Hodges Repeats, Cruzan and Osborn Three-peats
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, NE (May 28, 2011) - It was a wild and strange night at Lincoln County Raceway, beginning with the single load of water that took a long time to work in and ending with the final checkered flag of the night. Cole Hodges of Ogallala, Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell probably felt the least strange, taking the A Feature wins of the nights.

The IMCA Modified A Feature began with a good battle up front between veterans Jay Steffens of North Platte and Ronnie Wallace of McCook. Wallace finally garnered the lead on lap six. While Wallace controlled the front of the field, Hodges worked his way from his row five starting spot up to second place before the final caution on lap eleven. On the restart, Hodges began to reel Wallace in, finally sneaking underneath him and taking the lead with two laps to go. Wallace hung right with him, and on the last lap, tried a cross under move to sneak by, but Hodges was on the right track for his second victory in a row. Steffens finished in third, ahead of Saturday birthday boy Andrew Dillenburg and Wednesday birthday boy Terry Houchin of North Platte. Wallace and his teammate Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook took the Modified heat race wins.

The IMCA Stock Cars started off slow, but once they started rolling, everyone was trying to catch Kerry Jones of North Platte. Justin Bussell of Imperial caught him and passed him at lap five, right when his car began to smoke. He lost a plug in his transmission, allowing the fluid to come out, and forcing Bussell to limp his fast car into the pits. Bob Chalupa of North Platte then inherited the lead. As the race wound down, Kyle Werkmeister, Casey Woken of Ogallala, and cash dash winner Kyle Clough of Wallace closed in, but Chalupa hit all of his marks and crossed the finish line first. After the race, he took his car directly to the pits rather than the claim area, violating one of the oldest IMCA rules in the book and handing the win to Werkmeister, who also won his heat. Everyone else moved up one spot in the finish as well. Woken and Colton Osborn were the other two victors in the Stock Car heat races.

Corey Cruzan proved to be the man for the third time in three tries this season in IMCA Hobby Stock A Features. Cruzan passed Woody Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado on lap nine and pulled out to a huge lead as the Hobbies went their final nineteen laps without a yellow flag. Heat winners Woodhead and Benkelman driver Austin Davis got together battling for second place on the final lap. Davis got the better of it, barely beating the Colorado driver for the spot. Rick Eller of North Platte ran one of his strongest races of the year, which was good enough for fourth place. Ron Edge of Holyoke, Colorado took fifth place.

Eighteen IMCA Northern SportMod cars were on hand to race Saturday night, but only fourteen made it onto the track for the A Feature, one of those late. Bryan Herrick of Curtis has had some motor issues of late, but looked to have them in the past, taking the first lead of the A Main. He had a fair, but waning lead on Colton Osborn when the only caution occurred with four laps to go, forcing the field to line up nose-to-tail. Osborn was able to take the lead away in the last couple of laps en route to his third feature win in as many race nights in North Platte. Second place was better for Herrick than he’s seen the previous two nights. Jacob Adler of Holyoke, Colorado passed nine cars to finish in third place. North Platte drivers Rodger Morash and R. C. Heil rounded out the top five. Adler and Heil were joined as heat race winners by Mikey Dancer of North Platte.

June 4th will be a busy night at Lincoln County Raceway. Besides the regular four classes, the Outlaw Vintage/Mod Lite cars will come to town to put on a show. There will be a candy toss for the kids and driver autographs at intermission. Certainly not least, it will be the American Cancer Society “Relay at The Races” night. Water permitting, the races will start at 7 p.m., Central Time.
