McCarty Chalks Up Another, Haines Gets One Back At Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, NE (June 3, 2006) - A large crowd came to Lincoln County Raceway on June 3 to watch not only the regular classes, but the open Late Model class as well. They witnessed Kenny McCarty, Thomas Lower, and Trent Hansen of North Platte, Robby Haines of Benkelman, and Brady Koch of Cambridge win some exciting A Features.

Kenny McCarty started on the front row of the Late Model A Feature, but a flat tire during a caution sent him to the pits. He got the tire fixed and restarted at the back of the pack. Shane Lewis of North Platte inherited the lead one the race got going, followed by Gary Dechant of Northglenn, Colo. Dechant took the lead on lap five and enjoyed the top spot until McCarty worked his way through the field and began to challenge for the top spot. On lap twelve, McCarty took it and never looked back. Dechant held onto second place, followed by Valentine drivers Tyler Reagle and Gary Long. Cory Gordon of Northglenn, Colo., finished in fifth place. McCarty and Lewis were also the heat race winners.

Robby Haines lost the IMCA Modified A Feature two weeks ago on the last corner of the last lap. This week, Haines worked his way to the lead on lap seven and would not relinquish it. Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson and Bob Aspenleiter of North Platte stayed together for nearly the entire laps, with Hagan getting the runner-up spot. Jim Mlady of North Platte made a late charge to finish in fourth place, while Brad Turner of North Platte held on for fifth place. Aspenleiter, along with fellow North Platte drivers Jay Steffens and Andrew Dillenburg, won the heat races in the IMCA Modified division.

The IMCA Stock Cars put on a terrific race, slowed by only one caution with only four laps to go. Terry Fletcher of North Platte paced the first seven laps of the race. That was when business picked up at the front. Brady Koch snuck by Fletcher on lap eight, only to give it back on the next lap. Koch again had the lead on lap ten, and the two were joined by four other drivers at the front. North Platte hot shoes Todd Chrisman and Zach Schultz were two among the throng. Chrisman was working the high line, while Schultz was charging hard down low. They swapped the runner-up spot several times until Schultz cleared the heat race winner and mounted a charge on Koch’s lead. With a lap to go, Schultz gave Koch a scare, but fell just a little short in denying Koch the win. Chrisman held onto third place. Shane Stout of North Platte finished in fourth place, followed by both heat race winners, Mikey Dancer of North Platte and Culbertson’s Bryan Hagan. Kent Lower of North Platte won the night’s Cash Dash.

The IMCA Hobby Stock drivers were racing so hard, it was surprising the class had only two minor caution periods. The heat race winners were key players, as Thomas Lower and Jason Koch of Cambridge swapped the lead on lap six. With one lap to go, Lower made a hard charge to sneak under Koch to regain the lead. On the next lap, Koch tried a little too hard in recovering the top spot, spun, and fell out of contention. Lower went on to win his first ever Hobby Stock A Feature. Brett Hagan of Gibbon found his way in the second spot at the finish. John Huffman of McCook rounded out the top three with the third #3 car, as Lower’s number is 3T and Hagan drives the 3H car. Huffman drives the plain #3. Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colo., finished in fourth place, while Austin Davis of Benkelman finished in fifth place.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature win was decided after a restart on lap five when Trent Hansen flew by Toph Harmon of Holbrook. Harmon’s car broke, and his night was ended. Hansen drove out to a big lead when the caution flag flew again with four laps to go. That allowed Rick Putnam of Gothenburg to align right behind Hansen. Hansen was able to keep distance between he and the Gothenburg driver and picked up the win. Putnam was followed at the finish line by Meddie Cote of Cozad, Arden Myers of McCook, and Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg. Hansen, Myers, and Kennicutt were also the class heat race winners. Josh Sabin of North Platte won the Mini-Sprint B Feature.

Lincoln County Raceway will take next Saturday off, but will be back for a special night of racing on Tuesday, June 13, beginning at 7 PM CDT. The night will be called “Run for The Money,” and the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, and IMCA Hobby Stocks will be running for significantly more money.
