Herbst, Huffman, Davis, Myers Close Season with Wins
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE (Aug 25) - It was the final night of racing for the 2007 season for
Lincoln County Raceway, and the final night for drivers to improve in the point
standings and perhaps in their win totals. While the points have not been
officially tallied, the races are in the books, with Jeremy Herbst of North
Platte, John Huffman of McCook and Arden Myers of McCook, and Austin Davis of
Benkelman officially declared the final winners of the season. Jenny Caudillo of
North Platte was also a winner during the night, as she was able to take home
the Erickson’s Best Seat in The House La-Z-Boy recliner.
With the top three in IMCA Modified points having bad nights (David Murray of
Oberlin, Kan., Ronnie Wallace and Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte), it
appeared there might be a first time winner in the A Feature. Jeremy Herbst and
Ogallala’s Cole Hodges found themselves in the top two spots early in the race.
The race bogged down on lap eight, as three caution periods slowed down the
event. Fortunately, the remainder of the race went unabated. Hodges made the
pass on Herbst during one of the cautions, but with no complete laps, the cars
were forced to realign with Herbst at the front. Herbst remembered that, changed
lines when the race resumed, and drove on for his first ever win. Hodges earned
his best ever second place finish. Robby Haines of Benkelman, Dan Carl of North
Platte, and Jay Steffens of North Platte were the next three finishers. Herbst,
Haines, and Murray were the heat race winners. Brad Turner of North Platte
earned the B Feature win.
John Huffman wasted little time in getting to the lead for the IMCA Stock Car A
Feature. In weeks past, it seemed as though once he got to the front, he had
mechanical issues. On this night, however, he had no problems up front, and went
home with the winner’s check. A claim was made on his engine, but in further
inspection of the rules, the driver doing the claim was a lap down and not
eligible to make a claim, meaning Huffman kept his motor. Mikey Dancer of North
Platte came home in second place. Cash dash winner Travis Tilford continued his
good night by crossing the finish line in third, with Kent Lower and Brad Kohler
of North Platte having good night of their own and gaining top five finishes.
Lloyd Meeske of Champion was the B Feature winner. The IMCA Stock Car heat races
were won by Maywood driver Casey Werkmeister and North Platte racers Zach
Schultz and Buddy Brown.
Austin Davis earned his second A Feature win in as many weeks in the IMCA Hobby
Stock division. Davis got by fellow Benkelman driver Michael Brunswig on lap
eight. Brunswig made one more shot at the lead with two laps to go, but faded
back to fifth place by the finish. Second place went to Michael Woodhead of
Holyoke, Colo. Miles White of North Platte and Shane Klockman of Ogallala
finished in third and fourth places. The top two drivers were also the two heat
winners.
The Mini Sprint A Feature was peaceful out front for Arden Myers, who earned his
first Lincoln County Raceway win of the year. John Webster of North Platte came
across the line in second place. Jeremy Herbst fixed whatever caused his car to
stall during the race and got as far as third place by the end of the race. Josh
Sabin of North Platte, the heat winner, finished in fourth place, with J. R. Way
of Lexington close behind.
Lincoln County Raceway thanks the fans , sponsors, and drivers who helped make
the 2007 season work. A banquet will be held later in the year for the top
drivers. Keep checking www.lincolncountyspeedway.com for information.
