Car Nationals August 24
by Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, NE (Aug 15) - Sprint Cars will return to North Platte on Friday,
August 24, as Lincoln County Raceway will present the 2nd Annual River Valley
Sprint Car Nationals. The show will feature the National Championship Racing
Association and American Sprint Car Series (Mountain Region) 360 Sprint Cars.
The winner of the night's A Feature will bank $2,000, and any driver that starts
the A Feature will be assured $350. Last year's August show was the first time
full-size Sprint cars had turned laps around the 3/8-mile track in many years,
and they put on a great show. They came back this year on May 26, in which 30
cars checked in. Both races were won by Cimarron, Kan. driver Gary Lee Maier.
Unsanctioned Modifieds will run that night on an invitational basis, as well as
the Mini-Sprints. The gates will open that night at 5 PM, with the racing
starting at 7 PM, CDT. Tickets will be $12.00 for adults, $6.00 for children 6 -
12, and free for children under 6.
Going into the month of August, Gary Lee Maier led the NCRA points, winning four
of the ten shows so far this year. Mike Peters of Wichita, Kan. sits second in
points, helped by seven top five finishes. Lincoln's Don Droud, Jr. has two wins
and is third in points, with J. D. Johnson of Goddard, Kan. and Stu Snyder of
Waverly rounding out the top five. The NCRA 360 Sprint Cars will visit Mid-NEBRaska
Speedway in Doniphan on August 23rd before visiting the 3/8-mile track of
Lincoln County Raceway.
The ASCS points were led by C. J. Johnson of Quinter, Kan. at the end of July.
Johnson had one win and seven top fives in thirteen events. Keith Rauch of
Thronton, Colo, and Patrick Bourke of Edwards, Colo. are close behind him in
second and third points. Centennial, Colo. driver Nick Haygood and Chad Corken
of Highlands Ranch, Colo. round out the ASCS Rocky Mountain top five. That
series will be in Hayden, Colo. and Rock Springs, Wyo. the on the weekend of
August 17th and 18th before they come to face the NCRA in North Platte.
