Phillips, Meyer and Ahlers Score Wins Before Davenport Rain
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (May 25) - Intermittent rain finally won out Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Twice, brief showers interrupted the racing action and the track was re-packed. With only three races remaining in the program, the skies opened again, washing out the Street Stock, V-8 Modified and IMCA Late Model features. Two of those races will be made up next week and one the following Friday.

John Ahlers raced to the win in the action-packed, caution-shortened B-Mod main. Ahlers worked his way to the front and was being challenged by Todd Stickler and Brad Pershy when the race was finally stopped, for a flip by Kevin Spriet, coming out of turn four. Spriet escaped the wreckage without serious injury. Ahlers was credited with the win, his second of the year at Davenport. Stickler was second, with Pershy third, Jake Waterman fourth and Dustin Begyn fifth. Pershy, Stickler, and Kevin Fitzgibbon were heat winners.

Keith Meyer of Cedar Rapids won the INEX Legend car feature. The victory was Meyer's first win at Davenport. Craig Peekenschnieder took a hard fought second place with Dennis Begyn third and Warren Ropp fouth. Keith Meyer's son Jeremy recorded a fifth place finish. Dennis Begyn won the heat.

Steven Phillips jumped out to an early race lead in the 4 Cylinder Stocks feature, but allowed Ricky Kay to grab the lead on lap four. Phillips regained the lead and never looked back as he drove to his first feature win of the season. Kay held on for second with Jim McKinney third. Steve Boyle and Josh Hazen rounded out the top five. Phillips also won the heat.

The other classes saw Mark Preston, Rick Wages, and Terry Neal win the late model heats. In V-8 Modifieds, Kevin Blum, Thad Wilson, and Milo Veloz Jr., each won a heat race. Street Stock heat wins went to Tim Koehler and Henry Carson.
