird to be the evening's pace car. Since Ben Ballard from Sturgeon also drives a #49, he was presented with $25. Likewise, winners in each of the classes of cars also received $25 and the Sportsman winner - an extra $100.
Ron Roberts of Moberly passed away from a heart attack this past week. He was a great fan of racing and worked on cars through the years. His son drove Ron's truck for a special memorial lap with Steve Hisle (Hobby #01
Liberty) and Brad Smith (A-Mod #99 Excello) on each side of the missing man formation.

HAPPY FANS

Noelle Eravi from Moberly was the 11-year old girl who was very excited when she won the "girl's" bicycle donated by Charleton Motor Sports - sponsor of the #22c A-Modified driven by 6-time feature winner Vance Wilson.

Ron Wagner of Perry was delighted to be the lucky winner of $147 from the 50/50 Drawing.

Many fans received several prizes from a number of generous sponsors and racers.

RACE RESULTS

SPORTSMAN:
The first race of the evening was the 12-Lap Sportsman class starting 16 cars. With the first three rows inverted from the heat race winners and an extra $100 on the line in memory of Leslie Baker, a wheel-to-wheel start provided a lot of action. After Clinton Dale (#12 Jacksonville) grabbed the lead, Pete Agee (#14 Huntsville) had a little assistance and slipped up turn 1 and into the wall causing a yellow. Racing action continued with the top five finding the inside groove. Into the 7th lap, Rick Girard (#00
Columbia) lost a lot of car "innards" when his drive shaft snapped leaving smoking parts on the back stretch and some injuries to his leg. Dale continued the lead to capture his first checkered flag win of the season in this class, with Jeff Creed (#01 Cairo) in 2nd followed by 3rd place finisher Butch Bailey (#111 Novelty). Fourth and fifth places were filled by Buddy Cundiff (#9 Harrisburg) and Jerry Ames (#69A Huntsville) who had to start in the rear after an earlier race incident.

4-Cyl. HORNETS:
The first two rows were inverted in this 12-lap race which started with a loaded field of 25 Hornets. Brooke Hassler (#21 Columbia) slipped around the front row and captured the lead and wasn't about to give it up throughout this action-filled race. Although he was challenged by Kristi Chase (#33 Clark) and Jerry Warren (#03 Moberly), Hassler excitedly took his 3rd checkered flag of the season which also extended his points lead. Unfortunately, former points leader, Rob Chase (#03 Clark) had a little help when he "banged" hard into the front wall which caused him to leave the race. Warren, K.Chase, and Tanner Richards (#3R Boonville) passed each other a few times before they finished 2, 3, and 4 respectively after a late race restart. Hassler thanked his nervous mom (this writer!) and dad, daughter Allie, and acknowledged appreciation to the track officials. Good racing!

HOBBY:
This 12-lap race started 19 cars with the first 2 rows inverted. On the first lap Steve Hisle (#01 Liberty) hit hard on the back wall and said he "just lost it" but will "repair it later". A complete restart allowed Larry Krog (#6 Clarence) and Kevin Renzelmann (#41 Moberly) to battle side-by-side until Renzelmann took off and extended the lead, with Krog heartily chasing him. Mike Wolfe (#11w Madison) put the pressure on Krog late in the race but had to settle for 3rd. Alan Hultz (#51 Madison) took the checkered in 4th place after sneaking under Tom Elsen (#11 Clarence)who took 5th. Renzelmann was proud to win his first Hobby race and said it "felt good" and thanked his sponsors.

DWARFS/MOD LITES:
24 Raceway again welcomed twenty Dwarfs and Mod Lites which presented the crowd with a 4-wide salute in the pre-race parade lap. The straight-up start began as David Raffurty (#64 Kansas City) "squirted" ahead of Bud Lee (#21 Salina, KS). This tight race for the lead was exciting as Raffurty and Lee passed back and forth several times and split to go around lapped traffic. It was at the white flag and around turn 4 when Lee took the low line and passed Raffurty to take the checkered flag victory. Tony Tracy (#99 Raymore) finished in 3rd followed by Jeff Raffurty (#98 Lee's Summit) in 4th and Justin Buckholtz (#69B Pleasant Hill, IL) in 5th. This was a no-caution, fast-action race that thrilled the fans! Lee thanked his wife and his sponsors.

MOBERLY MOTORS B-MODS:
The Moberly Motors B-Mods race started with 20 highly-charged eager drivers. The straight-up feature started with wheel-to-wheel action between Tony Garner (#20 Macon) and Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) who wrestled for the top spot early in the race. Chris Leathers (#17 Macon) and Bob Woodrow (#3 Perry) battled for position with Brad Pfeiffer (#32 Columbia) following. There was great close competition throughout the pack. Then as the race progressed, Smith and Woodrow became fighters for the win as the fast Garner slipped back to finish 3rd. Kelly Smith became the "champ" of the race - his 2nd win of the season. Tough racer Woodrow, the season points leader with 4 wins, settled into 2nd. After a challenge, Leathers (#17) finished 4th with Pfeiffer (#32) close in at 5th. A good competitive race!!!

A-MODIFIEDS:
The 25-lap A-Mod started with 18 super fast cars as the first two rows
were inverted. Vance Wilson (#22c Frankford), the current points leader
holding a 6-0 record, had some unfortunate activity which resulted in car damage, but after a few adjustments and going to the rear, he worked hard controlling his car all the way through the pack to finish 4th. With more than half the race to go, David Holder (#7x Clarence) took the lead and wonderfully handled lapped traffic to the checkered flag. Curt Potter (#11P
Boonville) and Terry Wilson (#15 Bowling Green) battled for 2nd and 3rd. Jon Melloway (#20m Hallsville) fought hard through the pack to finish 6th behind 5th place Dave Kinder (#3 Moberly). Wilson was stripped of his undefeated record as David Holder received the $175 bounty and knocked off the "king". Thanks went to Jim Brittingham of Bentz GM Country and 24 Raceway for offering the bounty. Good night of A-Mod racing!
