BAKKEN, SCHMITT, SMIDT, BROWN BAG BRITT CHECKERS ON WEST HANCOCK COUNTY AMBULANCE NIGHT
By Emily Hiscocks

BRITT, Ia (May 19, 2006) Smooth and fast the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway was just that on Friday night. This set the stage for some great racing on West Hancock County Ambulance Night. In addition to this, the car count was the highest it has been yet this season during the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series.

The USRA B-Modified feature kept the spotters busy with several cautions. With a total of six spinouts, Logan Brown maintained his lead from the start. The "Meservey Missile" was challenged on the last restart by the #21 of Jesse Hoeft, only to take the lead back in turn 4 of the final lap when Hoeft lost control.

The 17-year-old was all smiles after his first win of the season.

“I am motivated this season,” stated Brown. “The nickname only provides some confidence.”

With four spinouts and a constant battle for the lead, the USRA Hobby Stocks provided some excitement for all fans. Tony Smidt took the lead when the green flag dropped only to be challenged by the #24 of Michael Schadendorf. With two laps to go, Schadendorf tried an inside pass, and on the final lap tried the high side.

To no avail, and Smidt held strong for the victory.

The Junior and Senior Hornet class saw the biggest increase in participants. The Junior Hornet feature was taken by the #00 of Colby Fett after a short battle with Trever Nelson. In a race that saw four-wide racing on the backstretch, the Senior Hornets kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Travis Nelson kept his #9x in the lead until the halfway mark when Greg Birkhofer caught up on the backstretch. After a short battle, Birkhofer pulled away for the victory.

Quite opposite from the previous races, the USRA Stock Cars raced nearly caution-free. Chad Palmer pulled into the lead at the beginning and was in constant battle with Tom Schmitt and John Campbell. After the race’s first spinout, Campbell dropped back, which left Palmer and Schmitt to do battle.

Jeff Dolphin and Kevin Opheim were fighting to gain the third spot, respectively. After jockeying for a secure position, Dolphin edged Opheim at the finish line for third while Schmitt pulled ahead of Palmer for the victory.

“The competition and track were great tonight,” commented Schmitt. “I plan on making the trip from Independence to race here weekly this year.”

The USRA Modifieds provided a quick end to the evening. The first half of the race lapsed without caution as Brad Bakken pulled away from the pack. On the restart, Mark Elliot put up a challenge but Bakken and life on the high side of the track made it difficult for anyone to take over the lead.

Bakken crossed the finish line first with Elliot close behind for second.

Next weekend will provide great racing action. Fertilizer Equipment and Garner Powersports will be sponsoring the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing series featuring USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Modifieds and USRA Hobby Stocks plus Hornets. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for kids ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are admitted FREE each night.

Don’t miss the Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Memorial Day Shootout on Monday, May 29. This night will feature the stars and cars of the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) plus the USRA Stock Cars racing for $700 to win. Come out for Pass the Helmet Night and support your local Relay for Life team. Throughout the races, you will have a chance to meet some of your favorite racers as they volunteer to pass their helmets around to collect donations. Admission for this event is Adults $15, Kids (6-12) $5, and kids under 6 are admitted free. Gates will open at 4 p.m., hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30.
