Boston, Wilhelm, Wulf and Moyer win Givin’ Back Night at Eagle Raceway
By Greg Soukup

EAGLE, NE (June 21) - The threat of impending weather may have lessened the amount of fans who attended “Givin’ Back” night presented by Isles Pub & Pizza. The weather missed the track, but the overcast skies helped the track remain very tacky and extremely fast.

The heats and B Features were again run without major incidents.

In the first Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compact A feature, Eric Kline was first back to the start/finish line in his #39. He was followed by Jason Danley’s 14 and #29 of Matt Moyer. On the third lap Danley lost his right front tire, sending him to the pits. Moyer had fallen back to forth, allowing both the 21T of Brandon Thornton and the #45 of Jack Prall IV around him. On the restart, Prall IV lost the front bumper from his racer, sending him to the rear of the field. The running order then was Kline, Thornton, Moyer and the #49 of Nick Semmerfield. On the very next lap Chris LaChapelle moved around Semmerfield to take over the fourth position. The order remained the same until with 10 laps left Moyer moved past Thornton into second. With 9 to go, Jack Prall III moved up to the fourth spot and three laps later he also passed Thornton to take third. On the next circuit Moyer took over the lead from Kline and held it to the finish.

When asked about his racing career, Moyer stated “I only ran the 1 Enduro here last year, and then haven’t missed a race yet this year. I’ve been coming to Eagle Raceway since I was a kid as a spectator and always dreamed of racing and winning here. “I want to thank all of the fans for making this one of the very best tracks anywhere in the country. Eagle is truly America’s Home Track. Thanks to the Eagle staff and the safety crew too, because they all do a fantastic job” he continued. Moyer finished by saying “I need to give a big thanks to my mom, and a bigger one to my wife and kids for putting up with so much”. Moyer’s sponsors include Kinnersley Grading, General Siding and Hemmer Towing.

The second Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compact feature saw the #4 of David Tadlock roll over in turn #3 after the racers went 4 wide down the back stretch. Tadlock was not seriously hurt. Mike Rice snagged the point in his #24 with Dan Rhiley’s #2 in second, the 33 of Jeremy Noonan in third and Elliot Halvorsen’s #22 in fourth. The order remained the same until Derek Dreamer moved his #26 past Halvorsen for fourth, and followed that by passing Noonan for third on the next lap. Halvorsen also passed Noonan the same lap to move back up to fourth. At the checkered flag it was Rice, Rhiley, Dreamer and Halvorsen.

“This is my second A Feature win, and my second year of racing” Rice said. “The track was really fast, but a little bumpy in spots. I was thrilled to be able to win, coming from fourth to start the night as fast as the track was” he stated. “I need to thank my dad and Greg Winningham first of all, and of course all of my sponsors” he finished. Rice’s sponsors include M & M Construction, Big Dan’s Auto Body & Paint, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Long John Silvers, Low Budget Custom Chassis and Graphics, The Naked Canvas Body Art & Studio, Pro Powerwashing, Fleishman Farms, The Car Wash and Auggie’s Performance Shop.

Next up were the Valentino’s Hobby Stocks. Rick Bradley took the lead in the #28B followed by the M70 of Rick Munson, the 94 of Mike Hansen and Rob Brown #42. Brown was passed on the second lap by Nick Beckman in the 22. Beckman also got around Hansen for second on the next lap. Also on the third circuit Kevin Anderson advanced his #22K all the way to the third spot with Jerry Keaton’s 3K following him into fourth. It took Beckman until there were only 8 laps remaining to grab the lead. Anderson then advanced to second on the next lap, but there was a yellow flag for debris on the track sending him back to third. Two-time Hobby Stock Champion Justin Wulf was the man on the move however, as he advanced steadily through the pack to move into second as the laps ran down. Beckman held him off until the last lap. Beckman blew a tire in turn two, allowing Wulf to pass him and come home the victor.

“The high side of the track was really good tonight, so I tried to stay up there. Actually, I got lucky. When Beckman popped that tire on the last lap I just went hard on the high side for the win” Wulf stated “I want to thank my pit crew first of all. Tim and Todd Wulf, Dave Volnek, Brian Crone and Joe Spencer do a great job on the car every week” he continued. “I also want to give the fans a big thanks for supporting us and Eagle Raceway” he finished. Wulf’s sponsors include Wulf & Sons Farms, Sidewinder Chassis, Ken’s Smoke House, Renegade Seating, J & J Grading and Volnek Welding.

Next was the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified A Main. After passing the flag stand on the first lap there was a 3-car pileup at the entrance to the pits in turn #1. Rik Gropp’s V45, Chad Anderson’s 8C and Ed “Doc” Raines’ 11AA were involved. This brought about a complete restart. Tom Lenz was first back to the flag stand in his #44 with Nathan Landauer’s #11N in second and the #7 of Bob Ruisinger in third. Landauer wasted little time, passing Lenz for the lead on lap #3 with Ruisinger, Scott Bivens’ S56 and the 3W of Stacey Wilhelm also moving around Lenz who slowed dramatically. Two laps later Wilhelm passed Bivens and Ruisinger to grab the second position. About that time, Wilhelm’s engine began to smoke and the condition worsened as the race progressed. This didn’t slow Wilhelm however, as he overtook Landauer with the laps running down. On the same lap Chevy Hadan moved up to fourth and overtook third position on the subsequent circuit. From there to the finish there were two heavily contested battles; Wilhelm and Hadan fought tooth and nail for the top 2 spot with Justin Jurgens’ 22J and the #95 Dylan Smith contesting third and fourth. Wilhelm’s motor expired shortly after coming home first, causing him to be pushed onto the scales and into the waiting area after the race.

“My engine oil light came on with about 5 laps left in the race, so I started slowing down just wanting to finish the race” Wilhelm said.

The Budweiser 360 Championship Sprint A Main began with a scary crash by Brad Krutz in the #91 getting sideways coming out of turn #4 and then flipping numerous times past the flag stand. Also suffering damage in the incident were the 96KX of Adam Gullion, the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher and the #3 of Jeff Griffis. Gullion’s crew attempted to make repairs, but both he and Griffis were out of the race. Grossenbacher did return to the track however. On the restart Roger Sluka grabbed the lead in his X29 followed by Nick Bryan in the 6, Make Pace in the 31 and the #82 of Jason Danley. Bryan got around Sluka on lap #2 and Pace also passed Sluka the next lap for third. On lap 4 Sluka went over the cushion in turn #1 and making hard contact with the outside wall, resulting in him flipping his sprint. At that point it was Bryan, Pace, Danley and the 23 of Terry Holliman. After the restart Pace passed Bryan to take the point and Holliman moved around Danley to grab third. A yellow flag flew on the next lap when Tige Jensen spun his #71 into the front stretch infield. On the first lap after the race began again 2-time defending sprint champion Mike Boston moved up to fourth. He moved into third on the next lap, only to lose the position back to Holliman the next time around. With 14 laps remaining Jay Russell came to a halt high in turn #4 after making contact with the wall. At the same time Grossenbacher spun his sprinter in turns 1 & 2. Boston took over second position on the restart, only to have to go back after Grossenbacher flipped his racer in turn #1. With 11 laps left Bryan made contact with the wall in turn #2, sending him to the pits. One lap after the restart Boston got around Pace to grab the lead, but gave the spot back when Pace moved under him 2 laps later. On the white flag lap Boston got back into the lead when Pace had trouble negotiating lapped traffic. Boston came home first with Pace, Holliman and the #14 of Josh Riggins behind.

“I want to tell you that Mark ran an awesome race. The cars were so close as far as being fast. It was Mark’s race to win or lose, and unfortunately his line was on the bottom and that was where the lapped traffic was. I made a mistake after I got the lead, and Mark took advantage. Of course, I wasn’t going to settle for second so I just kept hitting the cushion. The track was really fast on top, but the bottom was really good too. I was just in the right place at the right time” Mike said. Boston’s sponsors include Select Auto Body, Trade Center Automotive, Eckley Racing Engines and Moock Trucking.
