Ryan Scores First Late Model Win at Davenport
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (May 11, 2007) - It was eight years in the making, but Matt Ryan of Davenport, finally picked up his first IMCA late model feature win at the Davenport Speedway, Friday night.

After a couple attempts to start the 25-lap late model feature, Mike Cothron took the early race lead. On one of several restarts, Cothron would get shuffled back and Adam Oppendike would take the lead. As Oppendike worked his way up the track looking for grip, Ryan would start reeling in the leader.

On lap 18, the bottom grove paid off for Ryan as he took over the lead. Oppendike would stay close, but could not stop Ryan from taking his first checkers as a late model driver.

Oppendike would have to settle for second, with Ray Guss Jr. third, Bob Toland fourth and Andy Nezworski fifth.

Terry Neal, Joe Zrostlik, and Rob Toland won the late model heats. Stephan Kammerer won the consi.

Jim Willert proved that being up front is everything in the V-8 Modified feature. Willert started on the pole position for the race and led the entire distance, for the win.

Milo Veloz Jr. was able to put pressure on Willert several times, but couldn't make a pass for the lead. Chuck Hanna finished third, with Thad Wilson fourth, and Ryan Dolan fifth. Veloz, Kevin Blum, and Ray Cox Jr. took heat race wins. Dolan won the Modified consi.

Scott Pratt, in the #28 car, took home the checkers in the street stock feature. Once in the lead Pratt was able to hold off Joe Beal and the remainder of the field for the win. Beal would follow the leader all the way to the checkers for second. Andrew Burk had a strong run for third with Rob Henry fourth. Henry and Denny Dillon took the heat race wins.

Todd Stickler was on a mission in the B-Mod main. Stickler started in the fifth row and was third by lap two. Stickler put an inside move on early race leader Dustin Begyn on lap 4 and cruised on for the win. Jeremy Marquette also moved up nicely through the field for second with Begyn holding on for third. Jake Waterman and Nick Hixson fourth and fifth respectively. Hixson, Stickler, and Doug Burkhead were heat winners. Kevin Dickey won the semi.

Warren Ropp wasted little time getting to the front of the INEX Legend car feature. Once in the lead, Ropp put half a lap between himself and the rest of the field when he reached the checkers. Second through seventh was a tightly packed bunch, with Matt Montieth taking second and Brandon Hentges finishing third. Ropp also won the heat.

Steven Phillips jumped out to an early race lead in the 4 Cylinder Stocks feature. By the midway point, Bryan Klein dove under Phillips in turn one and stole the lead away, en route to his second straight 4-Cylinder win. Rick Kay was second again, with Phillips third.

The next race at the Davenport Speedway will be Friday, May 18th.
