McCook Drivers Come Up One Short of Sweeping Feature Wins at Culbertson Speedway
By Darin Racek

CULBERTSON, NE (July 11) - A hot day in Southwest Nebraska on July 11 became a decent night to watch at Culbertson Speedway after the sun went down and the breeze increased. McCook drivers nearly swept the five A Feature wins, as four of the races were won by current residents Larry Pollmann, Cody DeWester, Matt Matson, and Mitch Hamilton. Culbertson driver Bryan Hagan won the other main event, denying the sweep.

After having a rotor break and finding some bent valves in the engine the previous week, IMCA Modified driver Bryan Hagan was forced to run on of the older motors in the Hagan shop, one with over forty nights on it. The engine had plenty of go, and must have known the way around the track, because it aided Bryan to keep his distance out front and earn his first ever IMCA Modified A Feature win. John Huffman of McCook did manage to track Hagan down after falling from him by nearly half a straightaway, but the distance remained constant when he was a car length behind, forcing him to settle for second place. Heat race winners Ronnie Wallace of McCook and John Fabrizius of Colby, Kansas were the third and fourth place finishers.

Chuck Stryker of Eddyville, making his first appearance of the year at the track, finished in fifth place.

One of the, if not “the”, winningest Classic Modified driver, Larry Pollmann, has spent the last season-and-a-half in the IMCA Stock Car class winning a heat race here and there, but never a main event. After winning his heat race, Larry started on the front row of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature and jumped out to the lead. The lineup was jumbled quickly behind him after second place Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood bounced off the wall in corner two, collecting Bob Chalupa of North Platte. It would hand second place over to Lloyd Meeske of Champion, but he would be shortly overcome by Werkmeister’s brother Casey. Casey nearly took the lead when Pollmann’s car began to push in the even numbered corners. Pollmann was able to change his line and hold Werkmeister off when he made a run with two laps to go to finally get that elusive Stock Car win. Werkmeister and Meeske were followed at the line by Ritchie Wickizer of Culbertson and Travis Tilford of North Platte.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had its moments. Jason McIntyre of Colby, Kansas slapped the corner one wall before the half way points, but was able to limp his car into the pits. A lap later, the race was stopped after the engine in Josh Bopp’s car became a fireball. The fire was eventually put out, and the McCook driver got out of his car a little warmer, but far from cooked. McIntyre used the time to change a tire and come back out, but “Shrek” and his car again found the corner two wall, which finally ended his night. At the front of the field, heat race winner Cody DeWester had his car on cruise control, successfully handling any challenge. Benkelman drivers Austin Davis, Richard Boon, and Michael Brunswig swept the next three finishing spots. John Groshans of Wray, Colorado rounded out the top five.

Matt Matson was strong in the Classic Modified division, winning both his heat race and the A Feature. Billy Aeby of Imperial ran one of his stronger races, maintaining second place for most of the race. On the last lap, however, Max Pollmann of Trenton slipped on by for the position. Aeby took third, ahead of Max’s dad Loren Pollmann and Max’s brother Alex Pollmann, both of Trenton.

For the third straight weekend, Mitch Hamilton picked himself up a Mini-Truck A Feature victory. The heat race winner took the lead on lap three from Ron Murphy of North Platte and never looked back. Bud Wasson of Lebanon drove like a man half his age, as the 75 year-old driver got by Jake Sahm of McCook and Murphy to drive to a second place finish. Sahm finished in third place, beating Delbert Ridenour of Culbertson to the line for the spot. Murphy had some mechanical issues which dropped him back into fifth place.

The next race in Southwest Nebraska will be July 18 at McCook Speedway. The next race at Culbertson Speedway will be on Friday night, August 8, at 8 PM. The race will be during the Hitchcock County Fair, and it will be the final race of the season.
