Oberlin Duo Do The Double at McCook Speedway
By Darin Racek

McCOOK, NE (June 25) - With four make up A Features before the regular show, everyone knew it was going to be a long night at McCook Speedway with lots of racing. As promoter Dennis McFarland opted to allow cars not there at June 11to run those make up features, there were extra cars on hand. By the end of the night, the A Feature winners were David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Colton and Cale Osborn of Cozad, Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas, and Jon Plowman of Woodbine, Iowa.

Jeremy Herbst of North Platte and Cole Hodges were having a good battle for the lead in the open IMCA Modified A Feature. About the time Herbst passed Hodges on lap five, David Murray slipped underneath Hodges and Herbst for the lead. Brandon Hagan of McCook came on strong late in the race, but even a caution with four laps to go get him up to Murray. Herbst held on for third place, while Jeremy Frenier finished in fourth place. In the last corner of the last lap, Hodges spun, entangling other cars with him. The finish for the rest of the field was determined how they completed with lap nineteen, which Hodges at the rear of the line of the lead lap and Jay Steffens of North Platte in fifth place.

After having a terrible accident in Holyoke, Colorado Sunday, McCook racer Ronnie Wallace looked to put the ghosts of that wreck behind him. Racing the car Brian Hagan of Culbertson ran the last two years, Wallace started the second Modified A Feature in row three, working his way into the lad on lap five. Wallace had a good lead on the field and on heat race winners Jeremy Frenier and David Murray, who were running in second and third places. After Wallace completed lap ten, it appeared the car shut off. He drove the car off of corner two, calling it a night. Frenier enjoyed the lead for only a lap, as Murray took the lead on lap twelve and never looked back for his second win of the night. Jay Schilling of McCook found the right groove for his car late in the race and got by Frenier for the second spot. Brandon Hagan and Zach Schultz of North Platte rounded out the field. Clinton Hockersmith of Oakley, Kansas, won the night’s other IMCA Modified A Feature.

There have been some IMCA Stock Car A Features in the area that have looked more like wars than races of late, and the first Stock feature of the night was no exception. Seven cautions slowed this twenty lap affair. Casey Woken of Ogallala paced the early race, with his car set up in a way the left front tire was coming off of the ground in corner two. Four tires are faster than three, and Cole Osborn proved it after a lap eight restart, taking the lead. Near the end of the race, the win came down between Osborn, Dave Plowman of Gretna, and Casey Werkmeister, who worked though the field after being put to the back on lap two. When they came around for the white flag, Plowman made the move up high for the lead. Osborn moved up into him, allowing Werkmeister to move into second place. In corner two, Plowman got into Werkmeister, which got him a trip to the back of the field. Osborne stayed ahead of Werkmeister on that final one lap restart for his first McCook Speedway win of the year. Woken finished in third, with Jason Davis of Norton, Kansas and Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood rounding out the top five.

Only a dozen Stock Cars started the second main event, but all finished the race, on the lead lap, and without a caution period. Casey Werkmeister got by Eric Hasenauer of North Platte and Brandon Clough of Wallace for the lead on lap three. Lloyd Meeske of Champion tracked him down first, and then Dave Plowman joined the battle. Plowman was able to sneak by Meeske, but not Werkmeister, who finished one short earlier of making it a double feature win night. Davis finished in fourth again, this time ahead of Larry Pollmann of McCook. Osborn, Plowman, and Meeske took the heat wins for the night.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks had only caution period during their two A Features. Dalton Dolan started on the pole of the first one, but lost the lead to Richard Boon of Benkelman. After Boon spun out with a flat tire on lap seven, Dolan took the lead back and held onto it for his first ever IMCA Hobby Stock feature win. Cody DeWester of McCook, Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, Litton Stute of Benkelman, and Allen Wissmann of Bertrand rounded out the top five.

After Boon and Dolan won the two heat races, Boon took command of the second A Feature. Dolan fell behind he, Pankonin, Wissmann, and DeWester when he found out how good his car could run in the high line. On the seventh lap, Pankonin, the leader by then, and the rest caught slower traffic on the lower side of the track. Dolan drove it hard up high, and by corner three, had the lead. He held off a late charge by Pankonin to earn his second win of the night. Boon, Wissmann, and DeWester rounded out the top five.

The first IMCA Northern SportMod A Feature presented the crowd with a first-time winner as well. Mitch Hamilton of McCook was hoping to the first-time winner, pacing the race until he fell off the backstretch on lap seven. That handed the lead to Bryan Herrick of Curtis. That has often meant in the past two seasons that Herrick would go on for the win, but with one lap to go, sixteen-year-old Jon Plowman powered by for his first SportMod A Feature win. Herrick was followed by Colton Osborn, Jacob Adler of Holyoke, Colorado, and Chad Young of Imperial.

Later in the night, The SportMods had an awful time of getting the first lap in. After four tries, heat winner Colton Osborn finally led the field to the completion of lap one. Shane Stout of North Platte, the other heat winner, would keep it a close race, but never get close enough to make a lead change. Plowman backed his win up with a third place finish in the second A. Herrick and Matt Matson of McCook were the other top five finishers.

Some McCook Speedway schedules show a rain date for July 2. However, that date will NOT be used. The next race at McCook Speedway will be on Friday night, July 9, with the racing starting at 8 p.m., Central Time. It will be another Burger King 9 for 9 night for the IMCA Modifieds. Mini-Sprints will be on the card as well.
