Berry Fares Well at Fair Races
by Darin Racek

(McCOOK, NE (July 28, 2011) A rain sprinkle turned into a heavy shower for 5 minutes about a 1/2 hour before the start of the Red Willow County fair races at McCook Speedway, and it almost rained on the parade of fans and drivers of the area. While the tractor parade set for intermission was called off, the mud was bladed and packed into an excellent race track for everyone that stayed for racing. At the end of the night, Darren Berry of McCook, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Dave Plowman of Gretna, and Colton Osborn of Cozad had sunshiny smiles in victory lane, as well at 7-foot tall winner's trophies.

Troy Edwards of Culbertson jumped to the early lead of the 305 Sprint Car A Feature, only to be passed after the first lap by Tommy Lee Williams of North Platte. A caution period negated the pass, and on the restart, Edwards pulled away to a commanding lead. After Williams's car broke, Darren Berry aligned on the back bumper of Edwards. On lap seven, Berry made the pass for the lead. The two made contact after the pass was made, but Berry held on for the lead. Edwards dropped out of the race, which opened the door for heat winner John Webster of North Platte. Webster made a daring two-car pass for second place and tried to track down Berry. It was not to be, as Berry held on for his second win in as many weeks. Zach Blurton of Jetmore, Kansas finished in third place, with Mike Saathoff of North Platte taking fourth. Eastern Kansas drivers Howard Van Dyke of Clay Center and Mike Spear of Lincoln (who won the other heat), were the next two finishers.

The races had a delay during the IMCA Modified heat races when Charles Stryker of Eddyville went off corner one and rolled, with the right rear of the car landing on a tall fence pole. It took a wrecker and front end loader to dislodge the damaged race car. Stryker was not hurt, and borrowed his brother-in-law's Craig Howard's SportMod to start the feature. Although he was underpowered, he managed to pass a few cars and finished in eighth place. Jeremy Frenier started on the front row, took the lead at the start, and had a commanding lead at the conclusion of the fifteen lap event. Heat winners David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas and Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte finished in second and third places. McCook drivers Ronnie Wallace and Don Hagan, Jr. rounded out the top five.

The twenty lap IMCA Stock Car A Feature was slowed by only one caution on lap three, and the drivers were battling throughout the fourteen car field. Heat race winner Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood gave up the lead after leading up to the caution, handing it over to Champion's Lloyd Meeske. Meeske would battle with Dave Plowman and heat winner Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado for eleven laps. On the fourteenth lap, Messke jumped the cushion on corner three, allowing several cars to get by. Plowman would keep Taylor at bay to hold on for the win. Cale Osborn of Cozad and Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas, battled side-by-side for much of the race, and they finished third and fourth, respectively. Meeske would be able to finish in fifth place.

Colton Osborn drew the pole for the IMCA Northern SportMod A Feature, and took full advantage of it, pacing every lap of the fifteen lap event. The racing behind him was tough, as Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, and heat winner Shane Stout of North Platte would jockey for positions. Kennicutt would finally move into second place and hold on for the spot. With less than two laps to go, Stout was able to move past Herrick for third place. Craig Howard of Lexington finished in fifth place. The other IMCA Northern SportMod was won by McCook's own Josh Bopp.

McCook Speedway will race again, weather permitting, on Friday night, August 5. The IMCA Hobby Stocks will return. Racing will start at 8 p.m., Central Time.
