Blum, Veloz, and Moline Make It Two Straight at Davenport
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (May 26, 2006) – Although it may be early in the 2006 racing season, several drivers were showing mid-season form Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Friday was also the first Kid' Night of the season, with bike races held for the young ones following the stock car action.

Kevin Blum continued his dominance of local dirt tracks winning his second straight IMCA late model victory at Davenport and his fourth straight in the last two weeks. Blum picked up the win despite leading only a handful of the twenty-five laps in the late model main.

The feature started with Adam Oppendike leading the race, before handing off the lead to Ron Gustaf. Gustaf would build up a sizeable lead for a short time but gave it up to Matt Ryan around lap 15. Ryan would lose the lead to a charging Hershel Roberts a lap later. Roberts looked to have the victory in hand when a lap 20 caution would put the field on his back bumper.

Contact between Roberts and another driver on the ensuing restart was the only help Kevin Blum (started 13th) needed as he launched himself into the lead and then the winner's circle. Roberts would have to settle for second with Tom Darbyshire third, Fred Remley fourth, and Ryan fifth.

Late Model heat race wins went to Ryan, Terry Neal, and Andy Nezworski.

With nearly 30 V-8 Modifieds in the pit area again on Friday, just qualifying for the feature was job one. Once the green flag fell, the 20-lap A-main went just like last Friday. almost all twenty laps non-stop with Milo Veloz Jr. leading the entire distance.

Milo Veloz Jr. took the lead from the inside of the second row and drove to his second straight win at Davenport. Jerry Connors started in the sixth row and would get to Veloz's bumper, but could not mount a pass for the lead. Finishing third behind Connors was John Bull with Chuck Hanna and Bob Dominacki rounding out the top five.

Modified heat race wins went to Tony VonDresky, Bob Dominacki, and Veloz. Chris Giegle won the semi-feature.

Rob Henry came from a fourth row starting spot to win the Street Stock feature. After a handful of different leaders early in the race, Henry took the lead and was puling away from the field as he took the checkers. Matt Burroughs was best of the rest taking second with Korey Peterson third, Rick Schriner fourth, and Henry Carson rounding out the top five. Henry and Tim Koehler won the heats.

The B-Mod main saw Jeremy Marquette take the feature win in a race that ended under caution. Marquette took the lead after a bunch of early cautions. Jeremy took the white flag just before the race's final caution and just ahead of second place Pat Fennelly. Dan Anderson crossed the finish line in third, but wa sDQ;'s for being light at the scales, Jake Waterman was credited with third, BJ Jackson fourth, and Jason Pershy fifth. Jason Pershy, Mike Fluegel, and Doug Burkhead were the heat winners.

Keith Moline took the third straight win of the season in INEX Legend Car action. Moline wrestled the lead away from Rick Harris en route to the win. Harris would hold on for second over Eric Barth, with Perry Mitchell and Warren Ropp completing the top five. Warren Ropp and Moline took the heats.

Dustin Kay was finally able to stop his brother Justin Kay in the 4-Cylinder main. Justin Kay had won the three previous features, but could not overcome the early lead Dustin had put on the field. Behind the brothers Kay, Todd Sibley would finish third, with Brad Roelandt fourth, and Steven Boyle fifth.
