Calhoon, Carpenter get first Red Cloud wins
By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (August 4, 2006) - Brian Calhoon of Beloit, KS, and Fairbury’s Josh Carpenter both picked up their first wins of the season in their respective divisions in racing action at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, August 4.

Calhoon took the lead on lap 2 from Joby Hanson in the IMCA Modified feature and held on through the 20-lap caution filled race. ‘The Red Cloud Rocket’ Lonnie Schriner stayed glued to Calhoon’s back bumper most of the race but could not make a pass and settled for second. Jon Thompson finished third, followed by Brandon Blochlinger and Dusty Blake. Heat race winners were Calhoon, Lonnie Veteto, and Schriner.

It appeared ‘The Fairbury Flyer’ Carpenter was going to have to settle for second place in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature until leader Jason Schoenberger made a mistake. Schoenberger, who led the first 16 laps of the 20-lap race, got high in turn 2 on lap 17, allowing Carpenter, Josh Hudson and Brett Behrends to get by. Schoenberger was able to recover to get in line fourth. Carpenter led the remaining distance to the checkers, followed by Hudson, Behrends, heat one winner Schoenberger, and Lance Borgman. Matt Streit won the other heat race.

After wrecking one week ago, Blue Hill’s Jamie Reiman bounced back to win his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Reiman led all 14 laps to make his first appearance in victory lane since May 19. Rhett Kingsbury finished second, followed by Jared Lewis, Chase Carraher, and point leader Jim Buss. Joe McDole and Delbert Selvage won the two heat races.

Guide Rock’s Ron & Kent Duffy won an unusual Cruiser feature, their fifth of the season. They led the first 5 laps of the 10-lap event before race officials threw a caution flag and turned the cars around to run backwards the remaining five laps. On the restart, Joe & Jacob Krone got around the Duffys to take the lead. On the final lap, the top two cars made contact with the Krones spinning and Duffys driving on to victory. Joe & Pat Hersh finished second, followed by Jesse Taylor & Keith Bary. Heat race winners were Doug & Jason Monty.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday night, August 11, with the regular four divisions in competition. Race time is 8:00 p.m.
