Drivers From Three States Go For Sunday Drive at McCook Speedway
By Darin Racek

McCOOK, NE (Aug 12) - McCook Speedway was granted permission to run on Sunday, August 12, to make up for the rained out races on July 13. It was also Fan Appreciation Night, also moved over from the July 13 show. One surprise for the fans was a visit from the Colorado Mod Lite series. Matt Fabrizius of WaKeeney, Kan., Dave Plowman of Gretna, Michael Brunswig of Benkelman, Brad Bayne of Ault, Colo., Devin Allen of Culbertson, and Cindy Murray of Oberlin, Kan. Appreciated the good racing surface on Sunday night, and were the drivers to take the A Feature wins.

Matt Fabrizius started in fourth place for the IMCA Modified A Feature, but fell back early on. He was one of the first drivers who chose to move his line up the track, and it worked to his advantage. Brice Riley of Indianola had the lead from the start and showed the field the way down low for the first fourteen laps. On lap fifteen, Fabrizius drove by Riley on the outside and pulled away for the win. Riley maintained second place at the finish. Caleb Peters of Oberlin, Kan. remained near the front of the field all night and finished in third. Jay Schilling of McCook took fourth, while John Fabrizius of Colby, Kan. rounded out the top five. Riley, Matt Fabrizius, and Don Hagan, Jr. of Culbertson took the three IMCA Modified wins.

Dave Plowman was another driver who made a long pull to McCook and made it worth his while. Plowman plowed the field when he won the heat race. He found his way to the lead on lap three and never looked back. Todd Chrisman of North Platte survived going off of the track near corner three on lap four to finish in second place. Larry Pollmann held off fellow hometown rookie John Huffman at bay for the third spot. Lloyd Meeske of Champion took fifth place. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood was the other heat race winner for the class.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature went fifteen laps without a caution period. Heat winner Richard Boon had his eyes set on doubling up on wins Sunday, and he had the top spot for most of the race. Michael Brunswig battled to get to get to second place, then tracked down Boon. With two laps to go, Brunswig made the final pass for the lead. Shane Klockman of Ogallala, Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, and Justin Wagner of Culbertson followed behind. The other IMCA Hobby Stock heat was won by Cambridge’s Aaron Koch.

The Colorado Mod Lites certainly gave everyone an exciting race. Former IMCA Modified driver Bryan Herrick of Curtis jumped to the quick lead, but faded after Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo. found a way by. Bayne moved away from the field for a few laps, but was soon joined out front by heat winner Barry Richards of Oberlin, Kan., Brad Bayne, and Tracy Bayne of Fort Collins, Colo. With two laps to go, Richards went to the low side of Travis, while Brad continue to ride the high line. Richards and Brad Bayne got by Travis, but Richards spun coming out of corner two, collected Travis Bayne and ended the Colorado driver’s night. Richards went to the back and Brad Bayne had the lead on the restart. Brad Bayne kept his distance from the rest of the field for the last two laps. Richards passed everyone else to get back to second place, ahead of Tracy Bayne, Steve Beckham of Fort Collins, Colo., and Herrick.

Donny Sailors of McCook and Devin Allen seem to be two of the more hard luck drivers in the Classic Modified class, but they were the ones out front for the night. Sailors won the heat race and then led the first nine laps of the ten lap A Feature. Allen followed suit of other drivers who found the high line a good line (actually, Devin was the first driver in the features to expose that fact) and got by Sailors as they went into corner one of the last lap to end up with the A Feature trophy. Sailors still earned second place money. Rick Touslee of Oberlin, Kan., Max Pollmann of Trenton, and Larry Ayers of Oberlin, Kan. were the other top five finishers.

Cindy Murray shares Mini Truck duties with her sister Sarah, but took advantage of her opportunity on Sunday night to pace the A Feature from the completion of the first lap to the last lap. The race was stopped once after the truck of fellow Oberlin, Kan. driver Royal Fisher took a funny bounce in corner three, then rolled over on it’s top. Fisher was not injured. When racing resumed, it was business as usual for Murray, taking her fourth McCook Speedway win of the year. Alex Silos of North Platte finished in second place. Jake Olmstead of Overton was third. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson and Robin Runge of Palisade finished in fourth and fifth places. The Mini Truck heat was won by Dale Heyen of Oberlin, Kan.

It will be a quick turnaround for McCook Speedway this week, as the crew will have to things ready for the next night of racing on Friday, August 17. The gates will open at 6 PM, and the races start at 8 PM, Central Time.
