Murray Wins BST Special at McCook Speedway
by: Darin Racek

McCOOK, NE. (Sept. 30, 2006) - Chamber-of-Commerce weather welcomed the BST Modified Series of Colorado to McCook Speedway on September 30. Despite a Nebraska football game on television, sixty cars from three states came to do battle for the added prize money in three classes. David Murray of Oberlin, Kan., Dave Plowman of Gretna, and Larry Pollmann of McCook didn’t need any overtime to take their A Feature wins.

Twenty-five cars started the BST Modified A Feature, the most cars that have ever started a feature on the small 3/8-mile track. Dominic Ursetta of Arvada, Colo., was on the pole as a result of passing David Murray, Jr. on the last lap of the pole dash. Murray started along the side of him for the twenty-five lap event after amassing the most passing points in the heat races. Ursetta took off with the lead on the opening lap, but Murray stayed close and crossed the scoring line on lap two first. On that lap, the first of five cautin periods occurred after Brice Riley of Indianola was turned sideways in front of a pack of cars. A pileup ensued, but no one was hurt. Murray and Ursetta stayed at the front of the field, and joined by many different faces near the front. Eddie Belec, Jr. of Arvada, Colo., joined his two fellow heat race winners up front for a while, but lost contact with them near the end of the event.

Jay Schilling of McCook and Bill Brack of Mead, Colo., came from eleventh and fifteenth, respectively, to join the fun at the front. Brack was wowing everyone on the high line while Schilling was hugging the bottom.

A debris caution with five laps to go bunched the field one more time.

When the green came out, Murray scooted away en route to the $1,000.00 payday. Ursetta was left to battle the others, and was successful in finishing in second place. Schilling finished thrilling the local crowd by beating Brack to the line for third place. Bill’s son Will Brack of Mead, Colo., took home fifth place. The B Feature was won by Ronnie Wallace of North Platte, while Scott Blessing of Kearney took the other BST Modified heat race win.

The question, “Who was going to win the Stock Car A Feature?” was in doubt until the very end. The race barely got going when leader Lloyd Meeske of Champion lost control in corner two, clipping fellow heat winner Jason Davis of Norton, Kan. Davis’s car went sideways, caught the dirt burm, and barrel rolled several times. Jason got out of his car with a little assistance from the Western Red Willow County Fire Department and walked away. Shane Stout of North Platte claimed the lead on the restart with hopes of a healthy payday, closely followed by Dave Plowman, Stew Holmes of North Platte, and Brett Smith of Fort Morgan, Colo. Plowman and heat winner Stout wend side-by-side for a few laps until Plowman finally took the lead on lap nine. Lurking in the pack was Zach Schultz of North Platte, who started back in row five. He caught Plowman with about five laps to go. On lap seventeen, Plowman bobbled in corner two, opening the door for Schultz to take the lead. However, on the last lap, Schultz did the same thing, and Dave went through the same doorway to sneak by Schultz and closed the door behind him on the way to the finish line. Schultz settled for second place, ahead of Stout. Smith took home fourth place, while Bob Chalupa of McCook got by Holmes on the final lap to earn fifth place.

A dozen Classic Modifieds took to the track for their fifteen lap A Feature with heat race winners Jay Alberts of McCook and Karl Wickizer of Palisade on the front row. Alberts took off at the start, followed by Wickizer and Larry Pollmann. Those three pulled away. Pollmann worked his way around Wickizer, then moved around Alberts after his car wobbled.

The race had only one caution after the car of Mike Brenning of Culbertson shelled the drive shaft. When the race resumed, Pollmann picked up where he left off and zoomed off with victory. Wickizer got by Alberts for second place. Max Pollmann of Trenton came on late to take fourth place from Matt Fletcher of North Platte, who made his first appearance of the year.
