Aikey Takes First Ever IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model Race At Shelby County Speedway
by: Vickie Errett

HARLAN, IA (July 12, 2006) - The IMCA Deery Brothers touring late-models made their first appearance ever in 20 years in Harlan, IA at the Shelby County Speedway on Wed., July 12 during the Shelby County Fair. Four-time series champion Jeff Aikey of Waterloo, Iowa led from green to checkered in the caution free 40 lap late-model race.

After two close action B features narrowed the field, the 24 top late models circled the track with their dramatic four-wide pace lap, with front row each with American flags in hand. Darting to the front was Jeff Aikey through the first turn, but Jeremy Grady reals him in on the backstretch to make side by side racing, Mike Murphy and Bob Toland close behind. Aikey with his smooth consistent driving pulls away from Grady and Murphy and Toland move up to second and third. As Toland and Murphy begin the most exciting battle of the night Aikey pulls away with a comfortable lead to start lapping the field with 25 laps to go. But the battle to watch continued to be Murphy and Toland with Toland getting under Murphy when they started into lap traffic. Murphy with his calculated moves will keep
regaining his position until the last 10 laps of the race Toland secures the second place and pulls away from Murphy, but never threatening Aikey. As the checkers flew it was Aikey, Toland, Murphy,Grady rounding out the top four. A great show was put on by track regular Dave Jorgensen finishing fifth and Andy Nezworski starting 24th and making it all the way to a sixth place finish.

Galen Grabill, 2005 Shelby County Speedway Track Champion, takes the lead going into turns one and two. Matt Smith and Kerry Kierscht were running side by side fighting for second as Grabill pulls away from the rest of the pack. Smith takes control over second with Kierscht, Matt McAtee and Mike Brown completing the top four. Kierscht and McAtee both out maneuvered Smith to take the second and third spots on the fourth lap of the race, while Grabill keeps extending his lead, and Smith holds fourth. Laps five and six see Brown power into the fourth position and hold it over Tim Podraza until lap eight as Podraza gets by Brown to make the top five. Grabill, Kierscht, McAtee, Podraza and Brown to stay the same and hold their positions to the end of the race. Grabill having a commanding lead the entire race.

Kyle Wahlett jumped right off to lead the IMCA Northern Sport Mods into the first turn of the twelve lap

A-Feature but in no time Cody Warrick and Kevin Bruck made it a three-wide show. Coming up from behind riding on the high side was Scott Davis who took the lead half way through the race. Wahlett pulls up next to Davis in the corners threatening to take the lead back but finally Davis pulls away with five laps to go, to leave Wahlett in second, Bruck with third and Ladehoff rounding out the top four.

Lindsay Yost took the lead at the start of the Hornet race into turn one. With a caution coming out for a total restart, Austin Kurtzer and Kelson Kurtzer decided to make it three wide with Yost. Austin running on the inside edge pulls out the lead and holds it to the end of the six lap feature for a victory ahead of Kelson, Will Muhr and Steve Mc Connell.

Regular season racing will continue on Sat. night with Home Pride Company and Maxi-Walker Uniform Night at the Shelby County Speedway. Hot laps are at 6:30 with racing to follow.
