Dover, Alcorn, Macku and Rhiley Win Kid’s Night at Eagle Raceway!
By Greg Soukup

EAGLE, NE (July 30) - Kid’s Night Bike Giveaway and Fan Appreciation Night, presented by McDonalds saw a near capacity crowd at “America’s Home Track” Eagle Raceway. Despite a hot afternoon the fans came out in such numbers that the line to enter the grounds was still ½ mile long when the racing began.

The only major incident during the heats was when Mark Schmidt made hard contact with the wall in turns 1 and 2 in his 9J sprinter. Schmidt’s team was unable to make repairs and that ended his evening.

The racing in both the heats and features was a fierce battle, with the cars running three wide throughout the evening.

At intermission, three semi trucks pulled into the infield and began unloading the bikes for the giveaway. A new record was set again this year, surpassing the 262 bikes handed out last year. This year saw 350 lucky children going home with a brand new bicycle. Bikes were donated by various drivers, race teams and individuals, but the main thanks goes to the Bryan Racing Team. Rhonda, Bernie and Nick Bryan spearhead the giveaway each year. And, due to their hard work, even more children were thrilled tonight with their efforts than any other year.

The first A Feature was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Dan Kros moved to the point in the #53 with the 1R of RJ Macku, Nick Beckman’s 22 and the 14 of Ron Novak close on his heels. Lap 3 saw Jerry Keaton’s 3K move around Novak into 4th. The next lap Kros rolled his racecar numerous times in turn #2. That same lap Justin Wulf’s #86 suffered a flat tire. He and the Beckman both went to the pits as Beckman suffered damaged to the nose of his racer. That put Macku in the lead with Keaton second, Novak in third and Lee Kracht’s 10K in fourth. On the restart, Shane Hiatt moved into the fourth position in his #21H when Kracht went to the infield. Kracht then went to the pits. Keaton also headed his racer into the pits with unknown problems and Wulf returned to the pits with damage to his right rear which caused it to rub on his tire. At that time the running order was Macku, Novak, Hiatt and the #92 of Don Hall Jr. With just 2 laps left in the contest Novak slowed, allowing Casey Moyer to advance his #38C to fourth. At the finish it was Macku, Hiatt, Hall Jr. and Moyer. A bit of confusion arose when Macku neglected to go to the tech area before returning to the pits. After consultation between the officials, it was decided that since he had returned to the tech area directly after going to the pits that he would retain the win.

“The last time I raced here, the tech area was still in the pits. So, it was an honest mistake; but the officials made the right call in letting me keep the win” Macku said. “This is only my third full year racing, and my third win. In fact, the last two have both been this year” he continued. He concluded his comments by saying “I want to thank the fans, especially the kids. If it wasn’t for the kids bringing out their parents, we wouldn’t be making new fans. I also need to thank my Dad, my girlfriend Stacy and all my sponsors”. Macku’s sponsors include ‘Handsome’ Chad Fegley & Pat Heng of The Shop Inc., Big Johnson Racing Chassis, Capitol Towing, Hillsworth Remodeling, B & B Lawn Service and Dean of Wollen Racing Engines.

Next up was the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified A Main. The first lap saw Mike Densberger’s #81, the 41 of Clint Hummer, Bob Ruisinger’s #7 and Steve Devitt’s 11X in the top four positions. A yellow flag flew on lap #2 when Phil Penney spun his #21V in turn 2. On the restart, Devitt moved around Ruisinger for third. He was followed the next lap by the 18S of Brent Bohmont who also overtook Ruisinger to grab fourth. Bohmont got past Devitt the next lap to move into third. The next lap the yellow flag was again thrown as Tracy Harr’s 21T looped in turns 1 and 2. That same lap Ruisinger made contact with the wall coming out of turn #4. He was unable to continue. With 7 laps down Chris Alcorn moved up into the third spot in his #3 with Ed “Doc” Raines following him to take the fourth position. The next time around Densberger slowed, dropping back to fourth and Raines took advantage and moved around Alcorn to grab second. The running order was Bohmont, Raines, Alcorn and the #95 of Dylan Smith. Shortly thereafter Doug Deterding slowed to a stop in turn #4 with tire problems. Alcorn used the restart to get back around Raines to retake second. That lap the #4 of “Chevy” Hadan moved past Smith to grab the fourth spot. The yellow flew again with 7 laps remaining when Harr pulled into the pits with a fire at the rear of his racer. When the green flag flew, Alcorn moved past Bohmont for the lead and Smith jumped all the way up to third. The next time around George Haney spun his 12X in turns 1 and 2, causing yet another caution. On the restart, Hadan got past Raines, but Raines retook fourth the next time around. At the checkered flag it was Alcorn, Bohmont, Smith and Raines.

“I think that the bike giveaway is a really great deal, both for the fans and for the track. Fan Appreciation Nights mean that everyone can come out and enjoy the races, despite the hard times that everyone is going through. Hopefully, tonight we had a bunch of new fans born” Alcorn said. “It was nice to see that the top four finishers all had some association with Mike Goecke” he continued. He finished by saying “The track was good tonight. It would have been better if it had widened out in turns 3 & 4 earlier, but by the end of the night there was a high and a low groove. And you can’t ask for much more than that”.

The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts were next to take to the track. The #63 of Mike Simpson came around with the lead with Larry Cronin’s #5, Jake Sells’ 21 and the 33 of Jeremy Noonan in hot pursuit. Noonan wasted no time and overtook Sells and Cronin for second on lap #2. The running order remained the same for the top 4 until with 11 laps left Dan Rhiley moved his #2 around Sells to grab the fourth spot. It took Rhiley 3 more laps to get around Cronin for third. The next time around Noonan moved into the lead with Rhiley following him around Simpson. Rhiley then got past Noonan for first on the next circuit, and Justin Busboom advanced to fourth. With only 4 laps remaining Cronin pulled to a stop on the front stretch, ending his night. With only 2 laps left Mike Rice advanced his #24 into fourth. At the finish it was Rhiley, Noonan, Simpson and Rice.

Rhiley said “I had a good run going but with 2 laps to go I came out of turn four, glanced at the flagman, looked back ahead of me and I was about 2 inches from the wall. And that started me worrying. I tend to do that when I’m leading. I start to hear the car making noises, and then I worry if it’s going to make it to the finish”. “The good news is that although I got rained out twice this week I still managed to make up 72 points on the national points leader with a win last night at Rising City. Shawn’s my competition right now for the national title. To be honest, he could just drop out right now and still get Rookie of the Year honors. But, he’s a racer. And he won’t stop racing, so I’ll just have to keep racing too” he concluded. Rhiley’s sponsors include 2 Men and a Shop, Ray’s Quality Towing, Max I Walker and R & M Roll Cages.

The last Feature Event of the night was for the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints. Jay Russell’s 76 was flagged for a bad start, moving him to the second row and putting the 7G of Mikey Gabelhouse on the pole. Adam Gullion took advantage on the restart, moving into the lead in his #96KX. Behind him were the 71 of Tige Jensen, Russell’s 76 and Gabelhouse’s 7G. The race was halted on lap 2 when the 99C of Nick Clifford experienced engine troubles and slowed to a stop. Mike Boston also took his #51 to the pits with apparent suspension difficulties. 2 laps later Mark Pace’s #31 slowed to a stop and he was forced to retire for the night. On the restart Gene Acklund moved his 14G around Gabelhouse to snare the fourth spot. The next lap three cars got together in turn 2. They were the #27 of Brad Wright, the 17 of Gage Dorr and X29 of Roger Sluka. Sluka and Dorr were able to restart, but Wright’s car was damaged too severely to continue. On lap #4 Acklund moved past both Russell and Jensen to take over 2nd. With 6 laps in the books Jack “The Gas Man” Dover moved into fourth. Two laps later Jensen retook the second spot from Acklund, unfortunately the yellow flag was brought out when Bobby Becker spun his 8B in turns 1 and 2. At that time it was Gullion, Acklund, Jensen and Dover in the top four positions. On the restart Jensen again passed Acklund, but he was overtaken the next lap by Dover who advanced to second. With 13 laps remaining, Jeff Griffis had advanced from near the rear of the field and moved into the fourth spot. Four laps later, with 10 laps left Dover moved past Gullion to grab the lead. There was another stoppage with 7 laps left when Russell made contact with the wall in turns 1 and 2. He was taken to the pits and could not return. That same lap Griffis was forced to take his sprinter into the pits with brake problems. The race was again restarted with Dover in the lead and Gullion, Jensen and the #82 of Jason Danley behind him. The final caution of the evening came when Dorr and Trevor Grossenbacher’s #35 got together in turn #2. On the restart Jensen managed to move past Gullion for second. At the checkered flag it was Dover, Jensen, Gullion and Danley.

“The car was really good all night. My dad and I argued back and forth all day over the set-up, but I won out and we used the one I wanted. It seemed to work pretty well. Actually, we were planning on going to Knoxville to get some more time on the track; but with the new motor in the car we wanted to test it out here at Eagle, and I’m glad that we did. We’re running the 360 Nationals qualifier next Friday at Knoxville, and we also got invited to run in the Brodix race on Sunday. So, unfortunately we won’t get the chance to be here to run against the All Stars next weekend, as much as I’d like to” Dover said. Jack finished by saying “I want to be sure that all of our fans know that this coming Thursday, July 31st our new T-shirts will be available. So, stop by and grab one while they last”. Dover’s sponsors include Langfeldt Overhead Door, 3 D Auto Transport Inc., RMS, Trail Performance Powder Coating, Thorpes Auto Body, Eckley Racing Engines, Eagle Chassis, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, ATV Motorsports, Speedway Motors, Bell Racing, Butler Built Professional Seat Systems, Design 500 Racewear, FK Rod Ends, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, CMET Excavating, NOS Energy Drink and BA Photos.

Remember that Eagle Raceway is hosting a special Sunday show tomorrow, July 27th when The Brew presents the Kornhusker Midget Klassic, featuring AIMS, SMRS and RMMRA midgets as well as a Circle Track Motorcycle race. The front gates open at 4 with racing at 5 P.M.

Next Saturday 96KX presents Thunder Thru the Plains Sprint ALL STAR Series featuring the Sprint ALL STAR Series, Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 with racing at 7:00.

Jerry Coons Jr. Wins Opening Swing at Eagle Raceway

By Greg Soukup

The first night of the Kornhusker Midget Klassic, featuring the AIMS/SMRS/RMMRA midgets and presented by The Brew along with the first ever flat-track motorcycle race ever at “America’s Home Track” started off under a clear sky and typical July temperatures. Unfortunately, this resulted in a very dry & slick track.

There were three major accidents in the preliminary races for the midgets. In the first heat Chad McDaniels’ #1C got together with the 45 of Aaron Kirk, causing both racecars to flip down the front stretch past the flag stand. In heat #3, Will Pierce suffered a flat right rear tire on his #10. When he slowed, Keith Rauch had nowhere to go in his #71 and was forced into the front stretch wall resulting in him flipping his midget. In the midget B Feature Robby Ross made very hard contact with the front stretch wall also.

The top 4 finishers in each motorcycle class, along with their bike #’s were:

Vintage 375’s
Frank Hardman (57X), Bill Snyder (4), Lloyd Hale (6X) and Josh Trail (29G)

Vintage 250/450’s
Colt Chebultz (47G), Chris Lodes (31L), Michael Toon (22L) and Aaron Lindtors (39G)

Vintage 600’s
Colt Chebultz (4), Frank Hardman (57X), Jody Hale (61) and Mark Jantz (49)

Vintage Twins
Tim Lindfors (7X), Frank Hardman (57X), Erik Bland (33) and Chris Jacobsen (22)

In the A Feature for the midgets Jerry Coons Jr. took advantage of his pole position to take the lead from the drop of the green flag in his #11 Wilke-Pak Mopar. He was followed by the o5 of Brad Loyet, Jonathon Beason’s 36 and the 73 of Josh Ford. Davey Ray moved around Ford to take over fourth in his #71X on lap #2. On the next lap Scott Fennell flipped his #33 in turn #3. After the restart the running order was Coons Jr., Loyet, Beason and Ray. On lap 7 Ray moved past Beason to take over third. On the next lap the 07X of Billy Mentgen, the 54E of Evan Pardo and Brent Rees’ 87 got together in turn #3 with Pardo flipping. Beason took advantage of the restart to get around Ray. On lap 10 Donnie Ray Crawford spun his #55 to the infield in turn 2 with front end damage. This time it was Ray taking advantage of a restart as he repassed Beason. 13 laps in Beason made a tremendous move all the way to the second position with Ford taking third and Ray in fourth. Two laps later Ray moved past Ford to again move into third. The very next time around Will Pierce flipped his #10 in turns 3 & 4, bringing out another red flag. Ray used the restart to move into second. With just 3 laps remaining Ford moved under Beason to third. On the next lap Ford suffered a flat right rear tire and went to the pits to have it replaced, rejoining the field at the tail. Beason also suffered a flat and likewise went to the pits. The three lap shootout saw Coons Jr. still holding the lead with Ford hot on his tail tank. In the last 3 laps Brad Kuhn made a major move all the way up to second. At the checkered flag it was Coons Jr., Kuhn, Ford and the 1X of Don Droud Jr.

“I was really fortunate to start on the pole tonight” Coons said. “I’ve been racing here since the 1990’s, but have never been able to have any luck at all. Tonight we finally turned it around for a win, and I couldn’t be happier” he stated. “Eagle has always been one of my favorite tracks anywhere, and I always look forward to coming back here” he continued. “I knew that if I ran conservatively and took care of my tires I could do it, and thankfully the tires held up and I got my first win here” he finished.

Be sure to come out next Saturday, August 2nd, for Thunder Thru the Plains, presented by 96KX and featuring the Sprint All Star Series with many of our local 360 sprint car drivers testing their mettle against the invaders. Also on the card will be the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks.
