Murray, Werkmeister, Pankonin, and Herrick On Fast Track April 16
By Darin Racek

McCOOK, NE (April 16) - Despite the recent wet weather, the track at McCook Speedway turned out super on April 16, allowing for multiple grooves of racing. The drivers of the four classes put on a show for the fans. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Casey Werkmeister of North Platte, Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis had the super nights, as they took the four A Feature wins.

Eddyville driver Chuck Stryker took the lead of the IMCA Modified A Feature from Ogallala’s Cole Hodges after a restart on the second lap of the race. Stryker had a decent lead on the field until a couple of cautions bunched everyone up to him. Heat winner David Murray was in second place, but a good start got him by Stryker and out to nearly a straightaway lead by the end of the race. Stryker had to hold off Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. on the last lap to maintain second at the finish. Jay Schilling of McCook stayed in front of Robbie Haines of Benkelman for fourth spot. The Cash Dash was won by Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan. Zach Schultz of North Platte, in just his second IMCA Modified start, won the other heat race.

The IMCA Stock Car class put on great racing all night. In the opening heat race, Dave Plowman of Gretna came from the back to pass Casey Werkmeister late in the race for the win. The second heat had Casey Woken of Ogallala holding off the late charge of Cale Osborn of Cozad for victory. All of the IMCA Stock Cars were put together for a twenty lap A Feature that did not disappoint. Casey Werkmeister and Fort Morgan, Colo. driver Jesse Taylor swapped the lead four times in the first twelve laps. Werkmeister had a fast car with a pushing issue that would mess him up enough to let Taylor get the best of him on lap two> Werkmeister got by him on lap six and worked himself out to a big lead when the caution came out on lap ten. His car pushed on the restart, allowing Taylor to drive by. A lap later, Casey had his car back under control and had control of the race, or so it seemed. Near the end of the race, he was joined up front by Lloyd Meeske of Champion and Plowman, who went to the back after a lap two incident. Meeske had a big power surge in corner three of the last lap and got along side of Werkmeister in corner four. However, at the finish line, Casey’s car came across the line first. Jason Davis of Norton, Kan. finished in fourth place, with Woken rounding out the top five.

Todd Pankonin had everything set up just right on his car and kept it out of the wall for a big night in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. After winning his heat race, he jumped out to the lead in the A Feature, a twelve lap event that went caution-free. His drive put him well ahead of Cody DeWester of McCook at the finish line. Leland Stute of Benkelman finished in third place, in spite of rolling his car three-and-three-quarters of corner one in the heat race. Litton Stute of Benkelman and Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan. were the other top five finishers, in that order.
The IMCA SportMod A Feature had a familiar name up front, and some familiar names unfamiliar to the class in the top three. Last years track champion Bryan Herrick, in a new car for him this year, swept both the heat race and A Feature. Shane Stout of North Platte, who has spent the past decade driving Stock Cars and Street Stocks, made his SportMod debut, and at the end of the race was closing in on Herrick. Last year’s Classic Modified champion Max Pollmann of Trenton brought his SportMod to the finish line in third place. Chad Young of Imperial finished in fourth place. Matt Matson of McCook was credited with fifth place.

The next night of racing for McCook Speedway will be Friday night, April 30. The gates open at 6 p.m., and the races will start at 8 p.m., Central Time.
