Murray Wins Bonus Money at McCook Speedway
By Darin Racek

McCOOK, NEBRASKA (June 8) - The track crew at McCook Speedway worked on the holes that were plaguing the track in previous races for the June 8 show. The track was smooth, but it became dry slick, and the drivers had to adjust their styles. David Murray, Jr. and Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan., Jason Davis of Norton, Kan., Justin Wagner of Culbertson, and Max Pollmann of Trenton made the best adjustments to their cars and styled their way to A Feature victories.

It was a special night for the IMCA Modifieds, as extra money was added to give the winner of the A Feature $500 to win. The field was aligned by the draw, with Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas on the pole and Chad Dolan of Gibbon on the outside of the front row. Tubbs took the lead on the start, but lost it to Dolan, who used the outside line to get by him on lap three. Dolan tried to stretch out a lead, but a couple of cautions in the next few laps kept the field close. Heat race winners Jay Steffens of North Platte and David Murray found their way to second place and began to do battle. Once Murray was clear, he tracked down Dolan, who was still using a higher line. Murray stuck his car to the bottom, and on lap 14, made the final lead pass for the night. Steffens, who also won the $100 Cash Dash, caught Dolan in the waning laps and moved into second place with one lap to go, but Dolan got back by on the last lap for an exciting second place finish. Following Steffens was John Fabrizius of Colby, Kansas and Robby Haines of Benkelman. The other IMCA Modified heat winner was Brandon Hagan of Culbertson.

If there is a word that closely describes the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, “pandemonium” would be it. Four times, the caution flag waved in the first two laps. Heat winner Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson inherited the lead after previous leader Brandon Anderson of McCook looped his car. Wickizer maintained the lead until a lap nine restart found him starting with a flat tire. By the time he got to the pits, he had two flats. Rookie Larry Pollmann of McCook inherited the lead, challenged by Jason Davis and North Platte driver Todd Chrisman. With a handful of laps to go, Pollmann spun, handing Davis the lead. He held his line, and held off Chrisman for his first McCook Speedway feature win of the year. Dave Plowman of Gretna started in the back, stayed out of all of the trouble, and went home with a clean race car and a third place finish. Caleb Peters of Oberlin, Kansas and Lloyd Meeske of Champion rounded out the top five. Zach Schultz of North Platte and John Huffman of McCook earned the other two Stock Car heat race victories.

John’s dad Jim Huffman got the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature. As in the Stock Car Feature, cautions kept the field close. Justin Wagner, a victim of an early race caution, used the cautions and the dry slick track to his advantage and worked his way back through the field. With three laps to go, Wagner found the way by Jim Huffman and took off with the win. Huffman held onto second place. The battle for third was exciting at the end, and heat race winner Austin Davis of Benkelman just nipped Ogallala’s Shane Klockman at the line for the spot. Jason Koch of Cambridge rounded out the top five. Michael Brunswig of Benkelman was the winner of the other IMCA Hobby Stock Heat race.

Max Pollmann wasted no time in the caution-free Classic Modified main event. The heat race victor started in row two and had made his final pass by corner three of the opening lap. Devin Allen of Culbertson started a little bit further back an had to work hard to find his way to second place. Fellow Culbertson driver Mike Brenning made a late pass on McCook’s Donny Sailors to finish in third. Loren Pollmann of Trenton was the last driver to get his car into the top five.

After an opening lap tangle, the Mini-Trucks ran all ten laps without another wave of the yellow flag. Royal Fisher showed he had the fastest truck for the night, taking first the heat race win, then getting his second win of the night when it counted financially, the A Feature. Alex Silos of North Platte started in the back of the field after the opening lap trouble, drove to second place, and did give Royal a scare. However, a bobble in corner two with two laps to go was enough to get him out of contention for the win, but not enough to knock him from second place. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas found his way to third place come the end of the race. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson finished in fourth, and Mike Schrader of Benkelman, in his first night out, rounded out the top five. All starters in the Mini-Truck A Feature finished, and on the lead lap.

The next race in Southwest Nebraska will be at Culbertson Speedway on Friday, June 15, beginning at 8 PM Central Time. The next event at McCook Speedway will be “Thunder On The Plains” on June 22 and 23. On Friday night, all five classes will run, with extra money in the purse of the Mini-Trucks and Classic Modifieds. The races will start at 8 PM, CDT. June 23 will have a complete show as well beginning at 7 PM, CDT. The IMCA Stock Cars will be running for $500 to win the A Feature. The three IMCA classes will run Cash Dashes, and all heat race winners for the night will receive $50.
