Champions Crowned at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, NE (August 23) - It was championship night at Lincoln County Raceway on August 23, and it meant the final opportunity for drivers to improve their point positions and win totals. At the end of the night, Ronnie Wallace of McCook, Brandon Clough of Wallace, Cory Allen of Cozad, and Austin Farley of Brighton, Colorado added to their win totals. Wallace, Charley Brown of Maxwell, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and John Webster of North Platte were crowned the four track champions.

After a caution period on the third lap, Ronnie Wallace was put at the back of the IMCA Modified A Feature. Undaunted by the move and unaided by any further caution periods, Wallace set his sights on the front of the field. Jim Mlady of North Platte held that spot at that time, and enjoyed the lead until being overtaken by Jeremy Herbst of North Platte on lap seven. Mlady kept close to Herbst, but became embattled with North Platte racer Jay Steffens. As those two battled for the spot, Herbst pulled out with a big lead. It also allowed Wallace to catch up to that battle and slide around both with a few laps to go. As they came to take the white flag, Wallace had indeed finished his drive from the back to the front, and held on for the win and points title. Herbst finished in second place. Mlady held of Steffens for third, and Dan Carl of North Platte rounded out the top five. Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte and Ronnie Wallace were the heat race winners.

The IMCA Stock Car A Feature had six cautions in the first four laps, and officials decided that one more caution would mean the end of the race. As the field was coming to complete lap eight, the fourth place car spun and stalled in corner four, bringing out caution seven and the end of the race. The yellow flag did not come out until all of the drivers crossed the scoring line, but because his spin caused drivers behind him to slow down and lose positions, it was decided by officials to use the scoring of lap seven as the official finish, with the person causing the caution put to the back of the lead lap. That gave Brandon Clough his first IMCA Stock Car A Feature win. Shane Stout of North Platte was scored in second place. B Feature winner Shawn Bigham of Imperial finished in third place, ahead of IMCA Stock Car track champion Charley Brown and Travis Tilford of North Platte. Brown, Clough, and Stout were the heat race winners. Zach Schultz of North Platte took the victory in the cash dash.

IMCA Hobby Stock heat race winner Rick Eller of North Platte had the lead at the start of his main event, but a slip in corner four let Cory Allen sneak by with the lead on lap three. Allen would be joined up front by Dawson County Raceway promoter and Hobby Stock driver Allen Wissmann of Bertrand. Wissmann caught Allen and had a chance to take the lead at the end when the two came up on a slower car, but Cory Allen was able to get back to the finish line in first place. Eller finished in third, ahead of Ron Edge of Amherst, Colorado, and Jim Moore of Longmont, Colorado. The other heat was won by Miles White of North Platte. Austin Davis went into the night with the Hobby Stock point lead, and it appeared to be in jeopardy when his car shelled the drive train in the heat race. Maxwell driver Corey Cruzan and his team allowed Davis to start scratch in the A Feature with their car, allowing Davis to avenge his one point loss in the points in 2007.

Mini-Sprint heat winner Austin Farley took the lead of the Mini-Sprint A Feature as leader Cory Kelley’s car gave up the ghost for the night. Farley would not be challenged again for the lead for the remainder of the fifteen-lap event. John Webster finished in second place and secured the Mini-Sprint point title for his car. Jeremy Herst of North Platte finished in third place, with Colorado racers Bob DeRouchey of Fort Collins and Andy Farley of Brighton rounding out the top five.
While the regular season is over for Lincoln County Raceway, a special event is planned for Saturday Night, September 20. A press release should be released in the near future.
