BRUCK, BERGHAHN, BENGARD, SMITH, AND MUHR SHARE WINNERS CIRCLE AT SHELBY COUNTY SPEEDWAY
by Bonnie Errett

HARLAN, IA (Aug 19, 2006) – It was Nishna Valley REC night at Shelby County Speedway Saturday, with 95 cars joining in racing action. Two drivers, B.J. Bruck and Denny Berghahn, checked off their second wins of the season.

The IMCA Modified feature had an initial leader of B.J. Bruck, but by the end of the first lap, Chad Dills obtained the front position. On the second lap of the race, Tyler Pemble worked his way up to third after starting the race in tenth. The following lap found Bruck back in the lead, but it was not long before Pemble soared by to claim first for himself. Bub LeRette filled in third, but Pemble pulled in just five laps into the feature, advancing LeRette to second and Bruck back up to the lead. Dills fought to hold off his contenders, but Dan McKeighan slipped by with twelve laps to go. Bruck maintained a strong lead, and Dills reclaimed third, but at four to go, it was McKeighahn in the position once more. After a caution at two to go, Dills dominantly dove under McKeighan for third and followed LeRette and Bruck to the finish.

Going into turn one of the ProAm feature, Jim Kruse took control of the race ahead of Matt Smith in second. Behind them, Denny Berghahn Jr. powered forward, snatching second from Smith one lap after the drop of the green. Denny Berghahn Sr. was not far behind, acquiring third on the following lap. With a flat tire, Kruse was forced to leave the race just four laps in, and Berghahn Jr. took over the front spot ahead of Berghahn Sr. and Matt McAtee. One lap later, the father-son Berghahn duo went into a battle for the lead that lasted four laps. Berghahn Sr. came out on top, and McAtee and Mike Brown took Berghahn Jr. three-wide for second. Brown grabbed a hold of the position but lost it to McAtee with five laps remaining in the race. The top four remained single-file to the finish line as Berghahn Sr. sailed to victory lane.

On the third try, the IMCA Stock Car feature got rolling with Bill Reetz and Dave Plowman out front. Tim Bengard powered to the front, claiming the lead just two laps into the race after starting eighth. One lap later Clay Christian moved up to second and soon pulled along the low side of Bengard. Christian inched ahead of Bengard at ten to go, but Bengard quickly snatched the position back. Down the backstretch at eight to go, Keith Knop snuck into fourth and pushed up to third by the end of the lap. Trent Partridge took on Reetz for the fourth spot and secured the position with four laps remaining in the race. At the two to go marker Knop continued forward into second, just before Partridge began falling back. Christian held on in third and Reetz fourth as Bengard received the checkers for the win.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature took off with Charlie Bird and Mike Harris out front, ahead of a four-wide competition for third. Kenny Hansen pulled through with the third spot and quickly proceeded to second. Two laps into the race, Hansen became the new leader and Harris followed into second. Down the front stretch, Jason Nielsen shot by Harris as Donovan Smith climbed up to fourth after starting the race in twelfth. A caution came out on the next lap, and Hansen pulled in to pit row, leaving the lead to Nielsen. Once the race resumed, Smith picked his way to the front position. One lap later, at eight to go, Tanner Powers jumped up to second with Trent Murphy in third and Mike Harris fourth. The top four remained in their place to the finish as Smith sailed to the victory.

Daniel Mefferd led the Hornets into turn one of their feature event with Andrew Hicks right behind. Springing forward through the pack was Willy Muhr, who stole second from Hicks in turn one after the drop of the green. By the backstretch, Bayley Nicholl had fourth, and Muhr took hold of the lead down the front. Mefferd held strong, trading the lead several times with Muhr. With three laps to go Muhr secured the first position. Coming off of turn two of the white flag lap, Corey Madden swept by Hicks to pick up third before Muhr crossed the finish line to collect another win.

Next Saturday gates open at 5:00 pm, with hot laps at 6:30 pm, and racing immediately following.
