Big Crowd Watches Opening Night at Lincoln County Raceway

By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE (May 17) - The much anticipated opening night finally arrived at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte May 17. Cars from four states were in the pits to put on a show for the big crowd in the grandstand. Ronnie Wallace of McCook, Zach Schultz and Cory Kelley of North Platte, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Scott Naggatz of Carter Lake, Iowa were the five drivers who were able to take the big A Feature wins for their respective classes.

During the first few laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature, it looked as though all eighteen starters wanted to win the race on the opening lap. Jay Steffens of North Platte was out in front of the action early, but a couple of cautions kept everyone close. Ronnie Wallace eventually worked his way into second place, keeping close tabs on Steffens out front, and waiting for any opportunity to advance. Around the half way point, Steffens pushed going through corners three and four, opening the door for Wallace to sneak underneath and take the lead. Even with two cautions during the last two laps, no one was able to deny Wallace his 120th career IMCA Modified win. Steffens held off North Platte racer Jim Mlady for second place. The top five was rounded out by Dan Carl of North Platte and John Huffman of McCook. The B Feature was won by Charley Brown of Maxwell. The three heat races were won by Wallace, Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, and John Huffman of McCook.

Charley Brown also drove an IMCA Stock Car for the night, and paced much of that class’s main event. The raced was slowed by only one caution after a hub broke on Shane Stout’s start, making it unable for the North Platte driver to get back to the pits. Zach Schultz began looking for ways around Brown in the second half of the race, and with three laps to go, made the winning pass. Brown remained in second place, ahead of Mikey Dancer, Travis Tilford, and B Feature winner Todd Chrisman, all of North Platte. Charley Brown, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood were also IMCA Stock Car heat race winners.

Austin Davis doubled his pleasure in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. After winning the heat race, the Benkelman driver started in row two of the main event. He quickly jumped out to a lead, and by the end of the race, had a straightaway advantage on second place finisher Corey Cruzan of Maxwell. Miles White of North Platte finished in third place. North Platte drivers Rick Eller and Dan Morash rounded out the top five.

The Mini-Sprints were introduced to a new track for them. The new track has been stretched out to ¼ mile, and uses corners three and four of the big track. Corey Kelly seemed to enjoy the new layout, as he whipped the field in both the heat race and A Feature. Arden Myers of North Platte finished in second place.

 J. R. Way of Lexington made it in time for races after watching his daughter Laura graduate college in Hays, Ks. earlier in the afternoon , and finished in third place. John Webster of North Platte and Tony Linner of Kearney finished in fourth and fifth places.

An additional class was added for the night. The Colorado Mod Lite Association and Outlaw Vintage Lites of Eastern Nebraska merged at Lincoln County Raceway for a twenty car field. Scott Naggatz earned a victory for the eastern series, as he took the win in the sixteen car A Feature. Brad Bayne of Ault, Colo. and Stephen Beckham of Fort Collins, Colo. were the top drivers from the west, as they completed the feature in second and third places. Taylor Pollock of Prague took home fourth place, and Duane Bayne of Nunn, Colo. finished in fifth place. The Mod Lite heat races were won by Naggatz, Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo., and Bryan Herrick of Curtis.

After taking a week off, Lincoln County Raceway will be back in business on Saturday night, May 31. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM, Central Time. Although it was not announced, there will be racing on June 7th at Lincoln County Raceway, to make up for the May 10 rainout.
