Turner Turns First Feature Triumph at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, NE (June 28) - The fans of Lincoln County Raceway was blessed with a pleasant night and a fast night of racing on June 28, as the races were completed in just a little over three hours. Limited caution periods in most of the features helped make the night flow fast. Aaron Koch of Cambridge and North Platte racers Brad Turner, Mikey Dancer, and John Webster had the fuel flowing quickly through their cars, powering them to A Feature wins.

A strange situation happened in both the B Features and A Features of the IMCA Modified class. Caution periods occurred on the last lap of each race. When the caution comes out on the last lap, the race is called complete. The official scoring lineup of the last previous lap is used as the official finish, with the person responsible for the caution moved to the back of the field in the scoring. The IMCA Modified A Feature was still an interesting race with several lead changes.

Heat race winner Bob Aspenleiter of North Platte, who hadn’t won a Modifed A Feature since 1999, paced the first half of the twenty lap race. On lap ten, sophomore Modified driver Cole Hodges of Ogallala made a bold move in corner two and slid to the front spot. A winner at other tracks, it looked as though Hodges was going to get his first Lincoln County Raceway feature win, as he pulled away from the field. However, three laps later, his motor gave up. Heat winner Brad Turner inherited the lead, followed closely by Maxwell driver Charley Brown. The two began to race side-by-side, and Brown actually took the lead on lap eighteen. When they came around for lap nineteen, Turner had the advantage at the scoring stripe by a bumper. The caution then came out, meaning the race was over, and Turner had won by a nose. Brad had been close to an A Feature win in his many year of racing, even having a big lead at the end of the race once, only to have a caution come out that set up a two lap shootout and losing a hard battle at the end, so he felt some vindication and joy. Brown was markedly dejected with his second place finish. B Feature winner Ronnie Wallace of McCook finished in third place. Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook and heat winner Mike Saathoff of North Platte rounded out the top five.

Only one caution slowed the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, and all eighteen cars finished the race on the lead lap. There appeared to be an opportunity for another first time winner in that event. Dan Eller of North Platte jumped out to the lead, followed by Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg. Whiting passed the heat race winner on lap five and had clear sailing ahead of him. After the caution period on lap six, Mikey Dancer’s car came alive, and he moved from fifth place to the lead by lap ten. As he pulled away for a big win, an exciting race involving six cars for second place kept the excitement level high. Whiting was able to hold everyone off for second place, but failed the post race inspection. Kent Lower of North Platte had a great night become better, credited with a second place finish. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood continued the “B- Feature winner finishing third place in the A” trend, ahead of Todd Chrisman and Travis Tilford of North Platte. Dancer and Tilford were the other two IMCA Stock Car heat race winners.

Aaron Koch swept the IMCA Hobby Stock events he was in. After taking his heat race and a cash dash win, Koch started on row three of the A Feature. Koch then battled leader Jack Sherman of Kearney early in the race, taking the lap on lap three. Sherman regained the lead on lap four, and the two battled back and forth until Koch was able to clear Sherman on lap seven. Sherman held on for second place. Heat winner Austin Davis of Benkelman finished not too far behind for third. Dan Morash of North Platte and Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado rounded out the top five.

John Webster paced most of the Mini-Sprint A Feature. Near the end of the race, heat winner Austin Farley of Brighton, Colorado caught up to Webster and applied the heavy pressure. Webster held his line, held down the throttle a little harder, and kept out in front of Farley for his first feature win of the year. Eric Sargent and Cory Kelley of North Platte were the third and fourth place finishers. Andy Farley of Brighton, Colorado took fifth place.

The next night of racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, July 12, beginning at 7 PM. The American Sprint Car Series, Rocky Mountain region 360 Sprint Cars, will be in town to put on a show. Also scheduled for the night will be the IMCA Modifieds, Mini-Sprints, and Mod Lites. Grandstand admission on July 12 will be $12.00 for adults, $6.00 for children 6 - 12, and free for children under 6.
