Davis Wins NAPA Money at Culbertson Speedway
By Darin Racek

CULBERTSON, NE (July 3) - The weather was ideal at Culbertson Speedway on July 3. It was not too hot, and the wind was blowing in an amicable direction for the fans. John Huffman and Mitch Hamilton of McCook, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Alex Pollmann of Trenton were in amicable moods after the races, as they were the A Feature winners for the night.

John Huffman started on the front row of the IMCA Modified A Feature, but handed the lead over to Brandon Hagan of McCook. While trying to regain the lead the lead, Huffman spun, creating a caution period. Fortunately for him, it was not the last one, and on the twelfth lap, worked his way back to the front spot. After regaining the lead, Huffman would not relinquish it. Hagan, who was driving his dad Don’s car that night, finished in second place. John Fabrizius of Colby, Kansas took third, ahead of Wray Colorado drivers James Krehmeyer and Jim Gronewold. Hagan was the heat race winner.

The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was a spirited battle, to say the least. Heat race winner Bob Chalupa of McCook gained the early lead of the race. He had a slight lead over the next five cars, who battled for position many laps. The top groove began to come in, so Casey Werkmeister drove his car up top to get through the field and into second place. A caution with two laps to go aligned him on the rear bumper of Chalupa. On the restart, the two got together in corner two, Werkmeister slapped the wall, then came down into the car of Larry Pollmann of McCook, causing both drivers to go for the wild ride. The yellow came out again, and the fault was put on Chalupa, allowing Werkmeister to inherit the lead and Pollmann second place. Werkmeister would hold on for the win, ahead of Pollmann, Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson, John Huffman, and Lloyd Meeske of Champion.

It was a NAPA Night at The Races for the IMCA Hobby Stock class. NAPA put extra money into the pot for the IMCA Hobby Stocks, which nearly tripled the winner’s prize on a normal night. Bonus money was added throughout the purse for the other drivers as well. Once Austin Davis got out in front of the field, he would not be challenged for the spot in the caution-free event. Kelly Karnopp of Norton, Kansas finished in second place, ahead of heat winner Cody DeWester of McCook, Michael Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado, and John Groshans of Wray, Colorado.

The Classic Modified heat race was tough on the cars, as barely half the field finished the event, won by Trent Jollensten of McCook. After the race, Matt Matson of McCook lost a wheel and axle going into the pits. The assembly rolled into the wall of the pit concession stand trailer. Fortunately, no one was injured, but Matson could not get his car ready for the A Feature. The Classic Modified A Feature started off no better when on the opening lap, Billy Aeby of Imperial spun and Alex Pollmann and Loren Pollmann of Trenton wrecked to avoid the spin. Father Loren was unable to compete, but son Alex was able to continue. The other son, Max Pollmann, had no trouble once the race started, and pulled away from the field for a big win. Alex Pollmann and Billy Aeby put on a good battle for second place. Alex was able to get to the finish line first.

Many say that winning your second race is easier than winning your first race. Mitch Hamilton finally broke through the previous week at McCook Speedway for his first win. On this particular week at Culbertson Speedway, he again put himself in the feature win column, taking the lead on the second lap and cruising on for the win. Bud Wasson of Lebanon had to battle at the end of the race, but was able to finish ahead of Jake Sahm of McCook for second place. Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson finished in fourth place.

The next night or racing at Culbertson Speedway will be on Friday night, July 11. The gates open at 6 PM, and the racing will start at 8 PM, Central Time.
