McCook Drivers Return to Victory Lane
By Darin Racek

MC COOK, NE (July 22, 2011) - After another hot day in Southwest Nebraska, fans came out to McCook Speedway to watch some hot racing, and perhaps a couple of drivers overheat as well. McCook drivers Darren Berry, Don Hagan, Jr., and Bob Chalupa, as well as Shane Stout of North Platte and Austin Davis of Benkelman rode the hot horses to the A Feature wins.

The IMCA 305 Sprint Cars had a first time winner in their heat race when Rod Hadley watched fellow Norton, Kansas driver drive off corner two on the last lap to pick up his first win. Hadley went to the front at the beginning of the A Feature, but was overtaken by John Webster of North Platte. Webster led much of the feature on July 8, but on this night, he would only lead one lap. Darren Berry stormed by him on the top, and by the end of the caution-free, fifteen lap event, had nearly a half-lap lead on the North Platte driver. Howard Van Dyke of Clay Center, Kansas finished in fourth place, while Bantam finished in fifth place, the last car on the lead lap.

Don Hagan., Jr. went back to his newer WFO IMCA Modified in spite of overheating issues with the engine. Hagan, the heat winner, took the lead at the start, followed by other McCook drivers Brent Bohmont and Ronnie Wallace. On lap eight, Bohmont had trouble in corner two, with Wallace right behind him, and that allowed Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado and Charles Stryker of Eddyville to pass both of them. Wallace would drop out of the race, but Bohmont would again get in front of the Eddyville Flyer, only to get passed again by him on the last lap for third spot. Frenier stayed well ahead of those drivers, but could not track down Hagan.

Bob Chalupa brought out his M &M designed IMCA Stock Car and started on row one of the A Feature beside heat winner Bob Hoing of Overton. Chalupa took the early lead, and was soon challenged by Casey Woken of Ogallala. Woken slowly worked his way along the side of Chalupa and actually made the pass in corner four of the ninth lap. Unfortunately, his car slid way up, slowed Chalupa some, and opened the door for heat winner Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood to take the lead. Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado was in tow and made an attempt for the lead on lap twelve. Somehow in corner four, the two tangled up, sending them both up the track and into the tire barrier. While it ended their nights, it put “The Candy Man” back in the lead. Dave Plowman of Gretna aligned in second place and ended up battling Woken the last eight laps for second place, a race Casey was able to win. However, that aided Chalupa to pull away for his first win of the year. Cale Osborn of Cozad took home fourth place, and McCook’s Larry Pollmann finished in fifth place.

There was a good race for the lead during much of the IMCA Northern SportMod main. Bryan Herrick of Curtis had the lead position from the drop of the green flag, but had pressure from Colton Osborn of Cozad and Shane Stout. On lap seven, it appeared for a moment Stout would move from third to first in a corner, but somehow “The Duck” regained the top spot by the scoring line. With two laps to go, Osborn stopped after receiving a flat tire from the close racing, and that bunched up the field again. On the final restart, while many people were watching to see if Hunter Cantrall of Overton made the corner after flying off the track via the exit ramp, Stout was able to make his move by Herrick, the final one he needed to achieve his third track win of the year. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and Cody DeWester of McCook quietly took home third and fourth places. Osborn was able to get back up into fifth place, right ahead of Josh Bopp of McCook, the SportMod heat race winner.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks ran only an A Feature. Austin Davis of Benkelman had some mechanical issues the previous week racing at Holyoke, and was hoping the changes he and his team made worked. His car ran much better, as he passed Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis for the lead on the opening lap and never looked back. Ray Caldwell of McCook finished the race in third place.

On Thursday night, July 28, the annual Red Willow County Race will be held at McCook Speedway. The night will feature a combination of IMCA 305 and URSS 305 Sprint Cars. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, and IMCA Northern SportMods will also race. It will be a draw-redraw for all classes. Races will start at 7:30 p.m. that night. Grandstand tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for all children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.
