Murray Doubles Up at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, NE. (July 10) On a night where once again weather seemed to be an issue, Lincoln County Raceway managed to get the entire program completed. The program included the regular show, a make-up A Feature for the Modifieds, and the addition of the Colorado Sidewinder Association Mini-Sprints, and yet, it was completed in just over three hours. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Austin Davis of Benkelman, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Arden Myers of McCook weathered the storms on the track to take the A Feature wins.

The IMCA Modified A Feature that was cancelled July 3 started off the night. Charley Brown of Maxwell took the lead on lap three and held onto it until he went into the pits, six laps from the end with a tire issue. That handed the lead to David Murray, who would accept the lead graciously and kept it until he crossed the finish line. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado started the race in seventeenth, but used the twenty laps to move into second place at the finish. Ronnie Wallace of McCook finished in third, with Dave Pedersen of Brady taking fourth, and Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook finishing in fifth.
Murray also won the regularly scheduled feature as well. Mike Saathoff of North Platte took the lead at the start of the race and built a nice lead over Dave Pedersen and the field. Unfortunately, three cautions in the first eight laps kept bunching the field back up to him, and each time Murray was starting closer to the front. Murray got by on lap eleven, and soon after, it started to sprinkle. Fortunately, there were no more yellows, and the race went to completion. The wins kept Murray perfect for the season at Lincoln County Raceway going 6 for 6 in feature wins. Saathoff remained in second place. At the finish line, Brandon Hagan of McCook beat Dave Pedersen by inches for the third place. Charley Brown was credited with fifth place after Frenier did not go to the scale after the races. Brown, Murray, and Saathoff were also IMCA Modified heat race winners.

Mike Nichols has begun a streak of his own in the IMCA Stock Car class, as his victory was his third consecutive win at the track. Nichols passed Dan Eller of North Platte for the lead after a restart on lap five and would never look back, which was probably a good thing, as his car would smoke through the corners. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood would pass and be passed throughout the race, but finally made a good run in the last twelve caution-free laps to move to second at the finish. His brother Kyle finished a respectable third place. Brandon Clough of Wallace and Cash Dash winner Casey Woken of Ogallala rounded out the top five finishers. Clough and Colton Osborn won the heat races.

Colton Osborn did not finish the Stock Car A Feature. However, his run in his IMCA SportMod went much better for him. Osborn sat back in third and let Bryan Herrick of Curtis and Shane Stout of North Platte battle it out for the lead, which they literally did. Stout took the lead at the halfway point and pulled out to a healthy lead when, with two laps to go, Herrick spun. That allowed heat winner Osborn to start in second place, get by Stout on the eleventh lap, and lead the twelfth lap, the final one. Stout faded after the restart. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg finished in second place in his second race. Matt Caudillo and Tim Cooper of North Platte finished in third and fourth places, while Herrick finished in fifth place.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had only one stoppage during the twelve lap event. There was a revolving door at the front of the race until Austin Davis found to the front. The purple car of John Groshans he was driving was making it’s first appearance in North Platte, but the car worked well, garnering Davis the win. Heat race winners Corey Cruzan of Maxwell and Dan Morash of North Platte were the second and third place finishers. Colorado drivers Michael Woodhead of Holyoke and Ron Edge of Amherst rounded out the top five.

Arden Myers led all but the final three laps of the Mini-Sprint race the night before in McCook, and took it out on the CSA entrants on Saturday night. Arden, a former track champion at Lincoln County Raceway, paced every lap during the win. Jeff Wignall of Alliance placed in second. Troy Nielson of Hordville had one of his best finishes, bringing his car home in third place. Dustin Weland of Parker, Colorado and Nick Rigali of Aurora, Colorado finished out the top five roster.

The next race at Lincoln County Raceway will be Tuesday night, July 13, when the four regular classes “Run For The Money.” Drivers will draw for starting spots that night and have a chance at extra money in the features. Extra cars will be on hand in all four divisions, and the IMCA Blood, Sweat, and Tears Modified Touring Series will be on hand as well. The gates will open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m., Central Time.
