Williams and Osborn Finish Ahead of Mother Nature
By Darin Racek

LEXINGTON, NE (May 23) A fast-moving thunderstorm hit Dawson County Raceway with three features to go on May 23. The IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Car, and IMCA Hobby Stock A Features that were rained out will be run on Sunday, May 30, before the regular show. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races start at 6:30 p.m. Ty Williams of Liberal, Kansas, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were able to beat the storm and their competitors to win their A Feature events.

The United Rebel Sprint Series came to town for the eighth event on their schedule, searching for an eighth A Feature winner. Jeff Radcliffe of Hill City, Kansas started on the pole of the twenty-five lap event, and jumped to the lead. The second and final period of the race happened on lap three after Ransom, Kansas driver Reed Bernbeck broke something on his right rear wheel, causing him to spin on the front stretch. Craig Jecha of Timken, Kansas damaged his car avoiding the spin and hitting the inside guardrail, ending both of their nights. Heat winner Ray Seemann of Jetmore, Kansas started the race in the fifth row, yet had moved up to the runner-up position at the restart. He wasted no time in taking ramrod position from Radcliffe and stretching out a large lead. When heat race winner Ty Williams moved into second place, he was over two-and-a-half seconds behind Seemann, but as the laps went by, he reeled him in. With six laps to go, he was within striking distance. On the next lap, Seemann’s car pushed through corner one, allowing Williams to drive underneath, take the lead, and become the first driver to have two A Feature wins on the season for the URSS. Seemann settled for second place. Darren Berry of McCook also started on the fifth row and earned a third place finish. Rookie Zach Blurton of Jetmore, Kansas, the other heat winner for the class, finished in fourth place. Radcliffe, the last car on the lead lap, finished in fifth.

It took the IMCA SportMod a couple of tries to get one lap in, but once they did, they went the fifteen laps unabated. On the completion of the first lap, Shane Stout of North Platte tried to pass Vince Leibert of Lexington for the lead. Leibert’s car wouldn’t turn and pushed into the wall. Stout had to hit the brakes, and that allowed Colton Osborn to sneak underneath both of them for the lead. While Colton paced all fifteen laps for his second feature win in a row, there were times when the car would have some trouble getting through a corner, and that kept Bryan Herrick of Curtis fairly close at the end. Robby Leonard of Gibbon went to the back of the field at the beginning of the race after jumping a start and passed Shane Stout late for third place. Brandon Leonard of Gibbon finished in fifth place.

Right after that, the storm was closing in on the track and the evening was called.

Earlier in the night, seventeen IMCA Modifieds, thirteen IMCA Stock Cars, and eighteen IMCA Hobby Stocks ran six qualifying heat races to set up the lineups for their A Features, which now will be run May 30. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas showed the way in the IMCA Modified heats. Cale Osborn of Cozad and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood won the heat races for the IMCA Stock Car division. Jim Buss of Blue Hill and Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island held off some tough competition to win for IMCA Hobby Stock heat race victories.
