The Nostalgia Stock Car Club of Iowa made their annual visit to West Liberty Raceway
by: Nadine Brockert

WEST LIBERTY, IA. (Aug. 5, 2006) - The Nostalgia Stock Car Club of Iowa made their annual visit to West Liberty Raceway in conjunction with the Mississippi Valley Speed Club Oldtimers’ Picnic at the fairgrounds Saturday. On hand was the #75 Mercury Cyclone as driven by the late John Connolly, the 1970 Nova #8 of Darrell Dake, #9 Chevelle of Curt Hansen, #21 1970 Nova of Verlin Eaker and #44 Chevelle as driven by Glen Martin. Also appearing were a 1966 Mercury Cyclone and a 1966 Chevelle. Watching these cars make their way around the West Liberty half-mile once again brought smiles to many faces.

By feature time, the track was dry, black, slick and shiny as ebony. The JC Dubil Late Model feature was one of the most exciting races all year. By lap 8, Ron Boyse had assumed the lead and kept the #74 at the front of the pack, with #77 Kurt Kile snapping at his heels. A lap 23 caution tightened the field and brought the #56 of Andy Eckrich within striking distance of the front. The green/white/checkered shootout brought everyone to their feet. The race outcome was in doubt until the last turn of the last lap when Boyse got up into the marbles and became a casualty of the slick track. Somehow he avoided spinning out and held on for fifth place. Eckrich took first, followed by Todd Davis, Matt Gilchrist, Kurt Kile and Boyse.

The Miller Time Modifieds feature saw a different winner this week, as Mike Thomas took the victory. Thomas took the lead at lap 7, and kept it following a lap 9 caution that saw Gus Hughes #30 go to the pits. At the checkers, Thomas had nearly a half straightaway lead on the second place car. Finishing second was Bruce Hanford, followed by Scott Stecher, Brad Dubil and Ryan Dolan.

The Corner Tap Limited Late Model feature had only two laps down when Harvey Bloomer climbed the wall in 3 and 4 and barrel-rolled, taking part of the fence with him and bringing out the red light. Harvey emerged without a scratch but the #2 machine looked ready for recycle. Sam Harroun took the lead on lap 2 from his second row starting spot, and held on for the win, followed by Matt Bodman, Dan Brockert, Troy Philpott and Tim Rock.

The Kile Motorsports Stock Cars feature saw a repeat of the past several weeks as Scotty Pratty once again showed why he is the current USRA points leader. He was in second place by lap 3 from his sixth row start position and took the lead on lap 4. Pratt’s nearest challenge was nearly a straightaway behind when the checkers flew. Rounding out the top five were Jerry Pratt, Adam Bell, Scott Walker and Trent Vrchoticky.

The QCSA Auto Auction Hornets feature saw Jarrod McMichael come from his tenth row outside starting position to claim victory. Shaun Slaughter, Geoffrey Theobald, Robert Harding Jr, and Darin Smith completed the top five.
